Real Steam gift cards are legitimate; websites or messages claiming they can generate unlimited free Steam codes are a different matter. Steam does not validate those offers. Treat requests for your login, a gift-card code, payment, a survey, or a download as warning signs, and redeem codes only through Steam’s official flow.
Real Steam gift cards versus “free code” promises
Steam sells gift cards in digital and physical forms. Its official gift-card page explains that they work like gift certificates and can be redeemed for purchases on Steam, including games and software. Digital cards are sent through Steam; physical cards can also be redeemed to an account.

That product is not evidence that an unrelated website, giveaway message, or “Steam gift card generator” can produce a valid code for free. Steam’s product information does not endorse such generators. The specific site you encountered may not have been investigated, so judge its behavior rather than assume every offer follows the same scam.
Warning signs in free Steam code offers
- It asks you to sign in through a link in an unsolicited message. Don’t enter your Steam credentials or Steam Guard code on a page reached that way.
- It asks for a gift-card code, PIN, or photo. Anyone with the card details may be able to use the value. The FTC advises not to give those numbers or send a card photo to someone demanding payment.
- It demands payment, a survey, or a download to reveal a code. These are warning signs, not proof that every individual site is fraudulent. They are not part of Steam’s official gift-card redemption flow.
- A person claims you must pay them with Steam cards. Steam warns that someone asking for Steam Wallet Gift Cards as payment is most likely targeting you in a scam. Steam says the value is for redemption on Steam, not a payment method for taxes, debts, bail, fees, or a stranger.
- A stranger offers a code as payment in a trade. Steam warns that such an offer can involve a fake code or a chargeback. Don’t treat it as guaranteed payment.
How to redeem a code safely
- Open Steam yourself using the official app or by typing Steam’s known address. Avoid sign-in links in unsolicited giveaways.
- Sign in and use Steam’s official Wallet Code redemption page. Steam requires login to redeem.
- Enter the code only on Steam. Steam says the value converts to the currency of your account’s wallet, regardless of where the code was purchased.
If you already shared a code or paid for a card
You shared the code or card details
Keep the card and receipt, contact Steam Support, and report the incident to the FTC if applicable. The FTC also recommends contacting the gift-card company, asking whether the money can be returned, and reporting the scam. In the United States, its gift-card scam guidance explains how to report it.

Keep the receipt and ask the retailer to check refund eligibility. Steam says an activated but unredeemed card is normally refundable at retail, but that is not a guarantee for every retailer or transaction. Do not give the code to anyone while seeking help.

A legitimate digital or physical Steam gift card is a real product, but the sources cited here do not establish a reliable way to obtain free wallet codes through a generator. A promotion should be treated as unverified unless its source and terms are clear; never exchange your account access or card details for a promised code.
