Sometimes—but a G2A listing is not a guarantee that its key is genuine, compatible, or redeemable. G2A operates a marketplace connecting buyers and sellers; the seller, not G2A, is the other party in the transaction. The platform describes seller checks and fraud-prevention measures, but those measures do not establish the provenance or activation outcome of every individual key.
What “legit” means when you buy a G2A key
There are three separate questions behind “Are G2A keys legit?”:
| Question | What can be established |
|---|---|
| Is G2A a functioning marketplace? | G2A’s terms describe a service that connects buyers and sellers and provides marketplace tools and other services. |
| Does G2A say it checks sellers and listings? | Yes. G2A describes verification for business sellers and fraud-prevention systems. These are company claims about its controls, not independent proof that every offer is legitimate. |
| Will this particular key work for you? | That depends on the key’s authenticity, the game and edition, the platform, regional restrictions, and whether the code can be redeemed. Platform-level safeguards cannot independently confirm those facts for an individual offer. |
So, “G2A is a real marketplace” and “G2A says it uses safeguards” are not the same as “this listing is safe to buy.” G2A’s available materials do not provide independent, transaction-level authentication for every key, nor a guarantee that every code will activate.
What G2A’s safeguards do—and don’t—tell you
G2A’s buyer guidance says listings provide details such as the platform, compatibility, description, price, and seller ratings. The company also says it verifies business sellers and uses fraud-prevention measures. Those details can help you assess an offer, but the claims come from G2A itself; they do not independently verify a specific code’s source or redemption status.

There has also been public controversy about where marketplace keys come from. In an earlier statement concerning Gearbox, G2A asserted that keys sold on its marketplace came from legitimate sources and discussed how developers could provide evidence about allegedly illicit keys. That statement is a historical company position, not independent validation of current listings or a guarantee about an individual purchase.
Check an offer before paying
Read the listing and checkout details as a single package. A low price is not useful if the key is for the wrong edition, platform, or region, or if the delivery and remedy terms do not fit your expectations.

- Game and edition: Confirm the exact title and edition, including any platform-specific or region-specific version.
- Platform: Make sure the key is for the store or launcher you use. A key for one platform generally cannot be treated as a key for another.
- Region: Check where the key can be activated and whether that includes the region of your account.
- Seller: Review the seller information and ratings, while remembering that a rating is not proof of this key’s provenance.
- Delivery: Check how and when the key will be delivered, and whether the listing’s stated terms match what you expect.
- Final price and terms: Review the total at checkout and the offer’s return, replacement, or other remedy conditions before completing the purchase.
If a key does not activate
- Recheck the listing. Compare the key’s platform and region with your account and the store where you are trying to redeem it.
- Enter it carefully. Check for typing errors and follow the platform’s redemption steps.
- Save the exact error. Keep the message or take a screenshot. Record your order information and the steps that led to the rejection.
- Contact the seller or G2A support. Provide the order details and error evidence, and consult the offer terms and current Support Hub guidance for the applicable process.
Do not assume that a refund or replacement is automatic. G2A’s terms describe a buyer–seller transaction, and the Support Hub provides guidance on Buyer Protection, seller return policies, missing or non-working keys, and wrong-platform or wrong-region cases. Which remedy applies depends on the offer and the current policy. G2A’s buyer guide also says Steam does not provide refunds for third-party keys bought from external sellers and directs buyers to the store where they purchased the key.
Keep marketplace purchases separate from gift-card requests
G2A’s safety article dated September 2, 2026 warns about people who ask you to buy a G2A gift card or voucher and send them its code to unlock an unrelated external service. That is not the same as completing a purchase on the G2A marketplace. Do not transfer a voucher code to an unrelated person or service on the promise that it will unlock something elsewhere.

When to choose another buying channel
If you want a more direct route to a game, consider buying through the game’s official store or publisher’s own sales channel where available. That does not make every marketplace listing illegitimate; it gives you a different purchasing route. The key distinction is that G2A’s marketplace controls and seller information can help inform a decision, but they are not independent, item-level proof of authenticity.
