Usually not on upfront price alone. In the U.S. prices cited here, the ROG Ally X (2024) is listed at $799.99 and the ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) at $1,299.99. The console examples range from $499.99 for Nintendo Switch 2 to $899.99 for PS5 Pro or a limited-edition Xbox Series X. A handheld gaming PC may still be worth more to someone who values portable Windows gaming and access to multiple PC game libraries, but that flexibility is a reason to pay more—not proof of savings.
How do the listed prices compare?
These are U.S. manufacturer or platform prices surfaced in October 2026, not a complete market survey or a guarantee of current retail pricing. Sales, availability and official prices can change. Sony’s recommended U.S. prices took effect April 2, 2026; Nintendo’s Switch 2 MSRP revision took effect September 1, 2026. Xbox prices below are those displayed on its U.S. product page.

The lowest-priced example here is Switch 2, while the highest is the Ally X20. These devices are not direct hardware equivalents: Switch 2 is a hybrid console, PS5 and Xbox Series X are home consoles, and the ROG models are Windows handheld PCs. The figures answer an upfront-price question; they do not establish comparable performance, library size or lifetime cost.
When can a handheld gaming PC make financial sense?
You already own compatible PC games
ASUS describes the Ally X20 as a Windows 11 device compatible with multiple game libraries. If you already own games through PC stores, access to some of that library on a handheld may add value without requiring you to buy the same titles again. Compatibility varies by game and launcher, so do not assume every PC game will run or work equally well on the device. ASUS product information

You value portability and Windows flexibility
A handheld lets you play away from a TV and offers a Windows PC environment as well as gaming. Those capabilities may justify a higher purchase price for someone who will use them. They are differences in use and convenience, not evidence that the handheld costs less overall.
Your preferred games are available where you want to play
Before buying, check that the specific games you care about are available on the platform you choose and function as you expect. Console exclusives or a strong preference for a particular console ecosystem can outweigh the appeal of a PC library. Conversely, a buyer who mainly wants portable access to compatible PC games may value the handheld more than a home console.

What belongs in a real cost comparison?
Hardware price is only the first line of the budget. A useful comparison uses your own games, subscriptions and setup rather than treating one device price as the total cost.

The available price evidence does not establish a comparable game basket across these platforms.
- Existing library: Count only games you can access and play as intended on the device you choose; launcher and game compatibility can vary.
- Subscriptions: Decide whether you need a game catalog, online multiplayer, cloud streaming or other paid benefits. PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass have plans, but no stable, comparable U.S. subscription totals are established here. Check the current plan price and each game’s requirements before adding a dollar amount. PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass
- Storage and accessories: Treat expansion as optional and model-specific. Check the chosen device’s official specifications for its slot, supported media and capacity before budgeting for an accessory; an added card is not a universal requirement.
- Retail price and availability: Compare what you can actually buy today. Manufacturer prices and retail sale prices can differ, and a listed configuration may be unavailable or preorder-only.
There is no defensible universal break-even figure without choosing a region, exact configurations, ownership period, subscription assumptions, game basket, existing library and current retail prices. Build those assumptions around your own use rather than projecting the example prices onto every shopper.
