Then verify the exact card list, current legality, condition, authenticity, and total delivered price. Rules and product contents vary by game, format, region, and product generation, so a deck that is complete or legal in one setting may not suit another.
Start with how you plan to use the deck
Your intended use determines which checks matter most. A beginner looking for a first game-night deck needs to know whether it can be played out of the box and whether the rules are approachable. Someone buying for a tournament needs the precise list and current event legality. A collector may care more about printing, language, packaging, and card condition than immediate playability.

- Learning casually: Look for a product the publisher describes as ready to play, and check whether it includes a rules guide or other promised materials.
- Upgrading: Identify the existing deck or strategy it is meant to improve and confirm which cards are included.
- Tournament play: Get the complete list and verify it against the current rules for the exact game, format, event, region, and language.
- Collecting: Confirm the printing, language, condition, and whether the product is sealed or has been opened.
Ask yourself what a successful purchase looks like before comparing listings. Is the goal simply to have cards to play together, to learn with a product designed for beginners, to add specific cards to a collection, or to bring a legal list to an event? These are different purchases even if a seller uses the same broad word, “deck.” Deciding first helps you avoid paying for extras you do not need or buying an attractive product that does not meet your actual purpose.
Do not assume that a preconstructed product in one game works like one in another. Pokémon Support describes preconstructed Pokémon decks as products intended to be playable right out of the box, but that is a Pokémon-specific description, not a general rule for all CCGs (Pokémon product types). For any other game, look for that publisher’s own description of the product and its contents.

If you are new to a game, ask whether the product is intended for a new player and whether it comes with instructions or a rules guide. A custom deck might be complete as a list of cards but still assume that its owner already understands how those cards work together. Konami provides official rulebook resources for Yu-Gi-Oh! players who want to learn how to use their cards correctly; do not assume that every deck listing includes that guidance (Yu-Gi-Oh! rulebooks).
Confirm exactly what the listing includes
Ask for the game and product name, a complete card list, and the quantity of every card. Establish whether you are buying a factory-sealed product, a preconstructed deck, or a custom or used list. A product name alone is not enough if the offer is a modified deck or if the seller’s listing does not make clear which version is being sold.
- Check that the stated list and card quantities match the offer.
- Ask whether any cards are missing, substituted, or added by the seller.
- Confirm extras such as tokens, rules inserts, or accessories only when the listing promises them.
- For sealed products, distinguish an unopened factory-sealed item from a deck assembled from individual cards.
For a used or custom deck, request the list in a form you can check card by card. The list should make clear both which cards are present and how many copies of each are included. If the seller gives only a general description such as a deck name or strategy, ask whether the cards match the original product or whether the list has been changed. A modified deck is not necessarily a problem, but you need to know what you are paying for and whether the changes affect playability or event legality.

Product contents can be specific to a game and generation. Pokémon Support says same-name preconstructed Pokémon decks have fixed 60-card contents, while booster packs contain random cards; some Pokémon Elite Trainer Boxes include sleeves, dice, counters, and dividers. Those details apply to the Pokémon products described by the publisher and should not be assumed for other games or product lines (Pokémon product types). Even within one game, check the product’s own description rather than assuming that every box with a familiar name has identical extras.
Clarify what “complete” means for the specific listing. It may refer to the card list only, or it may also refer to accessories or printed materials the seller advertises. Avoid treating unpromised extras as a given. If something matters to you—such as a rules insert for a new player or accessories shown in the listing—ask directly whether it is included and whether it is original to the product or added by the seller.
Check legality for the exact game and event
If you intend to play in an organized event, verify legality immediately before purchasing. Check the publisher’s current rules and restricted-card lists for the format and region where you will play. A deck may be legal for casual play but not for a particular tournament, and rules for one CCG cannot be transferred to another.

Before checking individual cards, define the setting: which game, which format, which event, which territory, and which language will you use? Then compare the actual card list with the publisher’s rules and lists that are current for that setting. A seller’s statement that a deck is “tournament ready” is not a substitute for this check, especially if the listing is older or does not name the format. Rules and lists can change, so a listing that was accurate when posted may not reflect the rules in force when you buy or play.
Pokémon TCG
Pokémon Standard legality rotates based on regulation marks. Some older cards can remain legal if they have been reprinted with a current regulation mark. Check the current official format documents and the marks on the actual cards rather than relying only on a deck’s age or seller description (Play! Pokémon rules and resources). In other words, the printing in the deck matters: do not assume an older card is automatically out of rotation, or that a familiar card name is enough to establish legality. Verify the applicable current mark and official guidance.
Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG
Legality can depend on a card’s release date, region, permitted language, and the current Forbidden & Limited List. The official page referenced here covers the European Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG; verify the rules and list applicable to your own region instead of assuming regional details are identical (Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Forbidden & Limited List). This means a list needs more than a quick check of its card names: confirm that the relevant cards meet the release and regional requirements, are in a permitted language for your intended play, and comply with the current list. Konami also provides official rulebook resources for players who need to learn how cards are used (Yu-Gi-Oh! rulebooks).
Gundam Card Game
The Gundam Card Game rules allow up to four copies of a card number, subject to the current banned and restricted list. The official rules page notes that the list may change, so check its current version before buying for an event (Gundam Card Game rules). Do not apply this copy limit to another game or assume that a deck that met the rule previously still does; consult the current list for the event you plan to attend.
Inspect condition and packaging
For used or opened cards, request clear photographs of both the front and back, plus a complete list. Ask the seller to describe wear, bends, creases, water damage, or marked backs in writing. Agree on what condition terms mean for this purchase rather than relying on a label alone: the official sources cited here do not establish a universal grading standard for every CCG or marketplace.

If a photograph does not let you see the details you need, request another one or decide that you cannot assess the offer well enough. A written description is useful alongside the photos because it records whether the seller has disclosed damage or other wear. Be precise about the issue you want clarified; for example, ask whether any cards have creases, bends, water damage, or marked backs rather than relying on a broad condition label.

For a sealed product, inspect the seals and read the full listing, including auction fine print. Wizards of the Coast advises buying from a reputable dealer and checking seals and auction details. Its authenticity guidance also warns against proxy copies represented as original cards; authorized-online-retailer wording in that guidance is scoped to North America (Wizards of the Coast authenticity guidance). Read what the seller says the product is, what is pictured, and what the sale includes; do not treat an auction headline as the entire description.
Do not assign a formal grade or assume that a phrase such as “near mint” has a universal meaning based on the sources available here. If a condition label is important to your decision, ask the seller how they are using it and inspect the cards against the specific evidence they provide. The goal is to agree on what you are buying, not to infer a universal condition scale that the evidence does not establish.
Reduce the risk of counterfeit cards
Prefer reputable sellers, compare the packaging with official product images, and be cautious if a sealed product is offered at an implausibly low price. Pokémon Support specifically identifies a price dramatically below suggested retail for Pokémon packs as a counterfeit warning; it is not a universal pricing formula for decks from every game.
Pokémon Support says a counterfeit card may be easier to see through when held up to bright light and recommends consulting a shop specializing in trading cards if authenticity remains uncertain. Treat these as screening steps, not guarantees: a single visual check cannot establish authenticity in every case (Pokémon counterfeit-card guidance). If you have doubts, an experienced specialist shop can give you another point of evaluation rather than leaving you to rely on a seller’s assurance alone.
Publisher guidance also points to different checks for different products. Wizards recommends buying from a reputable dealer, checking seals and auction fine print, and watching for proxies represented as original cards. Pokémon recommends comparing packaging with familiar official product images and gives the bright-light test as one possible way to spot a counterfeit. These are useful precautions, but none is presented as an absolute guarantee. Consider the seller, listing detail, packaging, and card evidence together.
Keep the scope of any warning in mind. A price far below suggested retail is identified by Pokémon as a warning sign for Pokémon packs; it does not prove that every inexpensive deck is counterfeit or provide a general market price rule. Similarly, a visual check may raise concern but should not be treated as proof either way. When the product’s authenticity is uncertain, pause the purchase and seek a qualified shop’s opinion.

Compare price with equivalent offers
Compare the asking price with current sold listings for the same card list, language, printing or edition, and condition. Include shipping and fees in the delivered total. Two listings are not true price comparisons if one contains a different deck list, a different printing, or cards in substantially different condition.
Start with the exact item rather than the broad game or product name. If the deck is custom or used, compare it with sales of the same list or with the same cards in comparable versions, languages, printings, and conditions. If the seller has not supplied enough detail to establish those characteristics, you do not yet have a sound basis for judging whether the price is good value. Ask for the missing information before treating another listing as a match.
Include shipping and fees to compare what you would actually pay, not just the displayed price. A lower headline price may not be the lower delivered cost once those charges are included. Also avoid comparing a sealed product with an assembled deck as if they were equivalent: they differ in what is being offered, and the relevant comparison should match the item you want to buy.
No particular deck or seller listing is specified here, and there is no universal valuation method or current market price that applies to all CCG decks. Judge value against genuinely comparable offers, not a broad estimate for a game or product name. No specific discount or price threshold can be recommended without a named product and comparable current sales.

Sleeves and storage can help protect and organize cards, but check the game’s card dimensions, the quantity you need, and local event rules before buying. Do not assume accessories are included unless the listing says so. Some Pokémon Elite Trainer Boxes include sleeves and other accessories, but contents vary by product and generation (Pokémon product types).

Use the same checklist for competing listings
When choosing between two offers, compare them on the same terms rather than being swayed by a low headline price or familiar product name. The strongest comparison is between listings that match in the features that affect your use: list, condition, version, and intended play setting.
| What to compare | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Contents | Complete card list, quantities, substitutions, and any promised extras |
| Play purpose | Ready-to-play, upgrade, custom list, or collectible item |
| Legality | Same game, format, event, region, language, and current rules |
| Condition | Card and packaging condition, supported by photos and a written description |
| Authenticity | Seller confidence, packaging, seals, and whether the cards are represented as originals |
| Total price | Comparable list, printing, language, and condition, including shipping and fees |
| Included guidance or accessories | Rules materials and accessories explicitly promised or included in the product |
For a new player, also check whether the publisher presents the product as playable out of the box and whether it includes a rules guide. For tournament use, make the legality check against the rules in force for the event rather than relying on an older listing or a seller’s assurance. For a collector, check the version, language, packaging, and condition, and make sure the price comparison uses equivalent versions. In every case, if a key detail is missing, request it before deciding that two offers are comparable.
A practical order for checking a listing
- Set your purpose. Decide whether you want to learn, play casually, upgrade, collect, or attend a named event.
- Identify the item. Confirm the game, exact product or deck name, and whether it is sealed, preconstructed, custom, or used.
- Get the contents. Ask for the complete list and quantities, plus clarification about substitutions, missing cards, and promised extras.
- Verify suitability and legality. For a new player, check publisher guidance and available rules materials. For event play, check the current rules for the relevant game, format, region, language, and event.
- Assess condition and authenticity. Review clear front-and-back photos and the written description for used cards; inspect seals and listing fine print for sealed product; evaluate seller confidence and packaging.
- Compare delivered value. Use current sold listings for equivalent lists and versions, and include fees and shipping.
- Check extras last. Confirm accessories or other materials only if you need them and the listing says they are included.
This order helps prevent a common mistake: spending time comparing prices before establishing whether the listings contain the same thing. First identify a suitable, sufficiently described deck; then compare its condition, authenticity, and total cost with genuinely similar offers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I look for when buying cards for us to play together?
Start by deciding whether you need a product that is playable out of the box or a custom list that assumes some familiarity with the game. Check the exact contents, any rules materials the listing promises, and whether the publisher identifies the product as ready to play. Pokémon describes its preconstructed decks as intended to be playable right out of the box, but that should not be assumed for products from other games.
How can I tell whether a deck listing is complete?
Ask for the exact game and product name, a complete card list, and the quantity of each card. Confirm whether the deck is sealed, preconstructed, custom, or used, and ask about missing cards, substitutions, and added cards. Count accessories or printed materials only when the listing promises them.
How do I know if a deck is legal for a tournament?
First identify the game, format, event, territory, and language you plan to use. Then check the publisher’s current rules and restricted-card lists against the actual card list and cards. Rules differ across games and can change, so do not rely only on an older listing or seller assurance.
Can a visual check prove that a card is authentic?
No single check is a guarantee. Pokémon Support says holding a card up to bright light may help identify a counterfeit and recommends consulting a trading-card specialist shop if uncertain. Also consider the seller, product packaging, seals, and listing details; Wizards warns about proxies represented as original cards.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow should I compare two deck prices?
Compare current sold listings for the same card list, language, printing or edition, and condition, and include shipping and fees. A sealed product and a custom or used deck are not automatically equivalent. There is no universal valuation method or price threshold for all CCG decks.
The Bottom Line
Buy only after you know exactly what the listing contains and whether it fits your use. For play, check current game- and event-specific legality; for any purchase, inspect condition, consider authenticity, and compare the delivered price with genuinely similar offers. Product rules and contents are game-specific, so verify them with the relevant publisher rather than relying on assumptions.
