Yes—PlayStation 2 consoles can play original PlayStation games, but that does not guarantee every game will work perfectly on every PS2 revision. Sony lists PlayStation-format CD-ROMs as playable on its SCPH-75000 series, while warning that some PlayStation software may behave differently or fail to operate properly. If you need a particular game to work, check that title and the condition of the console rather than relying on a blanket guarantee.
Can a PS2 play PS1 games?
Sony’s Japanese SCPH-75000 series manual lists PlayStation-format CD-ROMs alongside PlayStation 2 CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs as playable discs. That establishes PS1 disc support for this model family.
However, the manual cautions that some PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software may behave differently from earlier systems or may not operate properly. Sony does not provide a complete, title-by-title compatibility guarantee in the cited documentation. So the practical answer is: PS2 consoles support PS1 games, but verify the specific game if reliable operation matters.
What to check before playing
Confirm the exact console model
PS2 hardware was released in many revisions and localized variants. Sony’s hardware-manual index lists model groups from SCPH-10000 through SCPH-90000. The disc and software caveat cited above comes specifically from the Japanese SCPH-75000 manual; it is not a complete compatibility matrix for every revision or region.
#1 Best Overall
- The Playstation 2 system lets you play original PS1 games as well as the huge selection of PS2 games
- Includes: Playstation 2 System, 1 Dual Shock 2 Controller, AC Cable, AV Cable
- Color: Black
- PlayStation2 is equipped with a 128-bit Emotion Engine processor that enables lightning-fast gameplay and impressive graphics power
Find the SCPH number on the console label and consult the manual for that exact family when a model-specific detail matters. Also consider the console’s condition: support for a disc format cannot compensate for a unit that no longer reads discs reliably.
Use a PS1 memory card for PS1 saves
To save PS1 game data while playing on a PS2, use a PlayStation memory card, model SCPH-1020. Sony’s manual says PS1 software data cannot be saved to a PS2 memory card. A PS1-format save copied onto a PS2 memory card also cannot be loaded from that card as native PS1 game data. See the manual’s memory-card section.

Check accessory compatibility separately
Playing PS1 software is not the same as supporting every PS2 peripheral. Sony’s accessory compatibility table distinguishes console families including SCPH-10000, 30000, 50000, 70000 and 90000. For example, the SCPH-90000 stand is listed for that family, while older expansion-bay HDD and Broadband Unit products are limited to certain early families. Check the exact SCPH number before buying a stand, multitap, hard drive or network adapter.
How to decide whether a particular PS2 will work for you
- Identify the console: Read its SCPH model number and use the matching Sony manual where available.
- Check the game: Sony’s documentation warns of exceptions, so do not assume a specific PS1 title is guaranteed to behave correctly.
- Assess the disc reader: A compatible format still requires a working console and a readable disc.
- Plan for saves: Have a PS1 memory card (SCPH-1020) if you want to save PS1 game progress.
- Verify peripherals independently: Match accessories to the console family using Sony’s compatibility table.
What the service dates do—and do not—tell you
Sony Japan’s after-service notice lists service endings in Japan for most PS2 families on March 31, 2014, and for SCPH-90000 on August 31, 2018. These are Japan-specific service dates; they should not be treated as a statement about repair availability in every country, nor do they determine whether a console can play PS1 games.
