Konami describes Contra: Rogue Corps as a twin-stick, third-person action game. Instead of moving through a side-scrolling stage, players take missions in the Damned City, shooting enemies while gathering resources and developing their character and equipment. Missions, weapons and upgrades
The game has four selectable characters. Its combat loop combines primary and secondary weapons with resource gathering, weapon crafting and upgrades, plus character augmentation using organs and cybernetics. That progression layer is a major distinction from the straightforward run-and-gun structure associated with classic Contra.
Solo and multiplayer modes
Konami’s feature description lists a campaign playable solo or online with up to four players, local couch co-op, and online player-versus-player modes. Those are publisher-listed features, not confirmation that online matchmaking or services remain active today. Konami’s EU page says online play requires the applicable console subscription; for Switch local wireless play, each player needs a system and a copy of the game.

What do the reviews say?
At retrieval on October 8, 2026, Metacritic listed a critic Metascore of 52/100 from 24 reviews, classifying the response as “Mixed or Average.” Its user score was 3.8/10 from 58 ratings, classified as “Generally Unfavorable.” These are dated aggregator snapshots, not fixed measures of every player’s experience. The criticism is not unanimous. One review excerpt reproduced by Metacritic welcomed couch co-op but objected to the procedural maps, describing the game as “not Contra enough for fans but just about fun enough for the casual shooter crowd.” That sentence is from PlayStation Official Magazine UK, quoted on Metacritic; the listed reference is Issue 168, page 86. An IGN review excerpt, scored 40/100, objected to the change in genre and argued that the game failed to deliver for a modern audience.

Where do reviewers see the strengths and weaknesses?
A shooter idea with some promise
MeriStation’s 2019 review found a workable idea in alternating between primary and secondary weapons as they overheat. It also saw promise in some early levels and changes in perspective. Those observations point to moments when the combat and presentation can feel engaging, rather than a uniformly negative response to every mechanic.
Repetition and execution problems
The same review argued that the initial promise did not hold up across the experience, citing repetitive level design, camera problems and weak technical presentation. Alongside the broader criticism that this is a sharp departure from Contra’s familiar format, those issues help explain why the game’s mechanics did not translate into stronger overall reviews. This is one critic’s assessment, not a claim that every player will encounter the same experience.

Is Contra: Rogue Corps worth playing?
It is most likely to appeal if you want a co-op-capable shooter with missions, weapon crafting and character upgrades, and are open to Contra being reworked as a third-person twin-stick game. It is a riskier choice if your main reason for playing is the classic side-scrolling format: the central change is structural, not merely a new story or visual style.
For a purchase decision, weigh that format change against the dated review snapshot and the execution concerns critics raised. Current prices, stock and online-service availability are not established by the publisher’s launch-era feature list, so check the relevant store and platform before buying or planning an online session.
