Yes. Nintendo says Switch DLC works only with games released for the same region as the DLC. A game card may be region-free while its DLC is not compatible with that copy, so check the specific game’s supported regions before buying an add-on.
How Switch DLC region compatibility works
Nintendo’s rule is that DLC must match the game’s release region: “No, DLC will only work with games that are released for the same region as the DLC.” Nintendo Switch Regional Compatibility FAQ

This is separate from the rule for game cards. Nintendo says Switch game cards are not region-locked, except for consoles and game cards distributed in the Chinese region. That does not make DLC cross-region compatible: an imported card can run on a supported console, yet DLC from a different regional release may not work with it.
“Region” here refers to the release region supported by the game and DLC, not simply the country where you are currently using the console or the language displayed by the game. Nintendo recommends checking the title’s Support Information for its supported regions.

Check whether DLC matches your game
For physical software, Nintendo’s general check is available on the console:
- Highlight the game on the HOME Menu.
- Press + or −.
- Select Software Information, then Support Information.
- Check the supported regions shown for the game.
Then identify the country or region associated with the Nintendo Account used to buy the DLC. Compare the DLC’s release region with the game’s supported regions. Do not infer compatibility just from the console’s country, the game’s language, or the fact that the card launches. The title’s support information and the region of the DLC are the relevant comparison.
How your Nintendo Account country affects purchases
The eShop country is based on the country setting for the Nintendo Account. Nintendo says that changing the account country changes the eShop country the next time the account connects to the eShop. Nintendo also says eShop cards work only in the country or region for which they were intended. A card bought for a different region cannot be replaced, exchanged, or refunded under the stated policy. These account and card rules affect how purchases are made; they do not override the same-region requirement for DLC and game software.
