What engram settings control in ARK
Engrams are the learnable crafting recipes that players buy with engram points as they level. Server administrators can change the points awarded at each level, alter a particular recipe, hide recipes from the engram list, remove level or prerequisite restrictions, or unlock everything automatically.

ASE and ASA are different games
This guide is for ARK: Survival Evolved. ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) uses a similar-looking OverrideNamedEngramEntries structure, but it is a different game with different builds and configuration behavior. An ASA example should not be copied into an ASE server without checking that the engram class exists in ASE and that the host panel accepts the same syntax.
Game updates can rename, remove, or replace engram classes. Even a correctly formatted line can therefore stop working when its class name no longer matches the current build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesARK engram points per level Game.ini
OverridePlayerLevelEngramPoints sets the number of engram points awarded at each level-up. The reported format uses one line per level, beginning with level 2. The first line is therefore the level-2 award, the second line the level-3 award, and so on.

Example point progression
[/script/shootergame.shootergamemode]
OverridePlayerLevelEngramPoints=0
OverridePlayerLevelEngramPoints=8
OverridePlayerLevelEngramPoints=8
OverridePlayerLevelEngramPoints=10
| Line order | Player level represented | Points awarded |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 0 |
| 2 | 3 | 8 |
| 3 | 4 | 8 |
| 4 | 5 | 10 |
To define a complete progression, continue the sequence for every level you intend to support; do not treat the four-line example as a universal level cap. Keep the lines in level order. A value of 0 means no points are awarded for that listed level, while a larger value gives players more points to spend at that level.
Planning a points curve
- Use a small early value if you want players to make meaningful choices from the first levels.
- Use larger later values when the server is intended to expose advanced recipes without requiring players to respec.
- Compare the total points awarded with the total cost of the engrams you expect a character to learn. Community examples also describe dividing a desired total by the number of levels, but that is a planning method rather than a separate server setting.
- A single line such as
OverridePlayerLevelEngramPoints=10000appears in a forum example described as a different use. Do not assume it represents a complete per-level progression; use an ordered line for each level you are configuring.
OverrideNamedEngramEntries example
Use OverrideNamedEngramEntries when the change applies to a particular recipe rather than to every level-up. Add one parenthesized entry per engram. The reported fields are:
| Field | Effect |
|---|---|
EngramClassName |
Identifies the engram by its class name. |
EngramIndex |
Alternative numeric identifier used by some examples. |
EngramHidden |
Controls whether the engram is visible in the engram list. |
EngramPointsCost |
Sets the number of engram points required. |
EngramLevelRequirement |
Sets the player level required to learn it. |
RemoveEngramPreReq |
Removes the engram’s prerequisite requirement when set to true. |
Class-name form
[/script/shootergame.shootergamemode]
OverrideNamedEngramEntries=(EngramClassName="EngramEntry_WoodChair_C",EngramHidden=false,EngramPointsCost=8,EngramLevelRequirement=10,RemoveEngramPreReq=false)
This example targets the class name, makes the recipe visible, charges 8 points, requires level 10, and leaves prerequisites in place. The class name is an example reported for the Primitive Server Settings page; verify that it still exists in the build running on your server.

Numeric-index form
[/script/shootergame.shootergamemode]
OverrideNamedEngramEntries=(EngramIndex=529,EngramHidden=False,EngramPointsCost=38,EngramLevelRequirement=91,RemoveEngramPreReq=True)
This alternative identifies an engram with index 529, sets its cost to 38 points, requires level 91, hides it, and removes its prerequisites. Numeric indexes and class names are not interchangeable values: use the identifier that matches the engram entry you intend to modify.
Formatting rules that matter
- Keep the entire override on one line unless your hosting panel documents a different format.
- Use the field names exactly as shown. Case and punctuation are reported as significant by server administrators.
- Keep the parentheses, commas, quotation marks, and equals signs intact.
- Add a separate
OverrideNamedEngramEntries=line for each engram you change. - Place the engram override list last in
Game.ini, after the other settings under the game-mode header.
Hide engrams ARK server settings
To hide a recipe, set EngramHidden=True (or the equivalent boolean form accepted by your panel) in that engram’s OverrideNamedEngramEntries line. Hiding changes whether the recipe appears in the engram interface; it is separate from changing its point cost or level requirement.
[/script/shootergame.shootergamemode]
OverrideNamedEngramEntries=(EngramClassName="EngramEntry_WoodChair_C",EngramHidden=True,EngramPointsCost=8,EngramLevelRequirement=10,RemoveEngramPreReq=False)
You can combine visibility, cost, level, and prerequisite changes in the same entry. For example, a hidden engram can still have a defined cost and level requirement for commands or server-side systems that refer to it. If the goal is simply to prevent players from seeing a recipe, change EngramHidden and leave the other values at the behavior you want.

ARK unlock all engrams server setting
The reported all-unlock switch is:
bAutoUnlockAllEngrams=True
Put it in GameUserSettings.ini, not under the [/script/shootergame.shootergamemode] section in Game.ini. This is an all-or-nothing approach: it is different from setting selected costs, levels, visibility, or prerequisites with named overrides.
| If you want to… | Use… |
|---|---|
| Give a custom number of points at each level | OverridePlayerLevelEngramPoints in Game.ini |
| Change only selected recipes | OverrideNamedEngramEntries in Game.ini |
| Make every engram unlock automatically | bAutoUnlockAllEngrams=True in GameUserSettings.ini |
The auto-unlock setting is reported by a server guide rather than confirmed here against the current official wiki, so test it on the exact ASE build and hosting service you operate.
How to configure engrams ARK server: step-by-step
- Identify the game. Confirm that the server is ASE. Do not mix an ASA-only example with an ASE configuration.
- Stop the server or use its configuration editor. Editing while the service is writing files can overwrite your changes. If a control panel exposes separate fields for
Game.iniandGameUserSettings.ini, select the correct one. - Back up both files. Save a copy of the current files before changing the engram section so you can restore a known-good configuration.
- Open
Game.ini. Locate[/script/shootergame.shootergamemode]. Add the per-level lines or named overrides beneath that header. - Keep the override list last. The reported guidance places the engram override list at the end of
Game.ini. Do not append unrelated settings after it unless your host specifically requires that layout. - Choose one control strategy for the goal. Use ordered
OverridePlayerLevelEngramPointslines for a level-by-level economy, named entries for recipe-specific changes, or the all-unlock switch for automatic access to every engram. - Check syntax character by character. Verify the header, spelling, capitalization, parentheses, commas, quotation marks, and boolean values. Remove comments or formatting added by a panel if that panel does not support them.
- Save and restart. Start the server only after the file is saved, then allow it to finish loading before testing with a fresh level-up or a character that can view the affected engram.
- Test one change first. A single known engram makes it easier to distinguish a bad class name from a file-location or formatting problem. Add larger batches only after the first entry works.
- Record the working configuration. Keep the tested lines with the server build and map they worked on. This makes later updates easier to diagnose if an engram class changes.
Choosing between the three approaches
| Approach | Best for | Control level | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-level points | Servers with a custom progression curve | Points awarded at every level | Requires an ordered entry for each level you configure; it does not target one recipe by itself. |
| Named engram overrides | Balancing or hiding selected recipes | Individual visibility, cost, level, and prerequisites | Requires a current class name or index, and class identifiers can change. |
| Auto-unlock | Servers that want all recipes available automatically | Global all-engram access | Provides no selective per-recipe economy unless combined with other tested settings. |
Do not use all three merely because they are available. Decide whether your design is based on a progression economy, a curated recipe list, or unrestricted access, then add only the settings needed for that design.

Engram override not working ARK: troubleshooting
The server starts, but nothing changes
- Confirm the line is in
Game.ini, notGameUserSettings.ini. - Confirm the game-mode header is spelled exactly as
[/script/shootergame.shootergamemode]. - Check that the server was restarted after saving.
- Check that the override lines are the last entries in
Game.ini.
A named engram is unaffected
- Verify the class name or numeric index against the current ASE build. The reported wood-chair class and index 529 examples may not identify the same entry in every build.
- Check every field name, comma, quote, parenthesis, and boolean value.
- Try one entry by itself. If a single test works, add the remaining entries one at a time to find the malformed line.
The point curve is shifted by one level
Remember that the first OverridePlayerLevelEngramPoints line represents level 2, not level 1. Recount the lines from the first entry and ensure no line was inserted or removed in the middle of the sequence.
The setting works on one map but not another
Forum reports conflict about whether engram overrides apply consistently on alternate maps. That behavior is not established here. Test the exact map, build, and host combination you use; do not assume that a configuration proven on one map will behave identically on another.
The panel changes the text or rejects the line
Some hosting control panels reformat configuration values. Their accepted capitalization and line-wrapping rules can differ from a raw file. Preserve the reported field names and ask the host whether its editor expects one entry per field, one complete entry per line, or a dedicated override box.
Maintaining engram settings through updates
- Keep a dated backup before every game or server update.
- After an update, test one per-level line, one named entry, and the all-unlock switch separately if you use them.
- Review every
EngramClassNameandEngramIndex; an update can rename or remove an engram. - Keep ASE and ASA configuration files in separate notes. Similar syntax does not prove identical behavior.
- When a change fails, revert to the last known-good file and reintroduce settings in small batches.
A compact working template
The following shows the file relationship without claiming that these values suit every server. Replace the example progression and recipe identifier with values verified for your build.
; Game.ini
[/script/shootergame.shootergamemode]
OverridePlayerLevelEngramPoints=0
OverridePlayerLevelEngramPoints=8
OverridePlayerLevelEngramPoints=8

; GameUserSettings.ini
bAutoUnlockAllEngrams=True
In a real configuration, continue the level list for the levels you support, add one complete named-entry line for each recipe you intend to alter, and place the auto-unlock line in the appropriate user-settings file rather than copying it into Game.ini.
