War Thunder maps can be inspired by real places, but they are not generally exact recreations. The developer says designers may draw on one location or combine several, then adapt or build the map around cover, route choices, visual identity, and gameplay. “Realistic Battles” describes aspects of battle and vehicle mechanics; it does not guarantee that a map faithfully reproduces real geography or history.
Are War Thunder maps based on real places?
Some are inspired by real locations or historical settings. In an official Q&A about map selection, the developer cites Vietnam and Berlin as places associated with historical battles, and Vyborg Bay as a setting selected for its distinct visuals. The same answer says a new map should also offer a new gameplay experience. War Thunder/DMM Games’ map-design Q&A is the clearest source for the studio’s stated approach.
That does not mean every map is a faithful copy of a real battlefield. The developer says maps are often inspired by a real place or a combination of places, then designed from scratch rather than reproduced exactly as they are or were. The stated reason is practical: a literal recreation may not provide an interesting play space.
Why are maps changed from real locations?
The developer describes map design as a balance between a setting’s identity and the needs of play. Designers consider cover and different routes, while aiming to make each new map feel distinct. As a result, terrain, roads, waterways, built-up areas, or scale may not match a real counterpart exactly; the Q&A does not provide a map-by-map account of those changes.

Its concise design principle is: “When adding a new map, it is important to also provide a new gameplay experience.” This is an official answer translated from Japanese, but the source excerpt does not clearly attribute that particular sentence to a named speaker.
Does Realistic Battles mean realistic maps?
No. The official Realistic Battles guide describes a mode with vehicle handling and battle rules intended to be closer to real prototypes than Arcade Battles, while still retaining simplifications compared with Simulator. Its discussion of vehicle mobility, maneuverability, and limited enemy markers concerns gameplay mechanics—not whether the maps match historical geography.

- Slide molded turret and upper hull parts give an unbeatable combination of hassle-free assembly and highly realistic detail levels. Cast metal turret and welded hull surface textures are rendered accurately.
- The rear showcases sharp, detailed molding on engine grilles and exhausts, as well as the numerous accessories depicted by the kit.
- Clear parts are used to recreate light lens and cupola vision block parts, further upping the realism of this kit.
- The single-pin T66 tracks are recreated with minimum fuss and great accuracy, by the included belt-type tracks. Drive sprockets feature fine holes.
- A commander figure in realistic pose is provided for the cupola. The periscope seen on the hatch underside is depicted using separate parts.
Likewise, CEO Anton Yudintsev has discussed War Thunder’s realism in physics and damage modelling alongside gameplay limits. That broad description does not establish map accuracy; the developer’s map-specific explanation is more relevant to this question. The CEO Q&A addresses those broader aspects of the game.
How to assess a specific map
The developer’s general policy cannot determine how closely any individual map resembles its inspiration. To evaluate a particular map, separate four questions:

The available developer guidance does not include a map-by-map audit against historical maps or geographic data. It also gives no verified percentage of maps based on real places, so neither an accuracy score nor a share of “real” maps can be stated from these sources.

Some players question whether Ground Realistic maps give vehicles enough room for longer-range combat. For example, a player raised that concern in a post on the official War Thunder forum on December 5, 2024. That post documents one player’s view; it does not measure map size, establish how common the complaint is, or represent an official finding.
