The XP may be going to a different eligible recipient, the survivor or creature may have reached its applicable level cap, a multiplier may be reducing or disabling gains, or an outdated client/server build may be mishandling mounted XP.

Find out who should receive the experience, test a documented XP action while dismounted, check the relevant multiplier and game mode, then update the client and server before changing saves. Why ARK can look like it is not giving XP
ARK awards experience to eligible survivors, creatures and, in some situations, other players connected to the same activity. Watching one XP bar does not prove that no experience was awarded. A ridden mount, an unridden tame, a nearby player, a tribe member or another eligible recipient may receive the credit instead of the character you are checking.
There is also a hard limit. A creature that has reached its applicable maximum level cannot continue gaining passive XP. The official experience documentation specifically notes that maximum-level creatures and Meks do not gain passive experience. Increasing a multiplier cannot make a capped creature level again.

Finally, the amount awarded is controlled by server and local settings. The global XPMultiplier has a default of 1.0; that value represents the normal experience rate used by single-player and official public-server settings. GenericXPMultiplier and action-specific multipliers can alter individual activities. A value below 1 reduces gains, while a value of 0 or a conflicting custom configuration can make XP appear to be absent.
Use this six-step diagnosis first
- Identify the intended recipient. Decide whether you are checking the survivor, a ridden tame, an unridden tame or another tribe member. Note the current level of the survivor or creature.
- Dismount. Move away from the mount’s XP display and perform the test as the survivor. This prevents mount XP from being mistaken for survivor XP.
- Perform a known XP action. Harvest a nearby resource or craft a simple item. Crafting and harvesting are documented survivor XP sources.
- Check the configured rates. On a dedicated server, inspect
XPMultiplier,GenericXPMultiplierand any action-specific XP multipliers. In single-player or host/local play, inspect the XP controls in the Basic and Advanced sections of Host/Local Settings. - Run an Explorer Note test. Collect a note, verify that its temporary multiplier is visible, then immediately repeat the same harvest or crafting action.
- Update before editing saves. Update the client and, where applicable, the dedicated server. Retest on the current build before attempting save manipulation or extensive configuration changes.
This order matters: it distinguishes a recipient or cap issue from a settings issue, then separates a game-version bug from an activity that simply does not award the XP you expected.

Check who should receive the XP
Survivor XP
Survivors gain experience from actions including crafting, harvesting and killing creatures. To test the survivor, dismount and perform one of those actions yourself. Watch the survivor’s level progress rather than the mount’s status panel.
If the bar advances during this controlled test, the survivor system is working. The original activity may have credited a different participant or may not have been an XP source under your current mode and settings.

Ridden and unridden tames
A tame can gain XP independently of the survivor. A ridden creature may receive credit for activity performed while mounted, while an unridden tame may receive passive XP under the rules for that creature and mode. Check the tame’s own level and XP progress before concluding that the survivor has received nothing.
Passive XP stops for a creature that is already at its applicable maximum level. This is a cap, not a multiplier problem; changing rates will not create additional levels beyond the creature’s limit. The same official experience guidance states that maximum-level Meks do not gain passive XP.
Other players and tribe members
Some activities can credit a nearby player, a tribe member or another eligible recipient. If several players are harvesting, crafting, fighting or riding together, check the logs and each participant’s XP bar. The player who performs an action is not always the only character affected, and the character you are observing may not be the recipient.
Mount XP and the dismount rule
When the problem involves a mount, dismount and earn direct survivor XP before judging the result. ARK’s patch history records a historical mounted XP-reset problem fixed in patch 171.6, with the changelog advising players to earn survivor XP after dismounting. A later patch, 172.3, added 50% of mount XP to the human character. These entries describe behavior changes across builds, so the exact result depends on the version and mode you are running.

Verify XP multipliers and game mode
Rates are evaluated differently depending on whether you are playing single-player, hosting locally, or connecting to a dedicated server. Confirm the mode before changing a setting; a control visible in one menu or platform may not have an identical label elsewhere.
| Setting or context | What it controls | What to check |
|---|---|---|
XPMultiplier |
Global scaling for player, tribe and tame experience | The documented default is 1.0. Lower values reduce XP; a value of 0 can make gains appear absent. |
GenericXPMultiplier |
A generic adjustment that can affect XP outside a more specific action rule | Look for an override that conflicts with the global rate or the action you are testing. |
| Action-specific XP multipliers | Scaling for particular XP sources or activities | Check the multiplier associated with harvesting, crafting, killing or the activity that fails. |
| Single-player or host/local | Local game rules exposed through the settings interface | Open Host/Local Settings and review the XP controls in both the Basic and Advanced sections. |
| Dedicated server | Server-side rules applied to connected players and tames | Inspect the server configuration and restart or reload it according to your hosting procedure after a deliberate change. |
The official configuration documentation describes 1.0 as producing the same amounts of experience as single-player and official public servers. That is a baseline, not a guarantee that every unofficial server uses it. A server owner may intentionally set a different rate, and a platform or game mode may expose the control in a different place.
When a multiplier change is the wrong fix
- The creature is capped: a higher rate cannot raise a maximum-level creature or Mek.
- The survivor is not the recipient: changing rates does not move XP from a mount or another player to your survivor.
- The activity is not the test: first verify with harvesting or crafting while dismounted.
- The server has conflicting rules: a global value may be overridden by a generic or action-specific multiplier.
Run a controlled XP test
A controlled test removes the variables that make ARK’s normal gameplay difficult to interpret. Use the same character, location and mode for each attempt.
- Record your starting state. Note the survivor’s level, the tame’s level if relevant, whether you are on single-player, host/local, official or unofficial play, and the client and server build.
- Separate from the mount. Dismount and make sure you are looking at the survivor’s own XP progress.
- Harvest a nearby resource. Harvest one resource yourself. Harvesting is a documented XP source and provides a repeatable action without requiring combat.
- Craft a low-cost item if needed. Craft a simple item directly from the survivor inventory. Crafting is also listed as a survivor XP source.
- Observe the correct bar. Confirm whether the survivor’s progress changes. If it does, the missing XP was tied to the original recipient or activity. If it does not, continue with the configuration and update checks.
- Repeat once after checking settings. Avoid changing several multipliers between attempts; otherwise you will not know which setting affected the result.
If harvesting and crafting both work while a particular activity does not, focus on that activity’s recipient and action-specific multiplier. If neither works for the survivor, inspect the global and generic multipliers and verify that the server is using the configuration you edited.

Use Explorer Notes as a deliberate test
Explorer Notes are useful because they provide a large XP award and a temporary experience multiplier. Depending on the note, the boost is 2x or 4x. Two different boosts can stack to 8x.
- Collect an Explorer Note with the survivor you are testing.
- Confirm that the temporary multiplier timer or indicator is visible.
- Immediately harvest a resource or craft an item yourself while dismounted.
- Watch the survivor’s XP progress and record whether it changes during the active timer.
A visible note timer with no survivor progress points back to the recipient, cap, multiplier or version checks. Do not use the note test on a maximum-level tame and expect passive XP; the level cap still applies.

Update the game before changing a save
ARK’s XP behavior has changed across patches. The changelog documents a mounted XP-reset issue fixed in patch 171.6 and records a patch 172.3 change that added 50% of mount XP to the human character. If your client or server is on an older build, a fix that exists in the current version may not be present.
Update both sides when you control both sides: the client and the dedicated server. On an official server, you cannot apply the server update yourself, so record the server’s reported build and contact the operator if it is behind. Retest after the update before altering save files.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Do not treat a historical rate announcement as proof of a permanent current setting. Studio Wildcard announced permanent double harvesting, experience and taming rates in 2016, but the active rate for your present session is determined by the current server, event and configuration state.
Fixes by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Survivor bar does not move while mounted | XP is being credited to the mount, or mounted XP behavior is affected by the build | Dismount, harvest or craft directly, then update the client and server if the direct test still fails. |
| Tame is not gaining passive XP | The tame has reached its applicable maximum level | Check the tame’s level cap. A multiplier change will not add passive XP beyond the cap. |
| Only one activity gives no XP | An action-specific multiplier or recipient rule is affecting that activity | Test harvesting and crafting, then inspect the specific action setting. |
| No survivor XP in single-player or host/local | A Basic or Advanced XP control is set unusually, or the watched character is not the recipient | Review Host/Local Settings in both sections, confirm the mode and repeat the dismounted test. |
| No XP on an unofficial dedicated server | Server-side global, generic or action-specific configuration | Ask the administrator to inspect XPMultiplier, GenericXPMultiplier and activity-specific values. |
| Explorer Note appears to do nothing | The timer was not confirmed, the wrong character collected it, or the tested character is capped | Collect the note with the survivor, verify the visible timer and perform a direct action immediately. |
| Problem began after a move between servers or updates | Different mode, rates or build | Record the new server type, map, platform and build, then compare settings and retest after updating. |
Platform, mode and version details to record
Reports that say only “ARK is not giving XP” omit the information needed to identify the correct fix. Record these details before contacting a server operator or community support:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Platform and edition.
- Map name.
- Single-player, host/local, official server or unofficial dedicated server.
- Client version and, for a dedicated server, server build.
- Survivor level and the tame’s level if a creature is involved.
- Whether the missing XP affects the survivor, a ridden tame, an unridden tame or another tribe member.
- The exact action that failed and whether harvesting or crafting worked while dismounted.
- The values of
XPMultiplier,GenericXPMultiplierand any relevant action-specific multiplier. - Whether an Explorer Note timer was visible during the test.
These distinctions determine whether the next step is a cap check, a recipient check, a local-menu review, a server configuration correction or a version update.
When the problem is probably resolved
You have isolated the issue when a dismounted survivor gains XP from harvesting or crafting, the intended tame or player receives the expected credit, or the Explorer Note test produces a visible change. At that point, restore only the settings you intentionally changed and document the working values for future troubleshooting.
If a dismounted survivor still receives no XP after the global, generic and action-specific settings are verified and both client and server are current, provide the recorded platform, mode, map, level, recipient and build information to the server operator or technical support. That evidence is more useful than repeatedly changing multipliers or editing a save.
