ARC Raiders matchmaking uses Raiders’ playstyles across previous rounds to make similar encounters more likely, while also considering squad size and practical constraints such as queue time and latency. It is a gradual, probabilistic tendency—not a promise of friendly, aggressive, or PvE-only lobbies.
How ARC Raiders matchmaking works
Embark says matchmaking balances fairness and enjoyment. Fairness includes matching players with a similar chance of success and prioritizing equal-sized squads where possible. For enjoyment, the studio says matching by playstyle can reduce friction between Raiders.
Playstyle is not a simple friendly-or-aggressive switch. Embark describes a continuous range, from players who are almost always cooperative to those who engage heavily in PvP, with many styles between. The system uses past playstyle—especially interactions with other Raiders—to make it more likely that players encounter others with similar tendencies. Its explanation does not disclose a precise formula, numerical weights, thresholds, or a published matchmaking statistic.
As Embark puts it, “Similarity is more likely, not guaranteed.” Very different playstyles are less likely to meet, not impossible to meet. If you change how you play, the kinds of Raiders you tend to encounter can shift gradually; the system is not meant to overreact to a single moment.

What affects your matchmaking profile
Playstyle across previous rounds
How you engage with other Raiders is one of the strongest stated inputs. The system looks for patterns over time, so one shot or kill does not instantly place you in a PvP-focused lobby. Embark has also changed how it interprets encounters: defending yourself is treated differently from starting a fight, after the earlier approach could classify cautious players as more PvP-focused than they were.
Squad size and each teammate
Embark says it prioritizes equal squad sizes where possible. A squad’s profile is not based only on its leader: each member influences it, and the leader receives no special weight over teammates.

Low-activity rounds
Rounds with little Topside interaction carry less weight in playstyle history under Embark’s described update. The studio gives spawning and surrendering as examples.
What does not affect matchmaking
- Loadout or kit cost: Embark says the system is not driven by your kit and does not scale lobby difficulty according to loadout cost.
- Post-round survey answers: Feedback may inform design trends, but Embark says it does not control your next lobby.
- Looting a knocked-out player: Embark says looting does not affect matchmaking.
- One isolated action: A single shot or kill does not immediately change your matchmaking category; the system looks at behavior patterns over time.
Does crossplay change the kind of lobby you get?
Crossplay changes who can be included in the matchmaking pool and can affect queue time. It does not guarantee a more cooperative or more aggressive encounter. If crossplay is off for one member of a party, Embark Support says the most restrictive setting applies to the party, so the group queues with crossplay off.

Why you cannot guarantee a friendly or PvE-only round
Playstyle matching adjusts probabilities; it does not assign a guaranteed lobby label or prevent other Raiders from attacking. Even if your recent encounters have been friendly—or hostile—that alone does not prove you are locked into a category. Keep treating other Raiders as uncertain encounters rather than assuming matchmaking has made the run safe.

If matchmaking is slow
- Check whether crossplay is off. Embark Support identifies this as a common reason for slow matchmaking.
- If you are in a party, check every member’s crossplay setting. The most restrictive member’s setting applies to the group.
- Check your matchmaking region and set Gameplay > Server to Automatic on PC or console, as Embark Support advises.
If standard maps work but map conditions do not appear
Embark Support recommends syncing your device clock for players who can join standard maps but cannot find matches with map conditions. This is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a universal fix for every queue problem.
