Are Vampire Games on Steam a Recession Indicator? What the Charts Really Show

PC Gamer counted a sharp rise in vampire-focused Steam games, but the charts track a small, manually classified slice of releases—not a proven recession predictor.

No—not on the evidence presented. PC Gamer’s October 8, 2026 feature finds that vampire-focused Steam releases have grown in number and as a share of launches, but it does not show that they predict recessions. Its “Vampire Menace Rating” is a playful, subjective chart, not a validated economic indicator.

What the Steam charts show

PC Gamer writer Lincoln Carpenter reports that four vampire games were released on Steam in 2016, compared with 65 so far in 2026 when his feature was published on October 8. The 2026 figure is year-to-date, and the article notes that more releases were scheduled before the end of the year; it is not a final annual total. Carpenter also reports that the highest quarterly count rose from six launches in 2020 to 24 in 2026. PC Gamer’s feature presents these as counts under its own classification.

Those raw totals are only part of the picture. Steam’s overall annual game launches, as reported in the feature, increased from 9,634 in 2020 to 21,263 in 2025. Carpenter says that properly vampire-centered games made up less than one in 100 Steam games by his definition, although some recent quarterly shares were more than twice the level at the start of the decade. The growing share is more informative than the rising count alone, but remains a very small slice of Steam releases and fluctuates from quarter to quarter.

How PC Gamer counted vampire games

Carpenter manually reviewed 1,213 games carrying Steam’s user-defined “Vampires” tag. He recorded their release dates and the dates they first appeared in SteamDB’s archive, then judged whether vampires were central to each game or merely incidental. Steam’s tag can be applied by users, so it includes games that are not principally about vampires. Carpenter also notes that before “bullet heaven” became a distinct genre label, some games in the style popularized by Vampire Survivors used the Vampires tag for discoverability.

#1 Best Overall
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 - Xbox Series X
  • You are the Nomad — an elder vampire awakening from a century-long slumber, new to the modern nights. Trapped in your Blood is a stranger’s voice. This entity, a vampire detective known as Fabien, will be your guide to 21st-century Seattle. You will explore the city through his eyes as well as those of the Nomad, as you revisit a cold case from a hundred years ago that is threatening undead and mortal society alike.
  • Hunt your way through a modern-night Seattle on the brink of an open supernatural war in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, where visceral vampire action meets a neo-noir murder mystery.
  • Navigate the vampire Court of Seattle and its dark underbelly in this action RPG, realized by the BAFTA award-winning studio The Chinese Room.
  • Enter the World of Darkness and rise through vampire society or rail against it. Experience Seattle - a city full of alluring, dangerous characters and factions, not to mention the mortals at stake in the clash of powers beyond their knowing. In this sequel to the cult classic, your choices, plots, and schemes will determine the balance of power and what becomes of the city and its people.

The classification is inherently subjective: the feature says that Resident Evil Village was missed despite its prominent vampire character. And a SteamDB archive’s first appearance is only a proxy for when a game listing appeared; it does not establish when development began. The resulting dataset is a manual estimate, not an official, fully reproducible Steam series.

One concrete example of a clearly vampire-centered game is V Rising. Steam describes it as a vampire survival action RPG, lists Stunlock Studios as developer and publisher, and gives May 8, 2024 as its release date. That confirms the game’s identity and date, not any particular count in Carpenter’s dataset.

Why the charts do not prove a recession signal

The feature places the release trend alongside indicators of household financial pressure. It reports that US median household income rose about 4.6% in real terms from 2020 to 2025, while CPI rose roughly 27–29% from the start of 2020 to the article’s publication period, depending on whether food and energy are included. It also describes rising credit-card delinquency, a falling personal savings rate, and an increase in the Producer Price Index for wholesale trade industries. These are the feature’s descriptions of economic trends, not evidence that vampire games caused or forecast them.

A recession is not simply a period when households feel squeezed. The National Bureau of Economic Research’s traditional definition is “a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and that lasts more than a few months.” Its Business Cycle Dating Committee considers depth, diffusion, and duration across a range of broad indicators, and dates turning points retrospectively once sufficient data are available. • In Coteries of New York, you will rediscover New York from the perspective of a newborn vampire, caught between the power struggles of two vampire clans: Camarilla and Anarchs.
  • Fight to preserve the vestiges of your humanity while you try to control your desire to feed or the Beast that beats inside; you will end up taking control.
  • Shadows of New York is a completely independent adventure in which you will play a member of the clan Lasombra, who is in charge of investigating the death of the New York Anarchs leader.

Carpenter’s feature does not report a statistical test of predictive power, a causal explanation, a lead-lag analysis, or a comparison with official recession dates. A rising cultural trend and economic stress appearing over overlapping periods are not enough to show that one predicts the other. The article’s own “Vampire Menace Rating”—quarterly vampire-game appearances in the SteamDB archive divided by quarterly total Steam launches—is best read as an entertaining way to visualize a niche genre’s changing footprint, not a measure of recession risk.

How to read the headline

  • As a games-trend observation: the feature reports more vampire-focused releases and a higher share of launches than at the start of the period it examines.
  • As an economic claim: the charts do not establish that vampire games lead, cause, or reliably accompany recessions.
  • As a measurement: the count depends on a manually reviewed user tag, subjective inclusion choices, and archive appearances used as listing-date proxies.

Carpenter’s own warning captures the joke: “Nothing is scarier during Halloween season than amateur statistics.”
