Arduino Asteroids: Three Build Paths, Parts and Code Notes

Arduino Asteroids can mean several different builds. Compare the MAX72XX avoidance game, an UNO OLED console, a PyBadge CircuitPython guide and a Gameduino vector recreation before choosing parts and wiring.

There is no single standard Arduino Asteroids build. The simplest documented Arduino route is a falling-asteroid avoidance game on a MAX72XX LED matrix; an UNO-and-OLED project adds movement and firing, while a more elaborate recreation targets the Gameduino 3X Dazzler. Choose the project that matches your display and controls, then follow its wiring and library instructions rather than mixing parts between builds.

Choose the kind of Asteroids game you want to build

These projects differ in hardware, graphics and gameplay. The MAX72XX project is a compact survival game, not a full recreation of the arcade original. The OLED console documents movement and firing controls, while the Gameduino route focuses on the original game’s vector-like appearance. A separate CircuitPython guide offers another handheld-style path, but it is not an Arduino sketch.

Build Platform and display Controls and gameplay Software
MAX72XX matrix game Arduino Mega 2560 Rev3 and MAXREFDES99# MAX7219 display-driver shield Two buttons; steer horizontally and avoid falling asteroids Arduino code using LedControl
UNO OLED console Arduino UNO R3 and 128×64 SSD1306 I2C OLED Four buttons; movement, firing and exit controls U8g2 and Wire
PyBadge guide Adafruit PyBadge; the guide also names PyGamer and EdgeBadge variants Asteroids-like game using handheld controls CircuitPython and Stage
Vector recreation Gameduino 3X Dazzler Emphasis on vector-style rendering and display effects Gameduino graphics approach

These are independent projects, not interchangeable wiring diagrams. Match the board, display, control wiring and libraries to the specific implementation you follow.

Build the MAX72XX matrix avoidance game

The Arduino Project Hub project, published February 4, 2018, is the clearest route if you want a small game with simple controls. Its listed hardware is a Mega 2560 Rev3, MAXREFDES99# MAX7219 display-driver shield, two 12 mm pushbuttons, a buzzer and a breadboard. The project page and code are available at Arduino Project Hub; a related code repository is HenryQuillin’s arduino_asteroid_game.

  • Organized for Repeatable Learning: Pre-soldered modules, a solderless breadboard, storage case and small-parts box reduce setup time and keep sensors, LEDs, ICs, wires and other components easy to find between projects

What the game does

The ship moves left and right across the display while asteroids advance toward it. The code tracks eight columns, introduces and moves asteroids, increments a survival score, and increases the game speed over time. This is an avoidance game: its documented design is about surviving longer, rather than reproducing every mechanic of the arcade original.

Check the connections against your hardware

The code comments describe MAX72XX data, clock and load connections on pins 12, 11 and 10. The two buttons are assigned to pins 2 and 3, configured with INPUT_PULLUP and handled using falling-edge interrupts. Treat these as the assignments in this particular project, not universal MAX7219 or Arduino pin requirements: the project itself warns that its pin numbers may not work with every hardware setup. Verify the connections for your board and display module before powering the circuit.

ELEGOO UNO R3 Project Super Starter Kit with PDF Tutorial for Beginners
  • TURN CODE INTO REAL-WORLD RESULTS — Follow 22+ guided lessons to make LEDs blink, read temperature and distance, move servo and stepper motors, control an LCD and respond to joystick or IR input; ideal for a family weekend build, homeschool unit, coding club or STEM classroom
  • MORE PROJECT VARIETY IN ONE ORGANIZED KIT — Includes the UNO R3 controller, LCD1602 with pre-soldered header, breadboard power module, ultrasonic and DHT11 sensors, joystick, IR receiver and remote, SG90 servo, stepper motor, relay, DC motor, fan blade, displays, LEDs, buttons, resistors and jumper wires
  • START WITHOUT SOLDERING — Plug-in modules, a solderless breadboard and the pre-soldered LCD help beginners focus on wiring, code and testing; the illustrated component list makes it easier to find each part and move from one lesson to the next
  • LEARN THE LOGIC, THEN CREATE YOUR OWN — Use Arduino IDE and the included example code to understand digital input and output, analog sensing, timing, motor control and display functions, then change thresholds, speeds and sequences for alarms, environmental monitors, reaction games and motion projects
  • CLEAR SETUP SUPPORT FOR FIRST-TIME BUILDERS — Download the latest tutorial and code, select the UNO board and correct computer port, check component polarity and breadboard rows, and keep power-module input at 9V or below; younger learners should work with an experienced adult

The listed display is a MAXREFDES99# shield. A generic MAX7219 LED matrix module may differ in dimensions, interface or pin mapping, so confirm compatibility with the code and wiring rather than assuming it is a drop-in replacement.

Use an UNO and OLED for a more console-like control scheme

The documented OLED project pairs an Arduino UNO R3 with a 128×64 SSD1306 I2C display, four buttons and a buzzer. It lists U8g2 and Wire, and provides controls for moving, firing and exiting. See the project in the Arduino OLED Gaming Console repository.

Project-specific wiring and memory choice

That implementation connects OLED SDA to A4 and SCL to A5, the buttons to D2 through D5, and the buzzer to D7. It uses U8g2’s SSD1306 hardware-I2C page-buffer constructor; the project explains that the page buffer reduces RAM use on the UNO. These pin assignments and display setup describe that project only. Check the repository’s code and your exact display before wiring, especially if your board or OLED module differs.

Consider CircuitPython or vector graphics instead

PyBadge with CircuitPython

The Adafruit guide is an Asteroids-like handheld game built for the PyBadge, not an Arduino-board sketch. It uses CircuitPython and the Stage library, which supplies helpers for sound, sprites and collision detection. The required list names a PyBadge and USB cable; a 3.7V 400mAh LiPo battery, speaker and printed case are optional. The guide also identifies PyGamer and EdgeBadge variants. Read the Asteroids – CircuitPython Game guide for the appropriate board-specific instructions.

Gameduino 3X Dazzler

If the priority is a visual treatment closer to the original game’s vector-list look, the Gameduino 3X Dazzler project discusses line rendering, additive blending and display effects. It is a more specialized graphics route than drawing a simple game on an LED matrix. Its update was published October 1, 2020; see Crowd Supply’s Gameduino 3X Dazzler Asteroids update.

Plan the parts and software around one project

  • For the matrix game: start with the specified Mega 2560 Rev3, MAXREFDES99# shield, two momentary pushbuttons, buzzer and breadboard; use the project’s LedControl-based code.
  • For the UNO OLED console: use a UNO R3, compatible 128×64 SSD1306 I2C display, four buttons and buzzer, with the project’s U8g2 and Wire setup.
  • For the PyBadge game: use the PyBadge and USB cable listed as required, and follow the CircuitPython guide rather than Arduino pin instructions.
  • For the vector recreation: follow the Gameduino 3X Dazzler project; its graphics approach is not a substitute for the matrix or OLED libraries.

Before buying a display module or assembling a circuit, compare its interface, dimensions and pin mapping with the chosen project’s requirements. A matching product name alone does not establish that a different module will work with the same code.
