There is no evidence-backed universal winner. Choose Arctis GameBuds for Xbox if you specifically want in-ear earbuds, active noise cancellation, transparency mode, a charging case and quick switching between Xbox wireless and a phone. Choose the Xbox Wireless Headset if you prefer an over-ear fit, a bendable boom microphone and physical game/chat and volume dials. This is a feature-based recommendation from official product documentation, not a hands-on sound, comfort or microphone test.
Quick answer: which one should you buy?
The two products solve different problems. Arctis GameBuds are true wireless earbuds built around a compact case, while the Xbox Wireless Headset is a conventional over-ear headset with cushioned earcups and an adjustable headband. Your preferred fit and controls matter more than the product names.

What each product is
Arctis GameBuds for Xbox
Arctis GameBuds are in-ear wireless earbuds supplied with a USB-C 2.4 GHz gaming dongle and a charging case. SteelSeries describes the Xbox model as plug-and-play through the dongle. A USB-C-to-USB-A converter is included for devices that do not provide a suitable USB-C port. The product page lists Xbox, PC, PlayStation 5, Switch, VR, tablets and other devices as compatible, although the Xbox connection is the focus here.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For mobile use, the earbuds support Bluetooth 5.3. SteelSeries describes a quick switch between the 2.4 GHz gaming link and Bluetooth: triple-tap an earbud to change modes. The earbuds have built-in microphones and buttons for volume, mute and call controls. Three eartip sizes—small, medium and large—are supplied so the user can select a seal.
Xbox Wireless Headset
The Xbox Wireless Headset is an over-ear model listed for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10 and Windows 11, plus Bluetooth mobile devices. Microsoft lists 40 mm speakers, a bendable boom with dual microphones, Bluetooth 5.3 with A2DP, HFP and HSP profiles, and the SBC codec. Its published weight is 11 ounces (320 grams).
Power and pairing use a button, while a separate mute button controls the microphone. The left earcup has a game/chat balance dial and the right earcup has a volume dial. That layout lets you make common adjustments by touch instead of reaching for an on-screen menu or phone.

GameBuds: dongle-based 2.4 GHz plus Bluetooth
For Xbox gaming, SteelSeries documents the included 2.4 GHz USB-C dongle as the gaming connection. Plug the dongle into the console; use the supplied USB-C-to-USB-A converter if the available port requires it. The dongle is intended to make the Xbox connection plug-and-play rather than relying on a general Bluetooth pairing process.
Bluetooth is a separate path for a phone or other compatible device. A triple tap of an earbud switches between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth, according to SteelSeries. That is useful when you want to take a call or listen to phone audio without removing the earbuds, but the published documentation does not establish that both audio paths mix simultaneously.
Xbox Wireless Headset: Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth
Microsoft lists Xbox Wireless compatibility for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, along with Bluetooth 5.3 for phones and Windows PCs. Microsoft also says the headset can pair to a phone and console at the same time, allowing phone chat while you continue playing. The official specification does not describe a USB gaming dongle for the Xbox connection.
To begin, turn on the headset and use its pairing control with the console’s Xbox pairing process. For a phone, select the headset in the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Exact menu wording can vary by console software and phone operating system, so follow the on-screen pairing prompt for your devices.

Microphones and physical controls
Why the Xbox headset is the safer choice for boom-mic users
The Xbox Wireless Headset has a bendable boom with dual microphones. You can position the boom near your mouth and press the physical mute control when needed. The left-earcup game/chat dial is designed for quickly shifting the balance between game audio and voice chat, while the right-earcup dial changes overall volume.
This arrangement is especially relevant if you frequently adjust chat during multiplayer matches or do not want to use a controller menu. Microsoft documents the controls and microphone hardware, but it does not publish a comparative measurement showing that the boom sounds clearer than the GameBuds’ microphones.
GameBuds: built-in microphones and earbud buttons
GameBuds place their microphones inside the earbuds rather than on a movable boom. SteelSeries lists built-in microphones and earbud controls for volume, mute and calls. Button placement and fit can feel different from an over-ear headset, so the choice depends on whether you prefer an unobtrusive earbud design or a microphone you can physically position.
There is no official side-by-side recording or independent test in the available documentation. Select the Xbox headset for the boom-microphone form factor, not on an unsupported promise of superior chat quality.
Noise control, spatial audio and companion settings
GameBuds features
SteelSeries lists hybrid active noise cancellation and a transparency mode. ANC is intended to reduce external sound; transparency mode feeds outside sound back through the earbuds when you need awareness of your surroundings. The earbuds also list 360-degree spatial audio and game presets in the companion app. SteelSeries says the app provides more than 100 Xbox audio presets.
Those features address different needs. ANC and transparency affect the relationship between game audio and your environment, while spatial processing changes how supported game audio is presented. A preset is a software configuration, not evidence that every game will sound better with it enabled.
Xbox Wireless Headset features
Microsoft lists Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos and DTS Headphone:X support on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Compatible content is required for spatial sound. Microsoft states that Dolby Atmos is available at no extra cost with this headset. Microsoft also notes that DTS may require additional purchases, app downloads and supported hardware.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

The Xbox Accessories app provides equalizer settings, bass boost, auto-mute, LED-brightness and mic-monitoring controls for the headset. These are configuration options rather than a guarantee of a particular tuning or microphone result.

Published GameBuds estimate
SteelSeries labels the earbuds as providing up to 10 hours per charge and up to 40 hours total with the charging case. The 10-hour figure is specifically based on a 2.4 GHz connection with noise control turned off. The case can charge through USB-C or Qi wireless charging. Because the estimate uses a stated connection and noise-control condition, actual runtime will change when those conditions change.
Published Xbox Wireless Headset estimate
Microsoft states up to 20 hours per charge. It says a 30-minute charge provides about four hours and a full charge takes about three hours when the headset is not in use. Microsoft cautions that battery life varies substantially with distance from the console, additional accessories, usage and other factors, and says its testing used pre-production units.
These figures are manufacturer estimates made under different conditions. They do not prove that the Xbox headset lasts twice as long in comparable real-world use, and they should not be treated as a laboratory comparison.

Questions to answer before choosing
Do GameBuds connect to Xbox over Bluetooth?
The documented Xbox method is the included 2.4 GHz USB-C gaming dongle. Bluetooth 5.3 is described for phones and other compatible devices, so plan to use the dongle for Xbox rather than assuming the console will pair directly over ordinary Bluetooth.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can GameBuds mix Xbox and phone audio?
SteelSeries documents a triple-tap switch between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth. It does not document simultaneous mixing of both audio paths. Microsoft does document simultaneous phone-and-console pairing for the Xbox Wireless Headset, specifically for phone chat while playing.
What if the console has no suitable USB-C port?
SteelSeries includes a USB-C-to-USB-A converter with GameBuds. Check the ports on your Xbox and use the converter when the available port requires USB-A. The Xbox Wireless Headset does not require a gaming dongle according to Microsoft’s listed Xbox Wireless connection.

Which fit is easier to predict?
Neither fit can be judged universally from specifications. GameBuds include three eartip sizes, which lets you change the seal inside the ear. The Xbox headset uses cushioned earcups and an adjustable headband. Glasses, head shape, ear sensitivity and tolerance for in-ear pressure can all affect the personal result, so the published specifications cannot name a comfort winner.
What do the spatial-audio labels require?
Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos and DTS Headphone:X are listed for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, but compatible content is required. Dolby Atmos is stated to be available at no extra cost with the Xbox Wireless Headset. DTS may involve an additional purchase, an app download and supported hardware. GameBuds’ 360-degree spatial audio and presets likewise describe features, not a guarantee that every title uses them.
Is either battery figure a guaranteed session length?
No. GameBuds’ up-to-10-hour estimate is tied to 2.4 GHz use with noise control off, while the Xbox headset’s up-to-20-hour figure varies with distance, accessories and usage. Treat both as manufacturer estimates rather than promises for every session.
How to choose based on your setup
Choose GameBuds when you need earbuds and isolation options
- You already prefer an in-ear fit and want to choose among three eartip sizes.
- You want hybrid ANC for reducing outside noise or transparency mode for hearing your surroundings.
- You want a compact case rather than a full-size headset resting around your neck or on a desk.
- You move between Xbox and a phone and value a documented triple-tap switch between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth.
- You want to explore the companion app’s spatial-audio features and more than 100 Xbox presets.
Choose the Xbox Wireless Headset when you need an over-ear control layout
- You prefer cushioned earcups and an adjustable headband over earbuds.
- You want a bendable boom microphone that can be positioned near your mouth.
- You regularly alter game/chat balance and volume using physical dials.
- You want Microsoft’s documented simultaneous phone-and-console pairing for phone chat while playing.
- You plan to use Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos or DTS Headphone:X on Xbox and understand that supported content is required.
Setup checklist for Xbox
Setting up Arctis GameBuds
- Charge the earbuds and case using USB-C or Qi charging.
- Connect the included USB-C gaming dongle to the Xbox. If necessary, attach the supplied USB-C-to-USB-A converter first.
- Insert the earbuds with the eartips that provide the most secure fit.
- Use the earbud controls for volume or mute. Keep the connection on 2.4 GHz for Xbox gaming.
- For a phone, pair over Bluetooth 5.3. Triple-tap an earbud to switch between Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz.
- Install and configure the companion app if you want spatial-audio options or game presets.
Setting up the Xbox Wireless Headset
- Charge the headset before extended play. Microsoft lists about four hours of use from a 30-minute charge and about three hours for a full charge when not in use.
- Turn on the headset and start the Xbox Wireless pairing process on the console.
- Adjust the headband and earcups for an over-ear seal, then bend the boom toward your mouth.
- Use the left-earcup dial for game/chat balance and the right-earcup dial for volume.
- Press the mute control when you do not want the microphone active.
- Pair a phone through Bluetooth 5.3 if you want phone audio or Microsoft’s documented simultaneous phone-chat use.
- Open the Xbox Accessories app to adjust equalizer, bass boost, auto-mute, LED brightness or mic monitoring.
Buying and compatibility pitfalls
- Do not buy GameBuds expecting the Xbox to use their Bluetooth mode; the documented console path is the 2.4 GHz dongle.
- Do not assume the triple-tap switch means Xbox and phone audio are mixed at once; SteelSeries documents switching, not simultaneous mixing.
- Keep the GameBuds converter in the box if your console setup needs USB-A, because the dongle itself uses USB-C.
- Remember that ANC runtime is not represented by the 10-hour GameBuds estimate, which is measured with noise control off.
- Do not budget for a DTS license based solely on the headset listing; Microsoft says DTS may require extra purchases, downloads and hardware, while Dolby Atmos is listed at no extra cost with the headset.
- Check current regional pricing, stock and retailer terms separately. The cited product specifications do not establish a current price or availability.
What the official information does not establish
The available SteelSeries and Microsoft product pages describe features and specifications, but they do not provide controlled comparative tests. There is no evidence here to rank the products for soundstage, bass quality, long-session comfort, microphone clarity, connection reliability or durability. Earbud fit is highly individual, and an over-ear headset’s comfort depends on head shape, glasses and tolerance for clamping pressure.
Retail prices, discounts, current stock, regional availability and retailer listings are also not established. Check the product pages and the retailer you intend to use for current regional information. The specifications were checked against official pages accessed on October 13, 2026; manufacturers may change those pages.
Bottom line
For Xbox players deciding strictly by documented features, Arctis GameBuds are the focused choice for in-ear gaming, ANC or transparency, a charging case and rapid Xbox-to-phone switching. The Xbox Wireless Headset is the focused choice for over-ear wear, a physical boom microphone, tactile game/chat and volume controls, and Microsoft’s Xbox spatial-audio support. Pick the form factor and controls you will actually use; the available evidence does not justify declaring either product the universal winner.
