Yes—but only in the hardware-performance sense. Recent MediaTek Dimensity chips, particularly the Dimensity 8400, 9300 and 9400 families, are now powerful enough to run a meaningful selection of Windows PC games locally on Android through Winlator-style compatibility layers. However, Snapdragon remains the safer choice for broad compatibility because Adreno has a more mature custom-driver ecosystem.
The practical verdict is simple: a recent Dimensity phone can be an excellent enthusiast machine for selected PC games, but it is not yet a universal Snapdragon replacement.
What “PC-game emulation” means here
Winlator is not a conventional console emulator such as Dolphin or PPSSPP. It combines Wine with Box86/Box64 to run Windows x86 and x64 applications on Android. Windows API calls are handled by Wine, PC processor instructions are translated for ARM, and graphics calls may pass through layers such as DXVK before reaching Vulkan.
That makes this a demanding software stack. A phone must handle x86-to-ARM translation, Windows compatibility, DirectX-to-Vulkan conversion, shader compilation and the game’s own CPU and GPU workload. Native Android games, cloud gaming and streaming through Steam Link or Moonlight do not test the same capabilities.

Why Dimensity has become viable
Several improvements arrived together rather than through one single breakthrough:
- More CPU performance: Recent Dimensity designs reduce the impact of translation overhead, especially in older or moderately demanding games.
- Stronger GPUs: The Dimensity 9300 and 9400 families use Immortalis graphics, while the Dimensity 8400 uses a much more capable Mali-G720-class GPU than lower-tier Dimensity phones.
- Better Vulkan paths: Recent Winlator releases have improved the options available on non-Adreno hardware.
- Community development: Mali-focused forks, renderer builds and per-game presets have made experimentation more practical.
Arm lists Vulkan 1.3 support for the Immortalis-G720 and Immortalis-G925. MediaTek also promotes Vulkan gaming and hardware ray tracing across its recent Immortalis-equipped platforms through HyperEngine. Those specifications help, but they do not guarantee that a particular Windows game will work correctly.
Which Dimensity chips actually matter?
“Dimensity” covers too many performance levels to be useful by itself. The GPU generation, cooling, RAM, firmware and driver revision matter more than the brand name.

An Immortalis-G925 flagship and a budget phone with a Mali-G57 should not be treated as evidence of the same capability. Core count, clock speed, cooling and the manufacturer’s Android graphics driver can materially change results even when two devices use related chips.
Winlator’s renderer problem
The largest remaining obstacle is not necessarily raw GPU speed. It is the driver and translation stack.

Snapdragon and Turnip
On supported Adreno GPUs, Turnip is the first renderer many Winlator users investigate. It is a widely used custom Vulkan driver for several Adreno 6xx and 7xx GPUs, and the surrounding community has accumulated a large library of known-good settings and fixes.
Dimensity, Mali and Immortalis
Turnip is not the normal solution for Mali or Immortalis hardware. These devices generally rely on Vortek, VirGL, WineD3D, DXVK variants or Mali-specific community builds. The choices are improving, but they are less uniform.
The official Winlator 11.1 release notes mention improvements to the experimental Vortek driver and changes affecting Mali devices. That is meaningful progress, but it does not amount to blanket Mali support. A renderer that works for one game, Android build and GPU may fail on another.

What games can run?
The most realistic targets are older 32-bit games, DirectX 8 and 9 titles, older Source-engine games, lightweight Unity releases and older racing, action, role-playing and strategy games. Games with modest shader complexity and limited asset streaming are generally better candidates.

Community reports have shown titles such as Mad Max and DmC: Devil May Cry running on Dimensity 8400 Ultra phones with Mali-G720 graphics through Mali-focused Winlator builds. These reports demonstrate possibility, not controlled benchmark performance. They also show why “runs” needs a precise definition: results can involve stutter, crashes, visual defects or game-specific workarounds.
More difficult targets include modern DX11 games with complex shaders, DX12 games requiring VKD3D-Pro, demanding Unreal Engine titles, large open-world games with heavy streaming, and software dependent on launchers, DRM, anti-cheat, codecs or online services. A community report about Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2012), for example, is useful evidence for that particular game and setup—not proof that every similar DX11 game will work.

Define “playable” before comparing phones
There are several very different milestones:
- Launching to the menu.
- Reaching actual gameplay.
- Displaying correct textures, lighting and effects.
- Maintaining stable frame times rather than briefly reaching a high frame rate.
- Working with sound, saves and a controller.
- Surviving a long session without severe throttling or crashes.
A phone may satisfy the first two and fail the rest. Mali devices can also show shader-compilation stutter, texture glitches and intermittent crashes even when average frame rates look acceptable. The Mad Max and DmC community tests illustrate both the progress and the remaining variability.
Why Snapdragon is still the safer purchase
Snapdragon’s advantage is primarily ecosystem maturity, not a guarantee that every Adreno device is faster.
- Driver availability: Turnip support gives many Adreno devices a well-known Vulkan path.
- Compatibility knowledge: More users have tested more games, producing more presets and troubleshooting advice.
- Fewer experiments: Buyers are more likely to find a working combination without trying several forks and renderer versions.
- Better coverage for common translation paths: Many Winlator configurations are built around DXVK and mature Adreno drivers.
That comparison still needs to be specific. Newer Adreno generations may not have mature Turnip support, and some Snapdragon devices may also need Vortek or another alternative. “Snapdragon always wins” is as misleading as “a new Dimensity automatically matches Snapdragon.” Compare the exact GPU, driver, Winlator build and target game.

Minimum requirements and a sensible setup
Requirements vary by Winlator build and game, but practical guidance commonly includes ARM64 hardware, Android 9 or newer, at least 6 GB of RAM for 3D games and Vulkan 1.1 or newer. Allow additional storage for the APK, Windows game files, containers and shader caches. See the setup guidance and download information for build-specific details.

- Download Winlator from the official GitHub releases page where possible.
- Install the APK and create a container.
- Begin at 720p or lower and use conservative graphics settings.
- On Adreno, investigate Turnip where supported. On Mali or Immortalis, use the renderer supplied or recommended by the relevant build; do not assume Turnip applies.
- Use legally obtained game files. Winlator does not provide commercial PC games.
- Test one game at a time and change only one variable—renderer, Wine version, DXVK version, resolution or Box64 preset—between tests.
- Record the working configuration, including phone model, SoC, RAM, Android version, Winlator build, renderer, game version and resolution.
Prefer official releases and verify the source of any community APK. Mali-focused forks can be valuable, but unofficial distribution adds maintenance and security risk.

If reducing resolution barely changes performance, the bottleneck may not be GPU fill rate. CPU translation, driver overhead, shader compilation, draw-call submission, asset streaming or a game-engine limitation can dominate instead. This is why a lower resolution cannot rescue every failing title.
Thermals matter too. A short gameplay clip may show the phone before it reaches its sustained temperature limit. A meaningful test should include a longer session and note frame-time stability, heat and throttling—not just the opening peak frame rate.
How to choose between Dimensity and Snapdragon
Choose recent Dimensity when:
- You want strong native Android gaming as well as local PC-game experimentation.
- You are considering a Dimensity 9300/9400-class or 8400-class device.
- Your target library is mainly older DX9, 32-bit or lightweight DX11 games.
- You are comfortable with per-game settings, renderer changes and community troubleshooting.
- Value or sustained native gaming performance matters more than maximum compatibility.
Choose Snapdragon when:
- Winlator is your primary buying criterion.
- You want the largest pool of established drivers, presets and fixes.
- You expect to try many unrelated PC games.
- You dislike sideloading and repeated troubleshooting.
- Your target games depend heavily on mature DXVK or VKD3D paths.
Do not buy based only on AnTuTu scores, ray-tracing claims, native Android benchmarks, RAM capacity, a single YouTube clip or the Dimensity product number. Check the exact phone and community reports for the games you actually intend to play.

What this means for current buyers
A phone such as the POCO X7 Pro is a useful example of the value-oriented Dimensity 8400 Ultra class, but its experience should not be generalized to every Dimensity device. Flagship Dimensity phones using 9300- or 9400-class hardware offer a stronger foundation, while regional model differences, firmware and cooling still matter.
Buy a controller before a cooler if touchscreen controls are your main limitation. A cooler may help sustained performance when testing proves thermal throttling, but it cannot repair a broken driver or make an incompatible game launch. Storage, hubs and other USB-C accessories improve convenience; they do not increase GPU compatibility.
Final verdict
MediaTek Dimensity has genuinely narrowed the hardware gap. Recent Immortalis and high-end Mali GPUs, combined with improving Vulkan and Winlator paths, make local Windows PC gaming on Android a credible use case rather than a curiosity.
But the software gap remains. Snapdragon is still the lower-risk recommendation for broad PC-game compatibility, stable frame times and fewer workarounds. Recent Dimensity is the better choice for an enthusiast who values performance per dollar and is willing to tune each game.
