Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Risk of Rain 2: Hallowed Concepts launched on October 8, 2026, as paid downloadable content for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It requires the base game, Risk of Rain 2. The expansion adds two Survivors, new stages, Trials, enemies, bosses, and two new item systems. Shared-lobby access works differently from owning the content yourself, and the sections below explain where that distinction matters.
Is Hallowed Concepts out now, and where can you buy it?
Yes. The expansion went live on October 8, 2026. The Steam store page for Risk of Rain 2: Hallowed Concepts lists it as requiring Risk of Rain 2, and the Xbox store page for Hallowed Concepts for Xbox Series X|S carries the same launch date. The publisher’s October 8, 2026 patch notes name PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms.

Yes. Hallowed Concepts is an expansion, not a standalone game. Steam lists Risk of Rain 2 as a requirement, so you need the base game installed and on your account before the expansion’s content becomes available to you.

#1 Best Overall
- Co-op Roguelike action
- Constant battles and incredible bosses
- Old favorites return and undiscovered challenges await
What the expansion adds
The publisher’s patch notes give the following counts for the paid expansion. They are the publisher’s own tallies, not independent gameplay testing.
- Two new Survivors. Enforcer is unlocked by default. Acolyte must be unlocked.
- The N’Tormat Curio. A new item listed in the notes.
- Three new enemies and three new bosses.
- Three standard stages, plus several Trial stages.
- Six interactables, including the Wake stage event.
- Two new item types: 14 Hexes and 11 Hallowed Items.
- Three standard items.
- Survivor skins and new music.
Trials
Trials are pocket realms with their own objectives and rewards, according to the developer’s announcements in the Risk of Rain Team’s Steam Community announcements. They are the expansion’s separate challenge stages, distinct from the standard stages above.
Rank #2
- Co-op Roguelike action
- Constant battles and incredible bosses
- Old favorites return and undiscovered challenges await
Hexes and Hallowed Items
Hexes impose negative effects. Hallowed Items are the reward path that corresponds to them. The developer describes the pairing as a challenge-and-reward loop: a Hex makes a run harder, and the matching Hallowed Item is what you get for dealing with it. The announcements describe the system in general terms, so the exact trade-off of individual Hexes is best checked in-game.
Paid expansion versus the free update
The same update that shipped the expansion also changed the base game. The publisher’s notes list these changes separately, so keep them apart when you describe what you are buying.

- Procedurally-generated planets with terrain that can be reshaped under your feet as though it were made of clay. Survive on and explore carefully crafted planets that can be entirely deformed and traversed.
- Extract resources, trade or craft new tools, vehicles, and modules. Snap together components and objects to build bases, rovers, and spaceships to travel to new planets and moons.
- Play with friends in 4 player online drop-in/drop-out co-op
- Discover and uncover the mysteries of the solar system.
| Item | Paid Hallowed Concepts DLC | Free update, same date |
|---|---|---|
| New Survivors | Two (Enforcer and Acolyte) | Skills added for six original Survivors |
| Stages, enemies, bosses | Three standard stages, several Trial stages, three enemies, three bosses | Not listed as part of the update |
| Items | 14 Hexes, 11 Hallowed Items, three standard items, N’Tormat Curio | Not listed as part of the update |
| Difficulty option | Not applicable | An optional Karma system that can make the final moon confrontation more challenging |
The free changes apply to the base game and are not paid DLC features. Buying Hallowed Concepts does not unlock the skill changes for the six original Survivors, and you do not need to own the expansion to get them.
Playing with friends when only one person owns it
This is where ownership matters most. Xbox’s store page says that one player in a lobby must own Hallowed Concepts for its monsters, levels, and items to appear for everyone in that lobby. Players who do not own the expansion can join, but they cannot select its new Survivors, and they cannot permanently unlock its new items, logbooks, or other content.
Rank #4
- Co-op Roguelike action
- Constant battles and incredible bosses
- Old favorites return and undiscovered challenges await
In practice, one owner can open the expansion’s content to a group for a session, but everyone else does not gain the permanent unlocks. If you want to keep the Survivors and unlocks, each player needs their own copy.
The Xbox rule is documented only on the Xbox store page. The sources reviewed for this article do not describe how shared lobbies work on PC or PlayStation 5, so check those platforms’ store pages or in-game messages before planning a group session there.

Quick decision guide
- You already own Risk of Rain 2 and want the new content for yourself: buy Hallowed Concepts on your platform, then check the regional price in your storefront.
- You want to play with a friend who owns the expansion: you can join their lobby on Xbox to see the expansion’s monsters, levels, and items, but you cannot choose the new Survivors or keep the unlocks.
- You do not own the base game: buy Risk of Rain 2 first, because the expansion will not run without it.
Hallowed Concepts is the most significant paid update for Risk of Rain 2 since the base game’s launch in terms of content counts, but this article does not include independent gameplay testing or a review verdict. Check reviews from players and critics before deciding whether the Trial and Hex systems suit you.
Hallowed Concepts reached release on October 8, 2026. Read the publisher’s patch notes first if you want the complete list of changes before you buy.
