Yes. Minecraft has free community-made content, but the right kind depends on your edition: Java Edition uses third-party mods, while Bedrock Edition uses Add-Ons. Some Bedrock Add-Ons and customized worlds are free; Marketplace content can also be paid, so check the individual listing.
What “free mods” means in Minecraft
Players often use “mods” to mean any player-made change to Minecraft. The available route differs by edition. Java mods are third-party downloads that can add, remove, or change game content. Bedrock customization uses Add-Ons, including resource and behavior packs, which can change gameplay and how entities look or behave.

Minecraft’s creator materials say many free Bedrock Add-Ons and customized worlds are available. They do not say that every Marketplace item is free, or that every Add-On is available on every Bedrock platform. Check the chosen item’s price and platform instructions.

How to choose a Java mod safely
- Check the edition and game version. The mod must be made for Java Edition and the Minecraft version you plan to run.
- Check the loader. Follow the mod’s stated loader requirements; loaders are not interchangeable. CurseForge lists Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla among the Minecraft app’s supported game types or modloaders, but that does not mean a mod for one works with another.
- Check dependencies. Fabric’s player guide says most Fabric mods also require Fabric API. The mod’s own instructions should identify required libraries and where to obtain them.
- Use ordinary software precautions. Mojang says Java mods are not created, reviewed, or endorsed by Mojang, and advises taking the same precautions as with other independently developed software. A mod can make the game malfunction or become unplayable.
Fabric’s player guide covers version compatibility and Fabric API. CurseForge’s supported game types and modloaders lists the options supported by its Minecraft app.

How to find and install Bedrock Add-Ons
Use the Add-On’s own installation instructions for your platform. Microsoft’s guide explains importing and activating add-ons, while Minecraft’s creator page describes the kinds of gameplay customization they enable. Before choosing one, verify the listing’s price and confirm its platform instructions match your copy of Bedrock Edition.
Free Add-Ons and customized worlds exist, but Minecraft Marketplace also offers content for purchase. The price of one item does not establish the price of others.

What support to expect
For third-party Java mods, Mojang says modding is not officially supported and Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod use. If a mod causes a problem, consult its creator or the relevant community, and check the mod’s compatibility requirements before troubleshooting the game itself.
