ARC Raiders PvE vs PvP: What Changes and Which Should You Play?

ARC Raiders’ October 13–20, 2026 PvE toggle removes player damage but lowers loot, mixes solo/duo/trio players and excludes four conditions. Here is how it compares with classic PvPvE and which experience fits your goals.

Choose the PvE toggle during the October 13–20, 2026 test if you want to concentrate on quests, scavenging and exploration without hostile-player damage. Choose classic PvPvE if the uncertainty of meeting, avoiding, negotiating with or fighting other Raiders is the reason you play ARC Raiders. The test makes PvE safer, but it also lowers overall loot value, mixes solo players with duos and trios, removes several high-tension conditions and does not affect your PvPvE matchmaking rating.

That distinction matters because ARC Raiders normally is not a separate “PvP game” and “PvE game.” It is an extraction adventure where ARC machines and other survivors share the same threat model. The limited toggle changes how much player conflict can enter a raid; it does not create a separate progression system or a different game.

What ARC Raiders is actually comparing

ARC Raiders is an extraction adventure set on a lethal future Earth. You leave an underground settlement, search the surface for resources, craft and repair equipment, then try to extract with what you found. The official game description and Steam listing present solo play and parties of up to three, with ARC machines and other survivors as opposing forces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes “PvE versus PvP” slightly imprecise shorthand. The regular mode is PvPvE: player-versus-player encounters happen inside a player-versus-environment raid. ARC machines can threaten everyone, while Raiders may cooperate, avoid one another or attack. The October test adds a PvE-focused matchmaking choice in which the player-versus-player damage layer is removed for that session.

The test is scheduled for October 13–20, 2026. Embark has not stated the exact ending hour or time zone in the announcement, so availability should be checked in the game during that week rather than assumed to continue through the entire final calendar day.

ARC Raiders is listed for Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and GeForce NOW. Platform availability does not change the rules of the two matchmaking experiences.

PvE toggle test versus classic PvPvE

Decision point PvE toggle test Classic PvPvE
Player damage Zero player-to-player damage during the PvE session Other Raiders can attack, and player encounters remain part of the extraction risk
Primary pressure ARC machines, navigation, resources and cooperation with other Raiders ARC machines plus uncertain encounters with other Raiders
Party sizes in a session Solo, duo and trio players can be mixed together Regular matchmaking tries to account for squad size where possible
Loot economy during the test Overall loot value is lowered to reflect the relative safety Slightly higher baseline loot values during the test
Matchmaking rating Does not affect PvPvE matchmaking rating Regular play contributes to the evolving playstyle estimate
Conditions Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate and Frigate are excluded The standard condition pool remains the relevant experience
Availability Limited test announced for October 13–20, 2026; the toggle is scheduled for removal afterward Standard ARC Raiders experience

The table describes the announced test, not a permanent feature set. Embark says it will review feedback and data before deciding what happens next.

The central distinction is risk from other players, not risk in general. “Zero player-to-player damage” does not mean a raid is harmless: ARC machines remain dangerous, and movement, navigation and extraction still matter. Nor does the announcement describe a separate loot track, new character progression or a reduced-difficulty version of the game. You are choosing a different social and combat condition for the raid, within the same overall extraction adventure.

How regular playstyle matchmaking works

Embark describes matchmaking as a balance between fair, enjoyable encounters and practical constraints such as queue time and latency. One important input is your playstyle across previous rounds, especially how you interact with other Raiders. The estimate is a continuum, not a permanent label that puts an account into a “friendly” or “aggressive” category.

Similar behavior is more likely, not guaranteed

A player who repeatedly seeks fights may become more likely to meet players with similar tendencies, while a player who usually avoids conflict may see more cautious players. The system changes probabilities gradually as it observes patterns. It cannot promise that every teammate or nearby squad is peaceful, and it does not create PvE-only lobbies in the regular mode.

Embark’s matchmaking notes state explicitly that there are no “PvE-only” lobbies or servers where other Raiders can never attack you. If you enter classic PvPvE, treat every encounter as uncertain even when your recent matches have been quiet. A friendly-seeming opening does not alter the rules of the session, and the system does not guarantee that a player with a similar history will behave identically in every encounter.

Defending yourself is not the same as starting fights

The May 20, 2026 matchmaking explanation distinguishes defending yourself from initiating an attack. It also says low-activity rounds carry less weight in the playstyle history. That means one defensive shot should not be treated as an instant switch into an aggressive matchmaking category. The estimate responds to behavior over time, and the official explanation does not publish a simple threshold or score that players can calculate.

Matchmaking also has to work within practical limits. Embark says it considers several factors, including matchmaking time and latency, and tries to account for squad size where possible. Those constraints are another reason to read playstyle matching as an influence on the likely lobby mix, not a custom guarantee about who you will meet on a particular run.

What the October PvE test changes

Player combat is removed from the session

The defining rule is zero player-to-player damage. Your attention can stay on ARC machines, objectives, resources and movement without another Raider being able to kill you directly. The test is designed for players who want to scavenge, complete quests and explore in relative safety from hostile players, not for players seeking a new combat-difficulty setting.

That is a specific protection: the test announcement does not say other Raiders disappear from the world. Instead, it frames the mode as co-op gameplay with other Raiders against the ARC threat. If you enjoy the presence of other players but not the possibility that an encounter ends in player damage, this is the version aimed at that preference.

Solo, duo and trio players share matchmaking

PvE sessions combine solo, duo and trio players. A solo player can therefore enter a session that also contains larger parties, and a trio should not assume every other group has the same number of members. Because player damage is disabled, the mixed group sizes change the social and cooperative feel rather than creating the usual squad-versus-squad combat imbalance.

If you are choosing PvE specifically because you expect a private solo session or a lobby limited to your party size, the announced rules do not promise either. Think of it as shared cooperative matchmaking with mixed party sizes, not a solo-only queue. Whether you queue alone or with a group, ARC remains the threat the announcement says players will face together.

Four named conditions are excluded

Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate and Frigate are not included in the test. Embark says these conditions rely on uncertainty and higher tension, which conflicts with the safer cooperative purpose of the toggle. If one of those conditions is the reason you enjoy a particular raid, classic PvPvE is the available way to seek it during the test.

Safety changes the reward balance

Embark is lowering overall loot value in PvE to compensate for the reduced danger from other players. During the test, PvPvE receives slightly higher baseline loot values. No universal percentage or item-by-item adjustment is provided, so the announcement should not be read as a promise of a fixed payout difference in every raid.

This trade-off is deliberate: PvE lets you pursue objectives with less risk of an ambush, while PvPvE asks you to accept greater extraction danger in exchange for the game’s higher-tension loop and somewhat stronger baseline loot values during the test. The developer describes a change to overall value; it does not specify which individual items change, how much a particular haul is worth, or guarantee that any one PvPvE run will outperform any one PvE run.

ARC can reacquire a moving downed player

If ARC downs you in PvE, crawling can cause the machine to reacquire you as a target. Embark says ARC will ignore a downed Raider who stays still. The rule applies to the machine threat; it does not turn a downed state into a guaranteed recovery, and it does not imply that every rescue attempt will be safe.

The toggle is isolated from PvPvE rating

PvE sessions do not affect PvPvE matchmaking rating. You can use the test to learn routes, work through quests or play cooperatively without changing the playstyle estimate used for regular PvPvE matchmaking. Switching between the experiences is the intended use of the toggle, but the separation applies only to rating; it does not make the limited option permanent.

The announcement presents switching as a choice between the classic experience and the test PvE experience. It does not give a detailed menu path or promise any specific account, inventory or progression effects beyond the stated rating separation, so those should not be inferred from the toggle alone.

It is a trial, not a release promise

Executive Producer Aleks described the test as an option between the classic PvPvE experience and a cooperative PvE experience against ARC. The same announcement cautions: “This test is not a promise that there will be a PvE mode in the future, but take this as an indication that we are seriously considering it.” The toggle is scheduled to be removed when the test ends, with later decisions dependent on the feedback and data Embark reviews.

In the September 24, 2026 announcement, Aleks said the test would run October 13–20 and let players choose between classic PvPvE and PvE focused on co-op against ARC. That wording describes a limited test window, not an ongoing mode launch date. Since the announcement does not give an ending hour or time zone, the safest plan is to use the in-game availability during the stated dates and not rely on a precise local cutoff.

How to choose the right experience

Choose the PvE toggle when your goal is progress without ambushes

  • You want to finish quests or gather materials while concentrating on ARC behavior rather than watching for hostile players.
  • You are learning routes, extraction habits or resource locations and prefer a lower social-combat penalty for mistakes.
  • You want cooperative interaction with other Raiders but do not want a friendly gesture to become a lethal fight.
  • You are comfortable with mixed solo, duo and trio sessions and lower overall loot value.
  • You want to experiment without changing your PvPvE matchmaking rating.

PvE is especially suitable for a focused objective run: decide what quest or resource matters, accept that the session may contain differently sized groups, and treat ARC as the source of meaningful danger. If you are downed by ARC, remember the test’s specific behavior and avoid crawling unless movement is necessary.

It can also make sense when your priority is the activity itself rather than the uncertainty around other people: for example, a session devoted to exploring or completing a quest without being interrupted by player damage. That does not remove the need to weigh ARC threats or extraction risk, and the lowered overall loot value is part of the bargain. If maximizing baseline loot or accessing every listed condition matters more, the test’s safer rules may not suit that session.

Choose classic PvPvE when uncertainty is the attraction

  • You enjoy deciding whether another Raider is a potential ally, a rival or a threat.
  • You want the complete extraction tension in which information, positioning and trust matter alongside machine combat.
  • You value the slightly higher baseline loot values available in PvPvE during the test.
  • You want access to Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate or Frigate.
  • You accept that playstyle matchmaking can influence the odds but cannot guarantee a peaceful lobby.

Classic PvPvE is the better choice if the possibility of a player encounter is part of the story you want each raid to tell. A quiet match does not change the rules: another Raider may still attack, and a player who usually avoids fights can still meet an aggressive squad.

Choose it, too, if you want the regular ARC Raiders loop without the test’s condition exclusions or lower PvE loot values. Do not mistake the slightly higher baseline loot value for a guarantee of better results in an individual raid: player encounters add risk, and the official comparison does not publish fixed per-run payouts.

Use both if your priorities change by session

The toggle is intended to let players switch between the two experiences. A practical schedule is to use PvE for quest or exploration sessions and PvPvE when you specifically want the full extraction contest. Because PvE is isolated from PvPvE rating, this rotation does not require you to protect a single matchmaking profile by avoiding the test.

There is no need to treat the choice as a permanent identity or a declaration that you are always friendly or always aggressive. The test allows a player to pick a session type according to the goal for that run. The rating separation makes that especially clear: opting into test PvE does not count toward the PvPvE matchmaking estimate, while regular playstyle matching responds gradually to patterns in PvPvE rounds.

What “PvE” does not mean here

The test does not remove all danger, make every objective easier or guarantee extraction. ARC machines remain active threats, and the downed-player behavior shows that machine combat still has consequences. The test also does not introduce a separate progression track, announce a new difficulty tier or provide every condition in the regular pool.

Likewise, classic PvPvE is not pure player-versus-player combat. ARC remains a major part of the raid, and player encounters happen inside the same scavenging, crafting, repair and extraction loop. The meaningful choice is how much uncertainty from other Raiders you want layered onto the machine threat.

Embark’s player-preference figures, with the necessary context

In its September 24, 2026 announcement, Embark reported that its player-preference breakdown was 37% Friendly co-op players, 27% Mixed players and 34% Pure PvP players. The announcement also said 51% of the surveyed player base expressed interest in a dedicated PvE option.

Those numbers are developer-reported figures. The announcement reviewed does not provide the survey’s sample size or methodology, so they should be read as Embark’s reported results rather than an independently verified estimate of every ARC Raiders player. They help explain why the test exists, but they do not predict whether a permanent mode will be approved.

Questions the test announcement leaves open

Is PvE permanent?

No permanent mode is promised. The announced toggle is limited to October 13–20, 2026, and is scheduled for removal afterward. Any continuation would require a later official update.

Will all maps and conditions be available?

No. Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate and Frigate are specifically excluded from the PvE test because Embark associates them with uncertainty and higher tension.

Can PvE change my PvPvE matchmaking rating?

No. The announcement says PvE sessions do not affect PvPvE matchmaking rating. Regular PvPvE behavior remains the activity relevant to that matchmaking estimate.

Does normal matchmaking provide a safe lobby?

No. Playstyle matching makes similar encounters more likely over time, but Embark expressly says it does not provide lobbies where other Raiders can never attack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When exactly does the test end?

The published window is October 13–20, 2026, but the announcement does not specify an ending hour or time zone. Do not assume the toggle remains available until midnight in your region.

Bottom line: which should you play?

During the limited test, select PvE for quests, scavenging, exploration and cooperative ARC fights when avoiding player damage matters more than maximizing loot or experiencing every high-tension condition. Select classic PvPvE for the defining ARC Raiders extraction gamble: machines, uncertain survivors, possible cooperation and possible conflict in the same raid.

The safest interpretation of the current announcement is also the most practical one: PvE is a temporary experiment with lower overall loot value and isolated rating, while PvPvE remains the standard experience. Use the test to see which risk-and-reward balance suits you, but treat any permanent PvE future as undecided until Embark publishes a further update.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch between PvE and PvPvE during the October test?

Yes. Embark describes the toggle as a way to choose between the test PvE experience and classic PvPvE. The announcement does not provide a detailed menu path, so check the in-game matchmaking options during the October 13–20, 2026 window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does PvE mean I will be alone or only matched with players in my party?

No such private-session promise is stated. PvE sessions mix solo, duo and trio players, with co-op against ARC as the focus. Player-to-player damage is disabled, but the session is not described as solo-only.

Can other Raiders still hurt me in the PvE test?

The defining test rule is zero player-to-player damage. That removes damage from other Raiders, but ARC machines remain dangerous and can down you.

What happens if ARC downs me while I am crawling in PvE?

Embark says crawling can cause ARC to reacquire you as a target. It says ARC will ignore a downed Raider who stays still; that does not guarantee rescue or extraction.

Will PvE have the same loot as classic PvPvE?

No. Embark says overall loot value is lowered in PvE to account for relative safety, while PvPvE has slightly higher baseline loot values during the test. No percentage or item-by-item adjustment is specified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate and Frigate unavailable in PvE?

Embark says those conditions depend on uncertainty and higher tension, which does not fit the test’s safer cooperative focus.

Does my behavior in PvE change regular matchmaking?

PvE sessions do not affect PvPvE matchmaking rating. In regular PvPvE, playstyle estimates respond gradually to patterns across rounds; Embark also says defending yourself is treated differently from starting a fight and low-activity rounds carry less weight.

Is regular ARC Raiders matchmaking a way to get a friendly-only lobby?

No. Playstyle matchmaking can make similar tendencies more likely, but Embark says regular matchmaking does not provide PvE-only lobbies where other Raiders can never attack.

Is the PvE toggle becoming a permanent mode?

Embark has not promised that. The October 13–20, 2026 toggle is a limited test that is scheduled to be removed afterward; the studio says it will review feedback and data before deciding what comes next.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What time does the PvE test end on October 20?

The announcement gives October 13–20, 2026, but does not specify the ending hour or time zone. Check the in-game availability rather than assuming a local midnight cutoff.
