Sometimes—but Secret Lair is a product line, not a format-legality category. A Secret Lair card’s legality depends on the exact card and the format you want to play. Its alternate art or crossover branding alone does not make it legal or illegal.
How to check a Secret Lair card’s legality
- Identify the exact card. Use its printed name and, if it has one, its interchangeable-name marking to find its official card entry.
- Choose the format. Commander, Modern, Standard, Legacy, Vintage, and Pauper each have their own rules and card lists.
- Check the card’s markings and product-specific notes. An acorn stamp or an older silver border is especially important; some sets also have different rules for cards of different rarities.
- Check the current format legality and banned list. A card may be legal in one format and not another. For Commander, consult the current Commander rules and banned list as well as the card’s official entry.
- Separate tournament legality from table permission. A casual group can agree to allow a card that is not legal under the format’s rules, but that agreement does not change its official legality.
Wizards’ October 25, 2024 Universes Beyond announcement and its Unfinity guidance describe different rules for different products and card categories. They do not provide a single legality rule for every Secret Lair card.
Are Secret Lair cards legal in Commander?
There is no blanket yes or no. Check the card itself against Commander’s current rules and banned list. In particular, Wizards says acorn-stamped cards are not legal in Commander under the Unfinity guidance. That guidance also treats earlier silver-bordered cards as Un- cards. A group may choose to allow one in a casual game, but that is a house agreement rather than official Commander legality.
Other Secret Lair cards may be legal in Commander if the card’s rules identity and current format status allow it. The Secret Lair label, alternate art, or crossover subject does not decide the question.

What do acorn and oval stamps mean?
Wizards’ September 19, 2022 Unfinity article explains the distinction between acorn-marked Un- cards and cards intended for Eternal formats. Mark Rosewater, Wizards’ Head Designer, wrote: “What an acorn security stamp means is exactly what a silver border used to.”
- Acorn stamp: The card is not legal in Commander or Standard under the Unfinity guidance. Wizards describes these cards as intended for casual formats where all players agree to include them.
- Oval stamp, or a qualifying card without a stamp: Wizards classifies these Unfinity cards as Eternal. The release notes specifically list Commander, Legacy, and Vintage for Unfinity Eternal cards.
- Common Unfinity cards: Wizards’ release notes also list these as Pauper-legal.
These are Unfinity-specific examples, not a universal rule for every Secret Lair or every set. Do not infer legality from a stamp without checking the exact card and format.

Do Universes Beyond Secret Lair cards work differently?
Wizards announced a forward-looking policy on October 25, 2024: new Universes Beyond booster sets releasing from 2025 onward would be legal in all major Constructed formats. The announcement does not change the legality of existing sets, and it distinguishes booster sets from associated supplemental products, including Commander decks and Jumpstart cards, which may have different legality. Reprints follow the formats in which the card is already legal. Read the full announcement for the policy’s scope.
This policy is about the products and release window it names; it does not mean every Universes Beyond card, or every card sold through Secret Lair, is legal in every format. Check the individual card’s current record and the rules for your format.

Do alternate Secret Lair versions count as different cards?
Different artwork or a crossover treatment does not by itself create another deck slot. Wizards’ June 7, 2021 Secret Lair Universes Beyond announcement described plans to give mechanically unique cards in the product line in-Magic versions and said the versions would count as equivalent game pieces. Treat that as a historical policy statement, not a guarantee about current product availability.
Wizards’ April 20, 2022 Comprehensive Rules update says cards with interchangeable names count as the same name for deck construction, format legality, and game rules. When a Secret Lair card has an alternate or interchangeable name, verify its current Oracle identity and official card entry; the name relationship can matter for legality and deck construction.

What to compare when choosing between versions
If you are deciding whether to use a Secret Lair version or another printing, check these separately:
- Rules identity and Oracle text: Confirm the card’s current official name and rules text.
- Format status: Check legality and any banned-list entry for your chosen format.
- Deck construction: Check whether interchangeable-name versions count as the same card for the format.
- Physical presentation: Art, frame, and crossover branding affect appearance and collecting, not legality unless a specific rule or marking says otherwise.
Why the exact card and format matter
Secret Lair includes reprints and mechanically distinct cards, while format rules and product policies can vary. For example, an Unfinity acorn stamp has a different consequence from an Eternal Unfinity card, and the Universes Beyond policy announced in 2024 applies prospectively to new booster sets releasing from 2025—not retroactively to existing sets. No single list or product label settles every case. Verify the exact card and current format record before building a deck or entering an event.
