ARK: Aquatica launched on July 15, 2025, for ARK: Survival Evolved. A pre-release post from Studio Wildcard set the release time at 10 a.m. Pacific for the DLC and game servers. The paid expansion drew controversy before launch over an AI-animated promotional trailer; that dispute concerned marketing, not a confirmed use of AI in the game’s development.
When did ARK: Aquatica release?
Studio Wildcard’s July 9, 2025 announcement set the release date as July 15, 2025. A follow-up post on July 14 specified 10 a.m. Pacific for the DLC and game servers. The announcement identified Aquatica as an expansion for ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE), not ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA). Read the release announcement and the pre-release details.

What is included in Aquatica?
The publisher described the expansion as ARK’s first move into a deep-sea setting: a sunken ARK surrounded by an underwater ecosystem. Its July 2025 announcement promoted five deep-sea biomes and 21 new aquatic creatures, alongside hazards such as pressure, currents, shifting environments, limited oxygen, and changes in buoyancy. These are the publisher’s descriptions of the planned content, not an independent assessment of the finished expansion.
Why was the DLC controversial?
The dispute centered on Aquatica’s promotional trailer. In a March 23, 2025 report, PC Gamer described backlash to an AI-animated marketing video and reported that Studio Wildcard said Aquatica was being developed by Snail Games USA Colorado. The publication quoted Snail Games lead designer Matt Kohl explaining that marketing staff had animated still images of development assets without the development team’s knowledge. PC Gamer’s report also attributed to Kohl the statement that AI tools were not used to develop the game; that is a reported developer claim, not independently verified production evidence.

“The marketing department used still images of some of our assets to create an AI-animated trailer. That was not part of the development team; we did not know that they were doing it.”
After the July 15 update, the publisher posted a July 16 notice apologizing for problems affecting both ASE and Aquatica. It made a public “preaquatica” branch available for clients and dedicated servers, based on the build from before the update, and said it would work on fixing mods in the main branch. The notice documents the response at launch; it does not establish the present status of that branch or mod compatibility.

What did Aquatica cost at launch?
The July 2025 announcement listed a $14.99 base price and an $8.99 introductory price, advertised as 40% off for a limited time. Those are historical launch prices, not a quote for the DLC today. Check the official Steam listing for current availability and pricing.
What should players know about servers and mods?
At launch, the publisher said official-server support would run through the end of 2025, with a possible extension, and described that support as limited to the Aquatica map. This was a forward-looking statement made in July 2025; it does not confirm whether those servers are operating now.

The same pre-release post warned that updated memory and shader systems might mean some mods needed recompiling, with a new DevKit to follow. The publisher’s next-day notice then described a temporary pre-Aquatica branch and planned mod fixes in the main branch. Because both statements concern launch conditions, check current game and mod information before switching versions or relying on an older setup.

Aquatica was announced for ARK: Survival Evolved. Players should not assume that owning or playing ARK: Survival Ascended includes this DLC. For a server or modded setup, confirm the game version and branch used by every player and by the server before changing builds. The July 16 announcement said the pre-Aquatica branch was available for both game clients and dedicated servers, but does not verify that it remains available today.
