For a faster ARK: Survival Ascended client, reduce Resolution Scale first, disable Motion Blur, lower Foliage and Fluid Interaction, turn off Virtual Shadows, and replace Lumen with Screen Space on weaker hardware. For a dedicated server, use NVMe storage, set a player cap you can actually support, control structure and creature counts, and test a longer autosave interval. These changes target different bottlenecks: your PC’s renderer determines frame rate, while the server is constrained by simulation work, memory, storage and save operations.

Start by identifying the problem: client FPS, network delay or server simulation

“Lag” in ASA can describe three different failures. A low frame rate is local rendering work; rubber-banding and delayed actions usually indicate network or server tick pressure; pauses at regular intervals often coincide with saves or asset streaming. Watch your frame counter and observe whether other players experience the same delay. If only your screen is slow, change client settings. If everyone freezes together, the host needs to profile the server before buying hardware.

Make a reproducible baseline

  1. Use the same location, weather and camera angle for each test. A busy base and an open beach produce very different results.
  2. Record average FPS and the worst one-percent lows for at least 60 seconds. Note whether you are in a cave, at dawn or dusk, in open daylight, or looking at a dense base.
  3. Change one setting at a time, restart the game when requested, and keep a written before-and-after value. A visual improvement that costs only a few frames may not be worth it during combat.

Highest-impact client settings for more FPS

The first four changes recommended by multiple community guides are Resolution Scale, Motion Blur, Foliage and Fluid Interaction, and Virtual Shadows. Apply them in that order, then retest. Resolution Scale affects the number of pixels rendered and generally delivers the largest immediate gain.

Resolution Scale

Use approximately 70–85% on a weak system. A mid-range system can usually begin at 90–100% and step down only if frame-time spikes remain. This is an internal render resolution, so the image becomes softer as you lower it; pair a reduced scale with DLSS or FSR upscaling when your GPU supports one. Keep the value high enough that distant creatures and building edges remain readable.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Motion Blur, foliage and fluid interaction

  • Motion Blur: disable it. It adds no gameplay information and can make camera movement appear less clear while consuming processing time.
  • Foliage and Fluid Interaction: lower or disable it if forests, grass movement, water surfaces or large bases cause the biggest drops. The setting reduces the amount of vegetation and fluid reacting to players, creatures and physics.
  • Virtual Shadows: turn them off on a weak GPU or when a crowded base causes stutter. Shadows can be restored later if your frame-time budget allows.

Lumen global illumination

Lumen is often the largest lighting cost in ASA. Choose Screen Space global illumination on weaker hardware. The visual difference is most apparent in caves and around dawn or dusk; in open daylight it is commonly subtle. If those locations are where your FPS collapses, this switch should precede small texture or effect adjustments.

Upscaling and frame generation

DLSS and FSR upscaling can recover performance while retaining more detail than a very low Resolution Scale. Frame Generation is a separate choice: enable it only when the underlying, non-generated frame rate is already stable above 60 FPS. Community guidance warns that using it below that baseline can make input latency noticeable in combat, even when the displayed FPS looks high.

Optional PC console commands

These commands are PC-only and should be tested rather than copied blindly. Open the in-game console using the key assigned by your platform, enter one command, and compare the result in the same scene.

r.VolumetricCloud 0
r.VolumetricFog 0

The first removes volumetric clouds and the second removes volumetric fog. Test r.VolumetricCloud 0 under an open sky before judging it; cloud lighting can make the visual change appear larger than the FPS gain. Commands and their behavior can change with patches, so remove them from any launch profile if a game update causes graphical artifacts or no longer recognizes them.

Mods and content updates

Every mod adds loading, memory or simulation work. Remove unneeded mods, then test a large content update by itself before combining it with your full collection. If the problem appears only after one mod or update, you have a useful isolation point instead of an untraceable stack of changes. Keep a copy of your mod list and save before major updates.

Server optimization: remove simulation pressure before upgrading hardware

A dedicated server must simulate players, creatures, structures, inventories, physics and scheduled saves. Load rises with concurrent players, dense construction and wild or abandoned tame populations. Set limits to the world you actually run instead of provisioning for an unlikely maximum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage and save location

Put the server installation and save directory on an NVMe SSD. Faster random I/O helps map loading, mod reads and save completion, although it cannot compensate for excessive simulation work. Avoid sharing the drive with a process that performs heavy backups or scans during peak play.

Player cap

Set the maximum player count to your realistic target. Each additional connected player adds network, character and world-simulation work even when that player is standing still. A lower, honest cap generally produces a more consistent experience than advertising a high slot count that the machine cannot sustain.

Structures, wild creatures and abandoned tames

Large bases create more replicated objects and collision checks. One community guide suggests a MaxStructuresInRange value around 10,500, reduced to about 8,000 for servers with more than 50 players. Treat those numbers as experiments, not universal recommendations: the key name and whether it is honored by the current build are disputed. Reduce wild creature density and clean up abandoned tames before trying obscure structure parameters; those changes address common sources of simulation pressure without relying on a contested key.

Autosave settings and the configuration-key problem

Frequent saves protect progress but can produce visible pauses on a large world. Community guides commonly describe a 15-minute default and suggest testing 30 minutes to reduce save stutter. A longer interval increases the amount of progress that could be lost if the process or machine fails, so pair it with working backups rather than treating it as a free performance setting.

Where server configuration files live

The ARK community wiki lists Windows server configuration under ShooterGameSavedConfigWindowsServer and Linux under ShooterGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/. See ark.wiki.gg for the current directory reference. One guide reports that some Linux deployments also read the WindowsServer folder; verify which file your launch method actually loads by changing a harmless setting, restarting, and checking the result in-game.

Two competing autosave names

Sources disagree on the key under [ServerSettings]. One uses:

AutoSavePeriodMinutes=30

Another uses:

ServerAutoSavePeriodMinutes=30

Do not assume both work. Back up the configuration, try the key that matches your server build, restart, and observe at least one complete save cycle. If the interval does not change, remove the unused key and test the alternative. An autosave crash theory—where a save taking longer than the interval causes failure—has not been established, so monitor actual save duration instead of relying on that explanation.

The contested structure key

The wiki and a Steam discussion use TheMaxStructuresInRange; the wiki example sets 1,000 as a launch option. Another configuration generator calls plain MaxStructuresInRange outdated and says the range is hard-coded in the current build. Because these names and behaviors conflict, change only one at a time and confirm that the server reports or demonstrates an effect. If nothing changes after a restart, revert the entry rather than accumulating inactive settings.

RAM, CPU and realistic capacity planning

Memory guidance varies substantially. A host guide gives 32 GB as a minimum for one-map vanilla, 64 GB for a cluster and 128 GB for a fully modded cluster with more than 30 players. Another recommends at least 64 GB of DDR5 for 50-plus players. A separate host table reports typical ASA usage of roughly 7.5–12 GB or more depending on the map. These figures are not an official Studio Wildcard specification; use them as planning ranges and leave headroom for the operating system, mods, backups and spikes. Treat 32 GB as a rough upper bound for a small installation, not a guarantee.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

CPU interpretation

Sources also disagree about whether single-thread performance or total core count matters most. ASA’s workload includes a main simulation thread plus parallel tasks, so measure your own instance. One host describes CPU readings above 100% as normal because several threads are used and suggests roughly 150–200% for vanilla and 200–400% for a heavy mod stack as healthy ranges. These percentages depend on the monitor’s definition of 100%; compare them with frame-time, tick delay and player reports rather than treating them as hard limits.

When to upgrade

  • If RAM is nearly full and the system swaps, add memory before changing CPU settings.
  • If one or more CPU threads stay saturated while memory remains available, a faster processor or fewer simulated entities is more relevant than a larger SSD.
  • If save pauses coincide with high disk latency, move the save directory to NVMe and verify backup jobs are not competing for I/O.

A practical server-tuning sequence

  1. Back up everything: copy the world save, configuration files and mod list while the server is stopped.
  2. Measure a normal peak: record connected players, RAM use, per-thread CPU, disk latency, save duration and reported tick or rubber-banding symptoms.
  3. Set the real player cap: start with the number your community normally reaches, not a marketing maximum.
  4. Reduce obvious entity load: remove unused mods, lower wild-creature pressure where appropriate and clean abandoned tames.
  5. Move files to NVMe: place both the server and save directory on fast storage.
  6. Test autosave: change one candidate key to 30 minutes, restart, and observe multiple saves while keeping backups.
  7. Test structure limits only if needed: use the key supported by your build, change one value, and confirm an effect before retaining it.
  8. Recheck under peak load: invite the normal number of players and compare the same metrics. Revert any change that improves one measure while creating rollbacks, crashes or unacceptable progress loss.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Low FPS only in caves or at dawn

Switch Lumen to Screen Space, then retest Resolution Scale and volumetric effects. Those scenes expose global-illumination and fog costs that may be invisible in open daylight.

Stutter around a mega-base

Lower Foliage and Fluid Interaction and disable Virtual Shadows on the client. On the server, inspect structure density, abandoned tames and mod activity; do not rely on a contested structure key until you have verified that your build reads it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Everyone freezes during saves

Measure save duration and disk latency, move saves to NVMe, and test a 30-minute interval with backups. A longer interval may reduce frequency but cannot make an individual save intrinsically smaller.

Rubber-banding with acceptable client FPS

Check server CPU by thread, memory pressure, player count and creature or structure density. Client graphics changes cannot fix a server that is behind on simulation.

Keep changes safe across patches

ASA settings and console commands can change with updates. Read the current patch notes, keep dated copies of configuration files, and revalidate every nonstandard key after a major patch. Several frequently repeated claims remain unverified, including a supposed Unreal Engine 5.3 30-tick cap, a “15% faster” result from -UseLargePages, and an approximately 40% reduction in save time from incremental saves. Do not build capacity plans around those numbers without measurements from your own version.

The reliable strategy is layered: take the large client graphics cuts first, remove server entity pressure, use fast storage, provide memory headroom, and confirm every disputed setting with a controlled restart and an observed result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 32 GB of RAM enough for an ASA server?

It may be adequate for a small, single-map vanilla setup, but published guidance ranges from 32 GB to 64 GB or 128 GB as player, map and mod counts rise. Leave headroom for the operating system and measure your own peak usage.

Should I enable Frame Generation to fix combat FPS?

Only when the underlying, non-generated frame rate is already stable above 60 FPS. Otherwise, the added input latency can be noticeable during combat.

Why did changing MaxStructuresInRange do nothing?

The key name and implementation are disputed. Some references use TheMaxStructuresInRange, while another says the range is hard-coded. Confirm which configuration your current build reads and verify the effect after a restart.
