How Do I Send Files to My Xbox?

Xbox has different transfer methods for games, captures, saves, and personal media. Here’s which route to use—and what cannot be copied into console storage.

The right way to send something to an Xbox depends on what it is. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S do not provide a general file browser for dragging arbitrary files from a PC into the console’s internal storage. Use network transfer for games and apps between consoles, the Xbox app or OneDrive for captures, and OneDrive or USB for personal media. Documents and other files can usually be stored in OneDrive, but that does not copy them into Xbox storage.

Choose a transfer method by file type

What you want to move or access Use this method What it does
A game or app between Xbox consoles Xbox network game transfer or an external drive Moves installed game or app data; it does not transfer a license.
A screenshot or game clip from Xbox Xbox mobile app, OneDrive, or supported external storage Shares or backs up captures; it is not a general file manager.
A photo, video, or music file from a PC or phone OneDrive or USB playback Lets the Xbox access the file if the app and media format are supported.
A save game Xbox cloud synchronization or the game’s own transfer system Synchronizes supported save data; manual USB copying is not the normal route.
A PDF, ZIP, installer, or miscellaneous file Keep it in OneDrive or use a suitable device or app Does not provide a normal way to copy the file into Xbox internal storage.

Move games and apps between Xbox consoles

Use network game transfer

Xbox network transfer is for copying installed games and apps from one Xbox console to another—not for sending arbitrary PC files. Microsoft’s network game transfer instructions cover the feature. The consoles need to be on the same local network; Ethernet is often a more reliable choice than Wi-Fi for large transfers.

  1. Connect both consoles to the same home network.
  2. On the source console, open the network-transfer area in Settings and enable Allow network game transfer or the equivalent option shown by your system software.
  3. On the destination console, open the same area and select the source Xbox.
  4. Choose the games or apps to copy, then start the transfer.
  5. Keep both consoles on and connected as required by the on-screen instructions.

Menu wording can vary by system update. If the source console or games do not appear, check that both consoles are online on the same local network, the game is installed on the source, and the destination has enough free space. See Microsoft’s network-transfer troubleshooting guide for further checks.

Copying installed data does not grant a new license. To play, the destination still needs the relevant account entitlement, disc, or subscription access, and may still need to download updates or meet other game requirements.

Use an external drive carefully

An external USB drive can be used for Xbox storage, including games, but the console may ask you to configure or format it for a particular purpose. Formatting can erase existing files, and a drive configured for Xbox games may not work as ordinary PC storage until reformatted. Back up anything important before accepting a format prompt, and follow the console’s current storage instructions. Microsoft’s USB port and storage guidance explains supported uses.

Send screenshots and game clips

Share a capture with the Xbox mobile app

The Xbox mobile app can show and share game captures from your console. Install the app on an iOS or Android phone, sign in with the Microsoft account used on Xbox, open the captures area, select a screenshot or clip, and choose the available share or save option. The app supports sharing to Xbox chat and supported external services. Its listed minimum requirements are iOS 15.1 or later and Android 8.0 or later; check the official Xbox app page for current compatibility and features.

Back up captures to OneDrive or external storage

For a copy you can keep outside Xbox network storage, use the capture backup option when available. Xbox’s September 27, 2023 announcement described the path My games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures and warned that captures stored on the Xbox network would be deleted after 90 days. Menu names may have changed since then; open the Captures app and look for its OneDrive or external-storage upload option. The retention policy applies to captures stored on the Xbox network, not to separate copies already saved to OneDrive or a drive. See the Xbox capture and storage announcement.

  2. Select the screenshot or clip and choose the OneDrive upload option if it is shown.
  3. Sign in or link the Microsoft account if prompted.
  4. Later, open OneDrive on a phone or computer to view or download the saved capture.

Access photos, videos, and music from a PC or phone

Use OneDrive as a cross-device bridge

Upload the file to OneDrive from a PC or phone, then open the OneDrive app on Xbox if it is available for your console and region. Sign in with the same account and browse to the file. Microsoft documents OneDrive storage for documents, photos, videos, music, and other file types, along with upload options such as Upload > Files and Upload > Folder, in its OneDrive device guidance.

OneDrive stores and provides access to a file; it does not guarantee that an Xbox app can play or preview it. Playback depends on the app, codec, container, resolution, and any DRM restrictions. Microsoft notes that HEIF and HEVC media can be stored in OneDrive, while opening those files on non-Apple devices may require compatible software; see its HEIF and HEVC guidance.

Use USB for local media playback

  1. Copy the media files to a USB drive on your computer and safely eject it.
  2. Connect the drive to the Xbox.
  3. Open Media Player or another compatible media app, browse the drive, and select a file.

This is a playback or access route, not a promise that Xbox will copy the files into its internal storage. Support depends on the console, app version, file system, codec, container, resolution, and DRM status. Xbox introduced USB playback through its Media Player app in 2014, but that announcement is not a current exhaustive compatibility list: Xbox Media Player announcement.

Documents and other arbitrary files

For a PDF, ZIP archive, installer, or miscellaneous file, there is no normal Xbox workflow equivalent to Windows File Explorer’s copy-and-paste into internal storage. OneDrive can keep the file, and an Xbox browser or app might access some file types, but that is not the same as copying them onto the console. Do not expect an installer or unknown file to become usable merely because it is stored on USB or in OneDrive. A PC, phone, or tablet is usually the better device for managing documents.

Transfer save data to another Xbox

Modern Xbox save data is generally synchronized through the Xbox network when the console is online, though behavior can differ by game and account state. Before switching consoles, connect the source Xbox to the internet, launch the game, and allow it to finish syncing. Then sign in to the destination Xbox with the same account and launch the game so it can retrieve supported cloud data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that copying a game installation also copies its save, or that a save can be moved manually from a PC with USB. If a save is important and the source has been offline, avoid deleting local data or resetting the old console until you have confirmed the save is available on the destination or through the game’s supported transfer method.

Troubleshoot common transfer problems

The Xbox cannot see a USB drive

  • Test that the drive works on a computer and is connected securely.
  • Check whether it was configured for games, captures, or ordinary media; those uses are not interchangeable.
  • Back up the drive before formatting or changing its configuration.
  • Try a drive and file system supported for the intended use, then reopen the relevant storage or media app.

A OneDrive file appears but will not play

  • Check the file on a PC to rule out corruption.
  • Consider codec, container, DRM, or HEIF/HEVC compatibility rather than relying only on the filename extension.
  • Try USB playback in a compatible media app, or use a suitable media-streaming app if playback—not cloud storage—is the goal.

An old capture is missing

Check the Captures app, the Xbox capture folder in OneDrive, the Xbox mobile app, and any external storage you previously used. Xbox’s 90-day notice concerned captures stored on the Xbox network; a capture not backed up elsewhere may no longer be available there.

Network transfer is unavailable or slow

  • Confirm both consoles are on the same local network and network game transfer is enabled on the source.
  • Make sure the title is installed on the source and the destination has adequate free space.
  • Install available system updates and try Ethernet if Wi-Fi is slow or unstable.
  • Use Microsoft’s transfer troubleshooting steps if the source console remains unavailable.

If you have an Xbox 360

These directions are for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox 360 has different storage, USB, media, and licensing behavior, so do not assume the modern console paths or transfer options apply. Check instructions specific to your Xbox 360 model and the type of content you are moving.
