No verified evidence shows that Marvel Rivals developers planted fake heroes as bait for leakers. The claim began as a dataminer allegation reported on January 24, 2025. In comments reported the following month, Marvel Games executive producer Danny Koo denied that the studio was trolling dataminers, while producer Weicong Wu said unused concepts and prototypes can remain in the game’s code.
Where the fake-hero claim came from
On January 24, 2025, Insider Gaming reported that dataminer and leaker Keone had claimed in a Marvel Rivals leak Discord channel that developers put characters in the files to catch leakers and possibly insiders. That report documented an allegation; it did not verify that the studio had planted any character entries as bait. Insider Gaming’s report
The report also quoted another dataminer, identified as a member of the X0X Leaking Team, cautioning that character listings in code do not confirm whether or when those characters will be released. A game-file entry can reflect work in progress without establishing a final roster decision.
What Marvel Rivals producers said
On February 17, 2025, PC Gamer reported comments from an IGN interview in which Marvel Games executive producer Danny Koo rejected the idea that the team was trolling dataminers: “No. We’d rather spend our time developing the actual game.” PC Gamer’s report

Producer Weicong Wu offered a development-related explanation for unused material appearing in code: “So there could be some information left in the code, and it might mean that we’ve tried those directions and they may appear or may not appear in our future plans.” In other words, leftover concepts or prototypes may be present without being either a deliberate trap or a promise of a future release.
What a character entry in the files can—and cannot—tell you
- It can suggest development work. A tag or other entry may reflect a concept, trial, or prototype that was left in the code.
- It does not prove a release is planned. Wu said such material may or may not fit future plans, and the dataminer cited by Insider Gaming warned that code listings do not establish whether or when a character will arrive.
- It does not prove a deliberate leak trap. The reviewed reporting does not establish that any specific hero entry was planted to catch leakers.
Marvel Games and NetEase described Marvel Rivals in their March 27, 2024 announcement as a team-based PvP shooter with an evolving Marvel roster and seasonal content. That broad description does not confirm any particular leaked character. Marvel Rivals announcement

What is confirmed, and what remains unconfirmed
The supported conclusion is narrow: the fake-hero theory was reported as a dataminer’s claim, and Koo later denied that the studio was trolling dataminers. Wu’s explanation makes leftover development material a plausible reason for unused entries, but neither statement identifies a specific file entry or proves how it got there. The reporting does not establish that any particular listed hero is fake, confirmed, or scheduled.
