Start with Naruto, then continue to Naruto Shippuden and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations if you’re watching the anime. For manga, read Naruto before Boruto. The original series introduces the people and village that shape the sequel; Boruto follows Naruto’s son as he begins his own story.
What order should you watch Naruto and Boruto?
- Watch Naruto.
- Continue with Naruto Shippuden.
- Then watch Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.
This is the straightforward order for a first-time viewer, not a requirement to watch every film, filler arc, novel, or spin-off. Crunchyroll News’s 2024 beginner guide lists the same series order. It reports 220 episodes for the original Naruto anime alone—not the combined count for the franchise. Crunchyroll News’ watch-order guide

What order should you read the manga?
- Begin with Naruto, starting at volume 1.
- Read Boruto if you want to continue into the next-generation story.
VIZ lists the original Naruto manga through chapter 700 and catalogs Boruto separately. Its Boruto page credits Masashi Kishimoto with creation and supervision, Mikio Ikemoto with art, and Ukyo Kodachi with the script. VIZ’s Naruto manga catalog · VIZ’s Boruto manga catalog
Why start with Naruto?
Boruto is a sequel centered on Naruto’s son, so the original series gives you the character and setting context first. The official Boruto synopsis places Naruto in the role of Seventh Hokage and Boruto at the Ninja Academy as he begins his own journey. Official Boruto synopsis

Should you watch or read first?
| Choose | What suits it | Suggested order |
|---|---|---|
| Anime | Voice acting, music, and animated action; a longer viewing commitment | Naruto → Naruto Shippuden → Boruto |
| Manga | Reading at your own pace in the original panel format | Naruto → Boruto |
There’s no need to match formats one-to-one. You can finish the original Naruto story in anime or manga before moving to Boruto. Pick the format you’re more likely to stick with, and consider whether you want to experience the original protagonist’s full setup before starting the sequel.

Streaming catalogs vary by country, service, and dubbed or subtitled version, and can change. VIZ lists distribution partners including Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix, Pluto TV, TubiTV, VUDU, HBO Max, Roku, Peacock, YouTube, and Amazon Prime Video, but that list is not a guarantee that every series is available on every service in your location. Check your local catalog and preferred language version. The official Boruto site also notes that streaming services depend on region. VIZ streaming information
