The available official descriptions establish its premise, features, platforms, and editions—but not whether its combat or level design is “well-done.” Without hands-on play or an attributable review, that judgment would be premature.
What is Ariana and the Elder Codex?
Idea Factory International describes Ariana and the Elder Codex as a side-scrolling action platformer. Ariana is a Librarian who can enter Codices—books whose contents have been altered. Her task is to repair the Seven Hero Codices and restore magic to the world. The publisher’s synopsis gives her another motivation as well: finding the parents who disappeared when she was a child. Idea Factory International’s official game page presents both goals as part of the story.
The publisher lists the game for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. It describes a combination of platforming, combat, swordplay, and magic, but those feature descriptions do not establish how responsive, varied, or challenging the game feels in practice.
How do combat and progression work?
Official descriptions say Ariana can fight with a sword and magic, including charged slashes and mid-air combos. Defeating enemies and exploring can unlock spells and abilities; some new abilities open routes that were previously inaccessible. Nintendo’s listing specifies more than 30 unlockable spells and abilities, assigned across six slots. Those are publisher-provided counts, not evidence that every option is distinct or useful.

The game also includes Repair Points, which combine platforming and combat challenges. Nintendo says completing them quickly can earn permanent HP boosts and other rewards. The publisher also describes bosses and craftable, equippable Magic Items that alter stats or provide buffs. These details outline the progression systems, but do not establish the difficulty of the challenges or whether building a loadout creates meaningful choices.
To assess the action itself, the important questions are how well sword and magic attacks fit together, whether platforming and combat complement one another, and how clearly bosses communicate their attacks. Exploration also depends on whether returning to newly reachable areas feels rewarding rather than routine. The official feature lists cannot answer those play-experience questions.

Is it a metroidvania?
The publisher’s stated genre is “side-scrolling action platformer,” not metroidvania. The advertised ability-gated routes and revisitable areas overlap with traits commonly associated with metroidvanias, but that alone does not settle the label. A confident classification would require evidence about the game’s map, exploration structure, backtracking, and how consistently abilities open meaningful routes.
Platforms and release dates
According to Idea Factory International’s release information, the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch versions launched on March 24, 2026. The Steam version is listed for April 29, 2026. Store availability, regional listings, and current prices can change, so check the relevant storefront for current purchase details.

Nintendo’s listing gives a 1.2 GB file size, American English, and says Switch 2 behavior is supported and consistent with Nintendo Switch. These are storefront specifications, not performance testing on either console.

Yes, as an option rather than a requirement. Steam lists full controller support, including Xbox and PlayStation controllers, and recommends playing with a controller. That recommendation does not mean keyboard play is impossible, and no particular controller model is required by the cited information.

What do players and critics say?
A Steam listing snapshot showed 64% positive from 68 all-time user reviews and labeled the reception “Mixed.” That is a changeable, dated storefront figure—not a critic score, a platform-wide consensus, or a reliable substitute for assessing the game firsthand.
The same Steam page displays short critic excerpts attributed to Noisy Pixel (85/100), The Outerhaven (90/100), and Game8 (84/100). The listing does not identify individual reviewers. Those excerpts and scores should be read in their original review context rather than treated as a complete critical consensus.
Should you buy it?
The official information makes the game’s premise and advertised systems clear: a story about repairing magical books, with sword-and-spell action, ability unlocks, Repair Point challenges, and platform-specific digital extras. It does not establish the moment-to-moment quality of the combat, platforming, bosses, exploration, or performance. If those qualities are decisive for you, consult a hands-on review or try the Steam demo where available; feature lists alone cannot support a verdict that the action is well-done.
