It is making a fast, repeatable decision: identify what you know, move to cover that gives you another option, check whether your loadout and escape route support a fight, then engage only when the risk makes sense for the loot you carry. If those conditions disappear, break line of sight and extract.
What PvP means in ARC Raiders
ARC Raiders is a multiplayer extraction adventure in which danger comes from both ARC machines and other Raiders. You enter with equipment, search for valuable loot, and try to leave alive with it. A successful run is therefore not measured only by eliminations. A fight that wins a few items but leaves you exposed to a second squad, an ARC patrol, or an unsafe extraction can be a poor trade.

Use that extraction premise to set your objective before every encounter. You may be trying to complete a task, collect a particular resource, reach an extraction point, or simply preserve an expensive loadout. The correct PvP decision changes with that objective. A player carrying nothing and a player carrying a nearly complete haul should not accept the same level of risk.

- Notice. Record the cue: a footstep, gunshot, visual movement, opened door, defeated ARC, or teammate callout. Treat a sound as a clue, not proof of an exact location.
- Prepare. Move off the most obvious line of sight and identify your current cover, a second piece of cover, and a route that can break contact.
- Decide. Ask whether you know enough to fight, whether your weapon and supplies suit the distance, and whether the possible reward justifies exposing your current loot.
- Act. Engage from a position that lets you answer the opponent’s next move. If the answers are poor, hold fire, rotate, or leave.
This loop is more reliable than a rule such as “always shoot first.” Embark combat designer SprinkleMountain described the intended combat rhythm as moments in which players read and answer one another’s actions. Your positioning should create time for that exchange instead of forcing you into an uncontrolled trade.
How to choose useful cover
Cover is a decision point, not a safe zone
Good cover interrupts a sightline long enough for you to choose what happens next. It should let you peek, heal, reload, change direction, or disengage without crossing a large open area. A single rock, wall, vehicle, or terrain fold may stop one attack, but it does not make you permanently safe. Another Raider can move around it, and ARC machines can pressure the same space.
When approaching a likely fight, prefer a position with two related advantages:
- A first object or terrain feature that blocks the current line of sight.
- A second usable position that you can reach without exposing yourself for the entire move.
- An exit route toward deeper cover, a different angle, or an extraction path.
- Enough room to avoid being trapped against a wall, cliff, doorway, or machine patrol.
If you can see only one place to hide and no route away from it, you are holding a temporary pause, not a strong fighting position.

Avoid the exposed lip
Embark’s Patch 1.29.0 notes say ARC can see Raiders near the edge of cover more easily than Raiders deeper in foliage or behind smoke. That is specifically an ARC-vision observation. It does not guarantee that human players cannot see you in foliage or smoke; angle, movement, contrast, and the opponent’s line of sight still matter.
Use the information in a narrow way: do not stand with your body or head on the exposed rim longer than necessary when ARC detection matters. Step farther behind the object, peek briefly, and return to concealment. If you need to cross from one piece of cover to another, wait for a distraction, choose the shortest exposure, and avoid stopping in the open between them.
Keep your position unpredictable
Holding one angle for too long gives an opponent time to triangulate you from sound, muzzle flash, or a teammate’s callout. After a short peek, either gather a new piece of information and reposition or decide that the angle is not worth holding. You do not need to sprint constantly; a small change in height, side, or cover can be enough to prevent an easy pre-aim.

Reading sound and other cues
Footsteps provide direction, not certainty
Patch 1.29.0 described improvements to footsteps and binaural audio intended to clarify distance, elevation, and direction. Store Update 2.1.0, dated October 13, 2026, later reduced overly loud outdoor footsteps and balanced their volume across surfaces. These changes make audio useful, but they do not establish an exact audible range or make any surface a guaranteed advantage.

When you hear movement, form a range of possibilities rather than a single conclusion. The sound may be above or below you, on the other side of an obstacle, or from a player moving away. Pause long enough to compare the cue with the map, visible entrances, and your squad’s positions. If the sound is your only evidence, avoid committing your entire run to a blind push.
Combine audio with visual and map information
Use pings, map awareness, and teammate communication to turn an uncertain cue into a shared decision. Call the direction and confidence level: “movement east, possibly below,” is more useful than “enemy here.” Update the call when the sound stops, changes elevation, or is masked by ARC activity. Update 2.1.0 mentions improved long-range ping placement on certain ARC; that does not establish a particular range for Raider-detection pings.
When to engage: a practical checklist
Before firing, answer these questions quickly:
- Location: Do you know where the other Raider is, or are you guessing from one sound?
- Cover: Can you fight from useful cover, and is there a second position to move to?
- Distance: Does your weapon suit the likely range and the time the fight may last?
- Resources: Do you have enough ammunition, healing, armor, and utility to survive a follow-up exchange?
- Support: Can teammates cover different angles without bunching into one line of fire?
- Stakes: Is the possible reward worth risking the equipment and loot already in your backpack?
- Exit: If the first exchange goes badly, can you break contact and still reach an extraction option?
Engage when the position, cover, route, loadout, and stakes create a plausible advantage. If several answers are negative, holding fire is an active decision, not a failure. Move to a better angle, let the other Raider pass, or withdraw toward extraction.
Information advantage versus surprise
Surprise is valuable only if you can convert it into a safe first exchange. A shot from a weak position may reveal you without giving you room to finish the fight. Conversely, allowing an opponent to move into a predictable lane can give your squad time to coordinate. Decide whether your first action improves your position or merely starts a noisy fight.

Loadout should shape your route
Do not choose a route and then hope your equipment fits it. A loadout built for close-range pressure wants cover, corners, and short transitions. A setup intended for longer sightlines needs visibility and a retreat path, but it should not force you to stand exposed. Carrying limited healing or ammunition should lower the number of fights you accept. The developer design principle is that loadout should influence which fights players take and how they move through the world; it is not a promise that a particular weapon wins an encounter.
Squad positioning and communication
Spread enough to create options
Teammates should be close enough to support one another, but not stacked in the same doorway or behind the same rock. A single grenade, burst, ARC attack, or flank can punish a group that shares one line of fire. Use nearby cover pieces that let one player watch an approach while another watches the likely rotation.
Assign simple responsibilities
- Caller: identifies the likely enemy direction and whether the squad is fighting or leaving.
- Anchor: holds the safest retreat route and prevents a flank.
- Pressure player: takes the brief peek or forces movement only when the team can support it.
- Rear check: watches for a second squad or ARC pressure while the others loot or reposition.
These are communication roles, not permanent classes. Change them when terrain, health, or ammunition changes. The most important call is often “leave,” delivered before everyone is committed.

How to disengage without turning a retreat into a wipe
- Stop trading from the same spot. Repeatedly peeking one angle lets the opponent pre-aim your return.
- Break line of sight. Move behind deeper cover, through smoke or foliage where appropriate, or around terrain that blocks the opponent’s view.
- Use a staggered retreat. One player moves while another watches the next crossing, then swap. Do not have the whole squad sprint blind at once.
- Reassess after the move. Check health, ammunition, teammate positions, ARC activity, and the remaining route to extraction.
- Abandon optional loot. If carrying more would require another exposed stop, leave it. Your existing haul has value only if it reaches the extraction point.
No extraction point is established as universally safe. Treat every final approach as another positioning problem: identify cover before entering the area, listen for other players, and keep an exit if the first route becomes contested.

Standard PvPvE and the temporary PvE matchmaking beta
Embark scheduled a PvE matchmaking toggle beta for October 13–20, 2026. It is a dated test configuration, not a permanent promise. The following differences apply to the notice’s beta rules and may change after the test window.
| Factor | Standard PvPvE | PvE beta option |
|---|---|---|
| Player-to-player damage | Raiders can damage one another under standard matchmaking rules. | Zero player-to-player damage. |
| Stun and fire throwables | Available according to normal game rules. | Do not work on other players. |
| Loot value | Standard matchmaking loot rules. | Overall loot value is lowered. |
| Map conditions | Standard eligibility. | Night Raid, Locked Gate, Hidden Bunker, Frigate, and Redirection do not offer the PvE option during the test. |
| Squad matching | Standard matchmaking applies. | Squad separation is not prioritized; queue composition can differ from what a player expects. |
| Queue experience | Depends on region and population. | Wait times may be affected in low-population regions or quiet hours. |
The beta notice also describes an eight-second grace period after a player is downed before ARC may reacquire them; ARC may attack if it catches a player moving after that period. That rule belongs to the beta configuration and should not be generalized to normal PvPvE play. If you are choosing the beta to practice movement or map navigation, remember that its lower loot value and disabled player damage change the stakes of every positioning decision.
What changed recently and what not to assume
Update 2.1.0
Store Update 2.1.0 is dated October 13, 2026. It adjusted outdoor footstep volume and included fixes affecting grapple traversal and map issues. Audio impressions can therefore differ from older guides, especially outdoors.
Frozen Trail 2.0
Frozen Trail 2.0, dated October 8, 2026, added Pendola Pass, a Grappling Hook, and other content. Its notes state that Solo vs. Squads is no longer available in matchmaking. Do not rely on older January 2026 advice describing that option for level-40-and-above solo Raiders or its historical +20% end-of-round XP bonus; those details are not current matchmaking guidance after the later removal.
Weapon advice
There is no current official weapon tier list established here. A June 2025 developer post discussed design axes such as range, versatility, fight pacing, and role separation, but later balancing means those historical examples should not be treated as present rankings. Choose weapons by the distance and route your run can realistically support, then verify current patch notes before changing a build for a balance claim.
A repeatable decision drill for every run
- Before leaving cover: mark the next cover, the fallback cover, and the direction of extraction.
- After a cue: state what is known, what is guessed, and what would confirm the guess.
- Before firing: check distance, supplies, teammate support, and the value already in your backpack.
- After the first exchange: move before re-peeking, then decide whether the opponent is still worth contesting.
- When the run’s value rises: lower your tolerance for open crossings and optional fights.
- At extraction: assume another player may contest the approach; use cover and keep a retreat line until the run is complete.
This process does not guarantee a win, because opponents, ARC behavior, map conditions, and queue populations change. It does give you a consistent way to turn uncertain information into a deliberate choice: fight from an advantage, reposition to create one, or preserve the run by leaving.
