A security compromise affecting some Nintendo Switch hardware is not proof that every Switch model or unit can be cracked in the same way. “Cracked” can mean a security flaw, running unauthorized code, using a circumvention device, or playing pirated games; those are different claims.
What does “cracked” mean for a Switch?
The word is often used as shorthand, but it can describe several distinct things:
- A security vulnerability: a weakness in software or hardware that may permit an attack.
- Code execution or modification: running code or changing a console beyond its intended configuration. Homebrew and unauthorized modifications are not the same thing as piracy.
- A circumvention device: Nintendo identifies mod chips and piracy cartridges as devices intended to circumvent its protections.
- Playing unauthorized copies: this is a separate use of circumvention and should not be inferred merely from the existence of a vulnerability.
Evidence for one category does not establish the others, and a technical finding about one hardware revision does not establish that every retail console is affected.
Can every Nintendo Switch be hacked?
The evidence cited here does not establish a current, exhaustive model-by-model vulnerability assessment. A 2019 technical paper describes security analysis that combined software analysis of userland and operating-system services with examination of trusted bootstrap code in ROM. Its abstract says the researchers exposed information about a security co-processor and developed an attack chain. That is a description of specific historical research, not proof that every Switch can be compromised by the same method.

#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Nintendo’s 2024 complaint says a hardware update introduced in 2018 patched a particular hack. That is Nintendo’s account in litigation, not an independent audit of every model, unit, or firmware state. It does, however, make hardware revision an important qualification: claims about one version should not automatically be applied to another.
Which Switch models are covered by these claims?
Nintendo’s 2024 complaint identifies the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED as members of the Switch family. That product-family label does not mean that the same vulnerability applies to all three, or to every hardware revision within a product line.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Without a current, reliable model-specific assessment, it would be misleading to rank individual models as “hackable” or “unhackable.” The defensible conclusion is narrower: Nintendo has described a 2018 hardware update as patching a particular hack, while the reviewed technical paper documents research on Switch security without establishing universal exposure across the family.
What does Nintendo say about mod chips and warranty risks?
Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ calls mod chips and piracy cartridges circumvention devices. Nintendo says mod chips are soldered to the console motherboard and void the warranty. It also warns that unauthorized devices may impair functionality or cause problems after network updates. These are Nintendo’s consumer warnings; they are not a legal conclusion about every user or jurisdiction.

- Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
Nintendo says it is working to protect the industry’s ability to invest in games and to give legally sold games a chance to succeed. That is the company’s stated rationale for its education and enforcement efforts, not a technical finding about which console revisions are vulnerable.
What legal action tells us—and what it does not
A U.S. district court has granted a default judgment and permanent injunction in a separate case involving distribution of pirated Nintendo Switch games and circumvention software. The order notes that the defendant did not respond. It concerns the conduct and parties in that case; it does not determine whether every Switch console has a security vulnerability or whether all models can be modified in the same way.

How large was the Switch family by 2024?
In its February 2024 complaint, Nintendo of America said the Switch family had sold over 139 million units worldwide. This is a dated figure from Nintendo’s court filing, not a current sales total. The scale helps explain why security and piracy issues attract attention, but sales numbers do not establish how many consoles are vulnerable.
Quick Recap
