Most older Nintendo DS and DS Lite game cards are region-free, so they generally work on DS-family systems from another region. The key exception is a DSi-exclusive card: Nintendo says games that work only on DSi or DSi XL—not on the original DS or DS Lite—are region-locked. Nintendo 3DS game cards follow a separate, region-locked rule.
Which Nintendo DS games are region-free?
Nintendo describes older Nintendo DS and DS Lite software as region-free and says most of it can be played on Nintendo DSi and DSi XL systems from any region. This covers standard DS game cards, not every type of software associated with the DS family. Nintendo also notes that future DS software could incorporate region encoding, so its general statement should not be treated as an absolute guarantee for every card.
For a particular game, check its compatibility markings or title-specific documentation. The relevant distinction is whether the card is a standard DS game or one that requires DSi features.
When does region locking matter?
DSi-exclusive game cards
Nintendo says cards compatible only with DSi or DSi XL, and not with the original DS or DS Lite, are region-locked. The exception is defined by exclusive compatibility—not simply by a card mentioning DSi. Check whether the game also runs on DS or DS Lite before assuming this rule applies. Nintendo’s international compatibility guidance explains the distinction.

Nintendo 3DS game cards
3DS software has its own region-locking rule: Nintendo says Nintendo 3DS family systems are region-locked. A 3DS game card cannot be played on a DS, DS Lite, DSi, or DSi XL. This is separate from the ability of 3DS-family systems to play many DS games.
Will a game from another country work on your console?
| Game card | DS or DS Lite | DSi or DSi XL | Nintendo 3DS family |
|---|---|---|---|
| Older standard DS card | Generally region-free | Nintendo says most older DS software works from any region | Most DS games work; a few with AGB-slot requirements do not |
| DSi-exclusive card | Not compatible | Region-locked | Region-locked; check the game’s specific compatibility and region |
| Nintendo 3DS card | Not compatible | Not compatible | Region-locked |
The table separates two questions: whether the console supports that kind of game card, and whether the region rules allow it. A card can be incompatible because of its system generation or hardware requirements, regardless of region.

Playing DS games on a Nintendo 3DS
Nintendo says Nintendo 3DS family systems can play DS games except for a few that require the AGB slot—the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot on earlier DS hardware. Some accessories that use that slot are likewise unsupported on later systems. See Nintendo’s DS-game compatibility guidance for 3DS family systems for the backward-compatibility caveat.
What about DSi Shop downloads?
DSi Shop downloads and related downloadable content are region-specific according to Nintendo. That rule concerns digital content; it does not change the general region-free guidance for most older DS game cards.

How to check a specific game
- Identify the card type. Determine whether it is a standard DS card, a DSi-exclusive card, or a Nintendo 3DS card. Do not infer the category from the console alone.
- Check console compatibility. A 3DS card requires a 3DS-family system; DS, DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL cannot play it. For a DS card on 3DS, check whether the title requires the AGB slot.
- Apply the region rule. Older standard DS software is generally region-free; DSi-exclusive and 3DS software have region restrictions.
- Confirm the individual title. Use its compatibility markings or title-specific documentation, especially if it is an unusual or later-release card.
Nintendo’s 3DS family region-lock guidance and 3DS card compatibility guidance address those separate rules.
