For a new Java Edition server on a current release, Screaming BedWars is the strongest starting point because its Modrinth listing covers Java 26.3, 26.2, 26.1.x and 1.21.3–1.21.11, with release pages for Bukkit, Paper, Purpur and Spigot. BedWars1058 remains a capable open-source choice when you deliberately run an older supported version (its tested-version listing reaches 1.20), while BedWars2026 is a modern BedWars1058-derived project worth evaluating if its current build and documentation match your server.
This guide explains the decision, the server software and Java requirements, supporting plugins, an arena workflow, testing, and the problems most likely to stop a new BedWars installation.

Which BedWars plugin should you use?
Start with Minecraft-version support, not with a feature checklist. A minigame plugin that cannot load on your server version is unusable, regardless of its shop, statistics or cosmetic features. Check the plugin’s current release page immediately before downloading; the versions below are the published information available on October 14, 2026 and can change.
| Plugin | Best fit | Published compatibility or status | What to verify before installing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screaming BedWars | A new server using a current Minecraft release | Modrinth lists Java Edition 26.3, 26.2, 26.1.x and 1.21.3–1.21.11, and describes coverage back to 1.8.8. Release pages list Bukkit, Paper, Purpur and Spigot support; version 0.2.42 is listed for 1.21.3–1.21.11. | Confirm that the newest build still supports your exact Minecraft version and check the plugin page for its current licensing, optional features and command syntax. |
| BedWars1058 | A server intentionally staying on an older supported release, or an administrator who specifically wants its established open-source codebase | SpigotMC shows BedWars1058 – OpenSource 25.2, released February 9, 2025. The tested-version listing runs from 1.8 through 1.20; reviewers have reported missing 1.21 support. A separate 2026 template page says there is no build past 1.21.4, so the boundary is not consistently documented. | Match the exact plugin build to the exact Minecraft version. Do not assume a 1.21 server will work simply because a third-party page mentions a later snapshot. |
| BedWars2026 | An administrator looking for a modern BedWars1058-derived project with a current development focus | Its README describes a Spigot, Paper and Purpur plugin with arenas, teams, generators, shops, upgrades, NPCs and player statistics. It says the project is derived from BedWars1058. | Read the repository’s current release and README, then confirm dependencies, commands and data-migration expectations before using it on a production world. |
Do not treat claims that a plugin is “most downloaded” or “most popular” as a technical qualification: no primary, verifiable download figure is established for those statements. Choose on compatibility, maintenance, documentation and the features your players actually need.

Screaming BedWars: the current-version candidate
Screaming BedWars is the sensible first check for a new server because its published compatibility range includes recent Java Edition releases and several server implementations. The Modrinth page displays an LGPL-3.0-only licence. That licence indicates the software can be used under the licence terms, but it does not by itself establish the price of every optional service, cosmetic or statistics feature. Reports disagree about whether all extras are free, so read the current project page rather than budgeting from an old guide.
A hosting-provider article reports that Screaming BedWars 0.2.44 started cleanly on Paper 26.2. That is a second-hand report, not a guarantee for your hardware, Java runtime or configuration. Treat it as a compatibility lead and perform your own clean-start test.

BedWars1058: useful, but version-sensitive
BedWars1058 is the long-standing open-source option. The documented requirement is Java 11 or newer and either Spigot or Paper. The formal SpigotMC release identified here is 25.2 from February 9, 2025; a review console mentions a 25.5-SNAPSHOT, but no corresponding formal release announcement is established. That distinction matters: a snapshot log is not proof that a stable build exists.
If you select BedWars1058, plan around the tested 1.8–1.20 range shown on SpigotMC unless the current project page explicitly adds your target release. Running an unsupported 1.21 build can produce startup errors, broken event handling or arenas that appear to work while silently failing in play.
BedWars2026: a modern fork to evaluate
BedWars2026 presents itself as a modern BedWars plugin for Spigot, Paper and Purpur. Its README lists arena management, teams, generators, shops, upgrades, NPCs and player statistics, and identifies BedWars1058 as its source lineage. It lists PlaceholderAPI, Citizens and Vault as soft dependencies, meaning those integrations activate when the corresponding plugins are installed rather than making every installation mandatory.

Because a project README can change independently of packaged releases, use the README and release page together. Confirm the supported Minecraft versions, Java requirement, permissions and migration instructions before replacing an existing BedWars installation.
Pick Paper, Purpur or Spigot and the right Java runtime
Paper is the usual starting point for a BedWars minigame server. Guides commonly recommend it over vanilla Spigot for optimization, reduced lag and faster chunk loading, and recommend Paper or Purpur rather than vanilla or Forge for this type of server. Those are general platform recommendations, not a promise of a particular tick rate: map complexity, view distance, entity counts, plugins and hardware still determine performance.
Use the server software required by your chosen plugin. Screaming BedWars release pages list Bukkit, Paper, Purpur and Spigot support; BedWars1058 requires Spigot or Paper; BedWars2026 describes Spigot, Paper and Purpur support. If a release page narrows that list for a particular build, follow the narrower requirement.
Java and memory planning
- BedWars1058 documents Java 11 or newer.
- A Paper 26.2 hosting template uses Java 25 and allocates 4 GB of memory. This is an example template configuration, not a universal minimum for every map, player count or plugin combination.
- Use the Java version recommended by the exact Paper or Purpur build you install. A plugin’s minimum Java version and the server software’s supported Java version both have to be satisfied.
- Allocate memory for the server process without starving the operating system. Increase it only after observing garbage collection, timings and actual player load; more memory alone does not cure a badly configured arena.
Prepare a clean BedWars server
1. Create a separate server directory
Keep the BedWars instance separate from any survival server. Make regular backups of the entire directory, including worlds, plugin configuration, player data and the server’s permission files. Test restores on a second directory before inviting players.
2. Install the server software
- Download the Paper, Purpur or Spigot build that matches the Minecraft version you intend to run.
- Place the server jar in the new directory and start it with the Java command recommended by that server project.
- Accept the EULA in
eula.txtonly after reading its terms, then start the server again. - Stop the server cleanly and confirm that the world and configuration files were generated before adding plugins.
For production, run the server under a dedicated account, restrict file permissions, expose only the necessary game and query ports, and keep the operating system and Java runtime patched. These operational steps are independent of which BedWars plugin you choose.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
3. Add the BedWars plugin
- Download the build from the chosen plugin’s current project or release page.
- Copy the jar into the server’s
pluginsdirectory while the server is stopped. - Start the server and read the console for dependency errors, Java-version errors and a successful enable message.
- Stop the server, review the generated BedWars configuration, and restart once more after making deliberate changes.
Never substitute commands from a BedWars1058 guide for Screaming BedWars, or vice versa. Similar plugins often use different subcommands, permission nodes and storage formats.
Install supporting plugins only when your design needs them
| Plugin | Role in a BedWars setup | When to install |
|---|---|---|
| Multiverse-Core | Keeps each arena in its own world so maps can be reset or isolated from the lobby. | Use it when arenas and lobby worlds must be separate and your BedWars plugin does not provide equivalent world management. |
| WorldEdit | Builds, copies or pastes arena structures. | Install for map construction and repeatable schematic work; restrict its permissions to trusted administrators. |
| Citizens | Provides NPCs such as shop or upgrade characters. | Install when your selected BedWars configuration uses NPC shops or other Citizens integrations. |
| PlaceholderAPI | Supplies placeholders for compatible scoreboards, messages and statistics. | Install only for interfaces that actually use its placeholders. BedWars2026 lists it as a soft dependency. |
| Vault | Connects compatible economy or permission integrations. | Install if your BedWars setup or another plugin requires Vault; BedWars2026 lists it as a soft dependency. |
| ClearLagg or StackMob | Optional tools for controlling entity-related load. | Consider them only after measuring a real entity or lag problem. Aggressive cleanup can remove gameplay entities or interfere with generators. |
Install one dependency at a time and restart between changes. If the server stops enabling BedWars, the last added jar is the first suspect. Check for duplicate libraries and remove outdated versions before replacing the BedWars jar.
Configure a lobby and arena
The following command sequence is documented for BedWars2026. Screaming BedWars and BedWars1058 can use different command names, menu labels or permission requirements; consult the selected plugin’s documentation before entering commands on a live server.
1. Set the lobby
- Join as an administrator with the plugin’s required permission.
- Stand at the exact location where players should arrive.
- Run
/bw admin setlobby. - Reconnect or use the plugin’s lobby command to verify the saved position, orientation and world.
Build the lobby outside every arena’s reset region. Keep signs, NPCs and portals in a protected area so an arena reset cannot overwrite them.

2. Create an arena record
- Run
/bw admin arena create <name>, replacing<name>with a short unique identifier such asdesert_01. - Record the name in your map inventory and backup notes. Avoid renaming an arena after players or external menus reference it.
3. Open the editor and set the game points
- Run
/bw admin arena edit <name>. - Use the editor GUI to create the teams that the map supports.
- Set each team’s player spawn and confirm that every spawn faces the intended direction.
- Set each team’s bed location. Check that the bed is complete and that breaking either half triggers the intended game state.
- Place iron, gold, diamond and other generators required by the game mode. Verify their intervals and safe access routes.
- Configure spectator or waiting locations if the plugin exposes those options.
- Save the arena through the GUI before leaving the editor.
Use a consistent naming scheme for worlds, arenas and teams. A naming convention such as map_mode_number makes console errors and backups easier to interpret.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Enable the arena
- Run
/bw admin arena enable <name>. - Watch the console for validation errors instead of assuming that a successful command means every point was saved.
- Join the waiting area as a non-admin account and confirm that the arena appears in the player-facing selector.
Test the complete game loop before opening the server
Use at least two ordinary player accounts, and preferably one account per team, for a first pass. Test in a private or whitelisted environment so a failed reset cannot affect public players.
- Joining: Players can reach the lobby, see the arena, join a team and leave without being trapped in a queue.
- Countdown: The match starts only when the configured player conditions are met, and the countdown cancels correctly when players leave.
- Spawns and beds: Every player appears at the correct base, beds are breakable, and a player who dies after a bed is destroyed cannot respawn.
- Generators: Resources appear at the intended points and intervals, can be collected by all teams and do not accumulate uncontrollably after a reset.
- Shop and upgrades: NPCs or menus open, prices use the intended currencies, purchases apply to the right team and inaccessible items remain inaccessible.
- Elimination and victory: The final team is identified correctly, spectators can watch without altering the match, and the winning screen or message appears.
- Reset: Blocks broken during a match return to their original state, dropped items and entities are cleared, inventories and effects reset, and the next match starts on a clean map.
- Disconnects: Rejoining players receive the correct state, while a player who leaves permanently does not block the arena.
- Cross-world safety: Players cannot carry arena items into the lobby or another world, and WorldEdit or administrative commands cannot be used by ordinary players.
Run a second match after restarting the server. A configuration that works only until the first restart is not ready for public use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot the failures that appear most often
The plugin is listed as “Could not load”
- Check the Java version against both the server build and plugin requirement.
- Confirm that the jar belongs to the Minecraft version and server implementation you are running.
- Read the first error and its “Caused by” section in the console; later stack traces are often consequences.
- Remove duplicate or obsolete dependency jars, then restart from a clean stop.
The arena exists but cannot start
Reopen the editor and check every required team, spawn, bed and generator. A missing point, two teams sharing a location, or an unsaved GUI change can leave an arena visible but invalid. Use the plugin’s validation output if available, then enable the arena again.
NPC shops or placeholders are blank
Install the optional integration named by the plugin, verify that its version supports your server, and check placeholder expansion or Citizens configuration. BedWars2026 treats PlaceholderAPI, Citizens and Vault as soft dependencies, so the base plugin can load while those features remain inactive.
The map does not reset correctly
Check that the arena world is isolated, that the reset mechanism completed without errors, and that no other plugin is modifying the same region. Temporarily remove cosmetic, protection or entity-management plugins to identify conflicts. Restore a known-good backup before testing destructive reset changes.

Players report lag
Measure first: inspect server timings or equivalent profiling data during a full match. Reduce unnecessary entities, redstone and view distance, optimize map geometry, and review generator or NPC counts. Optional cleanup plugins can help in a measured case, but configure them conservatively so they do not remove dropped resources or required game entities.

Screaming BedWars displays an LGPL-3.0-only licence on Modrinth. BedWars1058 is presented as open source on SpigotMC, and BedWars2026 describes itself as derived from that project. Read each project’s current licence and redistribution terms before bundling jars in a public server pack.
Keep a change log containing the Minecraft version, server jar, Java version, BedWars build, dependency versions and configuration changes. Before updating:
- Stop the server cleanly and make a full backup.
- Read the plugin release notes for migration steps and breaking command or configuration changes.
- Test the update on a copy of the server with one arena and two accounts.
- Check startup, arena creation, reset, shops, statistics and a second match after restart.
- Promote the update only after the test copy survives those checks.
Do not infer a price from a licence label. Current reports conflict about whether Screaming BedWars extras are paid, so verify the project page’s present terms for cosmetics, statistics and any premium components before promising features to players.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Choose Screaming BedWars first when its current release explicitly supports your target Minecraft version.
- Choose BedWars1058 when you are intentionally running a version in its documented support range and value its established open-source base.
- Evaluate BedWars2026 when its current README, release and dependencies fit your planned Paper, Purpur or Spigot deployment.
- Use Paper or Purpur for a minigame-oriented server unless the selected plugin requires another implementation.
- Install Multiverse-Core, WorldEdit, Citizens, PlaceholderAPI or Vault only for features that need them.
- Use the exact commands from the chosen plugin’s documentation; the BedWars2026 commands in this guide are not universal.
- Back up before every plugin or server update and test a complete match after restarting.
