Cookie Clicker hides Easter eggs in achievement and upgrade names, flavor text, the news ticker, and occasional visual surprises. Many turn up during ordinary play rather than through a separate secrets menu. The examples below are documented by the community-maintained Cookie Clicker Wiki or, for one rare visual surprise, by creator Orteil; exact details can vary by game version.
Where to look for Easter eggs
Check achievement and upgrade titles and descriptions, read the news ticker, and pay attention to visual details around the cookie display. The community wiki’s references and Easter eggs page catalogs pop-culture allusions in names and flavor text, while its separate Easter eggs page covers hidden behaviors.
Examples of references in names and text
- “Praise The Sun”: The wiki identifies this achievement title as a reference to the video game Dark Souls.
- “Realm of the Mad God”: The wiki identifies this achievement title as a reference to the game of the same name.
- “War of the gods”: The upgrade description includes the line, “An interesting game; the only winning move is not to pray.” The wiki attributes it to the film Wargames.
- “Improbability drive”: The upgrade name and flavor text evoke The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, according to the wiki.
- News ticker: One item listed by the wiki references the viral “Double Rainbow” video.
These attributions are the wiki’s interpretations; the sources cited here do not show creator confirmation for each individual reference.
What happens if you name your bakery Orteil?
According to the community wiki’s FAQ, naming the bakery Orteil unlocks the shadow achievement God Complex and reduces cookies per second (CpS) by 1% until you change the bakery’s name. The FAQ also says the misspelling Ortiel causes a 2% CpS penalty but does not unlock the achievement. These are version-sensitive game mechanics documented by the wiki.

A rare surprise in the cookie display
Creator Orteil confirmed that a rare visual Easter egg uses a functionality originally imagined for small toys floating in the milk. In a 2020 Reddit AMA, he wrote: “while the marshmallows never made it in, i added a similar functionality as a very rare easter egg”. The comment confirms that the surprise exists, but does not describe its trigger or odds. Read the creator’s AMA.

There is no published total of Easter eggs established by the sources cited here. Achievement totals are not Easter-egg totals, and they are tied to specific versions and content rules. The wiki’s achievements page reports 622 normal achievements and 17 shadow achievements for version 2.058; it also excludes four achievements that can only be legitimately obtained by exporting an old Dungeons beta save. Those figures should not be treated as a current universal count across platforms.

Official Steam update notes show that secret content can change: the version 2.048 announcement from June 2, 2022 mentions three secret heavenly upgrades and says their unlocking rule changed in that update. It does not provide a current full list of Easter eggs.
