G2A is a real digital marketplace, but that does not guarantee that every listed game key is authorized, correctly described, or certain to work. G2A says it verifies business sellers and uses fraud controls; its terms generally make the seller responsible for the item. A documented case confirms that illegitimate keys have reached the marketplace, but available evidence does not establish how often that happens today.
What “legit” means on G2A
There are two separate questions: whether G2A is an operating marketplace, and whether a particular seller’s key has legitimate provenance and will activate as described. G2A’s terms describe G2A.COM as a platform where sellers present offers and buyers purchase items. Unless an offer explicitly identifies G2A as the seller, the transaction is generally between the buyer and the third-party seller.

G2A says sellers are registered businesses that undergo verification, and that it uses seller screening and fraud controls. Those are the company’s descriptions of its processes; they do not independently establish the source or reliability of an individual key. G2A also says most marketplace keys come from business-verified wholesalers buying in bulk from developers and publishers. That, too, is a company sourcing claim rather than an independent audit.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
There is a documented example of illegitimate keys being sold through the marketplace. In 2020, G2A reported that its investigation found 198 Wube keys had been sold on G2A and announced a commitment to compensate developers for chargeback fees on proven illegitimate keys. The figure is G2A’s report about that specific case, not a measure of the marketplace’s overall rate of problematic listings.

In a 2019 statement, G2A proposed paying developers ten times their proven chargeback losses for keys obtained with stolen payment cards, subject to the proof and audit conditions it described. This was a historical company proposal, not a general guarantee to buyers or an independent estimate of how many listings were affected.
The available evidence does not establish a current, independently audited share of G2A listings that are invalid, stolen, revoked, or unauthorized. Individual cases, company statements, and anecdotes cannot be used to calculate that rate. A marketplace can include legitimate resale and still leave buyers exposed to seller-specific and provenance risks.

How to assess a G2A listing before buying
Check the item itself, not just the marketplace’s general claims. A working key can still be the wrong purchase if it is for a different platform, edition, or activation region than you need.
- Title and edition: Confirm the exact game, edition, and included content against the version you intend to play.
- Platform: Make sure the key is for the storefront or device you use. A PC key for one platform may not work on another.
- Region: Read activation and region restrictions carefully; a key may be valid but unavailable for activation in your country.
- Seller: Review the seller identity, history, and offer details. Seller verification at the marketplace level does not prove the origin of a particular key.
- Price and recourse: Compare the total checkout price and the current refund and dispute terms. A low price is not evidence of authorized provenance.
- Provenance: If authorization matters, compare the offer with the publisher’s store or a retailer whose current authorization you have verified.
G2A’s terms prohibit sellers from listing items that are invalid, expired, used, revoked, duplicated, unlawfully obtained, technically defective, or unable to activate as described. The terms also describe review and dispute tools. These rules and processes provide a route for addressing problems, but they do not guarantee that every dispute will result in a refund.

What to do if a key does not work
- Save the transaction details. Keep the order information and the listing details, including the stated title, platform, edition, and region.
- Record the error. Capture the activation message and note where and when you tried to redeem the key.
- Check for a mismatch. Compare the key’s platform, region, and version with your account and the listing before assuming the key is invalid.
- Use the order’s support route. G2A’s support hub lists help for nonworking or stopped-working digital items, wrong platform or region or version, seller contact, refunds, and Buyer Protection. Follow the current instructions for your order and raise the issue with the seller or through the available dispute process.
The outcome can depend on the particular transaction, seller, item, and applicable terms. The general terms do not establish one refund result for every buyer or situation.

If you want the clearest route to a game’s publisher or an authorized seller, buy directly from the publisher or verify that a retailer is currently authorized before purchasing. Compare the exact edition and platform, regional restrictions, total price, refund terms, and what recourse is available if a key is revoked. A marketplace seller’s verification status and a discounted price cannot, on their own, establish a key’s provenance.
