Arcadegeddon Review: Is the Free Co-op Shooter Worth Playing?

Arcadegeddon is a free-to-play third-person roguelite shooter with solo play, co-op for up to four players and optional PvP challenges. Here’s what the listings and review snapshots establish—and what they don’t.

Arcadegeddon is a free-to-play third-person shooter built around repeatable roguelite runs, colorful arcade-style combat and online co-op for up to four players. Its mix of PvE fights, loot and optional mid-run PvP challenges gives groups plenty to do, but the available evidence does not establish how lively matchmaking is today or how satisfying the game feels solo. It is most promising for players who want a free shooter to tackle with friends and are comfortable with a loop that may feel repetitive over time.

What kind of game is Arcadegeddon?

Arcadegeddon is a third-person cooperative roguelite shooter from IllFonic. Its premise puts players in the role of defending Gilly, a local arcade owner, after a mega-corporation infects his new super-game with a virus. Runs move through distinct biomes and stages, where players fight enemies and bosses, gather loot, open hidden chests and take on mini-games.

The loop combines cooperative PvE progression with optional competitive interruptions: Epic says players can challenge friends to PvP during a run for bonus loot. That gives the game a different rhythm from a purely team-focused shooter, though the listings do not explain how frequently PvP occurs or whether it can be avoided in every mode. Steam’s feature and game listing and Epic’s description establish the advertised setup, not a hands-on assessment of its moment-to-moment execution.

Can you play Arcadegeddon solo or with friends?

Yes. Steam lists single-player, online co-op, online PvP and cross-platform multiplayer. The official listings advertise solo play and co-op for up to four players (you and up to three friends). PlayStation says online play is optional and lists one-player capability as well as up to four online players; on PlayStation, online multiplayer requires PS Plus.

World War Z - Xbox One
  • Battle swarms of hundreds of zombies - the Swarm Engine seamlessly renders hordes of zombies in incredible firefights. Advanced gore systems offer gruesomely satisfying action.
  • Coop story-driven campaigns - survive around the world, as unique groups tell their stories of perseverance.
  • Fight other players for survival - several intense Player vs Player vs Zombies game modes complement the coop campaigns.
  • Grow stronger - unlock powerful weapon upgrades and level 6 character classes to take on greater challenges.

Those listings confirm advertised modes, but they do not establish current player counts, queue times or how reliably cross-play works between every platform. If playing alone is your priority, treat the solo option as a feature rather than proof that the game is equally engaging without a group. Some launch-period criticism cited weaker solo appeal, but that is a historical review observation, not a verified assessment of the game today.

Is Arcadegeddon free to play?

The storefronts covered here list the base game as free: Steam labels it Free to Play, Epic lists the Windows base game as free, and PlayStation lists free PS4 and PS5 editions. Availability and terms can vary by region and change, so check the store for your account and territory before downloading.

Free access does not mean there are no optional purchases. Epic notes that the game may include in-app purchases; PlayStation says in-game purchases are optional; and the ESRB flags in-game purchases that include random items. Steam also lists a Deluxe Upgrade and soundtrack add-ons. The available information does not show that spending is required to play the base game.

What do reviews say about Arcadegeddon?

Available assessments lean favorable overall but point to different audiences and different limitations. Steam’s live user-review snapshot was 76% positive from 1,011 reviews when accessed on October 7, 2026. Metacritic’s PS5 critic page showed a 73 Metascore from 14 critic reviews at the same access date: seven positive, seven mixed and none negative. These figures are not directly comparable—one aggregates Steam user reviews and the other summarizes a small, platform-specific set of critic reviews—and both can change.

Sniper Elite 5 (XSX/XONE)
  • EXPANSIVE CAMPAIGN: Many real-world locations have been captured using photogrammetry to recreate a living, immersive environment, and multiple infiltration and extraction points and kill list targets provide a whole new perspective on each mission. Take on the Nazi plot solo or work with a partner, with improved co-op mechanics allowing you to share ammo and items, give orders and heal each other.
  • ADVANCED GUNPLAY PHYSICS AND TRAVERSAL: Use ziplines, slide down slopes and shimmy along ledges to reach the perfect vantage point, or to sneak past a sharp-eyed lookout. Factor in rifle stock and barrel options along with gravity, wind and heart rate while you line up your sights on the target.
  • HIGH CALIBRE CUSTOMISATION: Use workbenches to customise and upgrade virtually every aspect of your weapon – change scopes, stocks, barrels, magazines and more. Rifles, secondaries and pistols all have a huge variety of options. On top of that you can select the ammo to suit your target, from armour-piercing right down to non-lethal.
  • INVASION MODE – CAMPAIGN DROP IN PvP AND CO-OP: Invade another player’s Campaign as an Axis sniper and engage in a deadly game of cat and mouse, providing a new dimension to the challenge as you stalk your prey. Alternatively, as Karl you can call for assistance and have a second sniper drop in to help you out of a tricky situation.
  • TENSE ADVERSIAL MULTIPLAYER: Customise your character and loadout and earn XP, medals and ribbons as you take on intensely competitive 16 player battles that will really test your sharpshooting skills. If co-op’s more your style, you can team up with up to 3 other players against waves of enemies in Survival mode.

Critic excerpts and storefront descriptions highlight the colorful presentation, gunplay, cooperative fun and replayable arcade challenges. In a review excerpt reproduced on Steam, Screen Rant wrote, “Arcadegeddon blends recognizable aesthetics, tight level design, satisfying gunplay, & a medley of challenges to make an awesome third-person shooter,” awarding it 4.5/5. Epic displayed a 4.4 player rating when accessed in 2026, another changeable storefront snapshot.

The reservations are worth weighing too. Displayed critic excerpts raise concerns about limited enemy variety, generic structure or progression depth; some launch-period reviews also noted technical roughness. Those are attributed review impressions, not evidence that the same bugs persist now. In practical terms, the strongest case is for players who enjoy the arcade look, shooting and repeat runs with friends. If you need a substantial solo campaign or steadily novel content, the available evidence offers less reassurance.

Is Arcadegeddon suitable for younger players?

The ESRB rates the game T for Teen for animated blood, mild language and violence. Its rating summary describes players using machine guns, rifles and saw blades against robotic enemies; the robots emit pink and purple blood. The ESRB also flags user interactions and in-game purchases, including random items. These details can help families judge whether the content and online features suit a particular player; the rating is not a substitute for individual preferences.

Who should try Arcadegeddon?

  • Try it if you want a free-to-play shooter with colorful arcade presentation, repeatable runs, loot and co-op for up to four players.
  • Be cautious if you mainly want a deep solo campaign, extensive enemy variety or clear evidence of active matchmaking. The listings and review snapshots do not settle those questions.
  • Check before downloading whether the game is available on your platform and in your region, and whether your platform requires an online subscription for multiplayer.
