A reliable V Rising restart has four parts: enable RCON, warn players before maintenance, issue a controlled shutdown, and let a service manager start the dedicated server again. A practical Windows schedule gives players a 10-minute notice, waits 600 seconds, stops the service, allows 60 seconds for a clean exit, applies optional updates, and starts the server. The same design works on Linux with a supervisor and timer.

What an automatic restart should do
A restart is not the same as a world reset. A restart closes and relaunches the server process while keeping the existing save. A reset changes the world on a schedule and is controlled by different settings. Keep those operations separate so a routine maintenance window cannot accidentally wipe or rotate a world.

The complete maintenance flow is:
- Connect to the server through RCON.
- Send a player-facing warning, normally with
announcerestart 10. - Wait for the warning period to expire.
- Send
shutdownso the server exits cleanly. - Let the service wrapper or scheduler detect the exit.
- Optionally update the server files.
- Start the dedicated server and verify that players can reconnect.
This sequence avoids an unexpected kick and gives the server time to write its final state. Stunlock Studios says that although the server software can often run for several days, administrators should restart it from time to time and recommends a daily restart in its V Rising Dedicated Server Instructions 1.1.x PS5.
Choose the hosting and supervision model
For self-hosting, the dedicated-server software is free; you supply the machine, network access, RCON configuration, scheduler and process supervisor. A managed host may provide the machine and a control panel, but scheduled warnings and command-level RCON access differ by provider. Confirm those capabilities before moving a live community.

The instructions below assume a self-hosted installation because that exposes every part of the restart chain. On a managed service, translate the same order into the provider’s control panel and ask support whether its restart action sends an in-game warning first.
Enable and secure RCON
RCON is the administration channel used to announce and stop the server without abruptly terminating the process. In ServerHostSettings.json, configure the Rcon object with these three required values:

Keep the JSON valid and restart the dedicated server after changing the file so the new RCON listener is loaded. Do not put the password in a shared document or a script that is readable by every local user. Store it in a protected environment, credential store or file with restrictive permissions, then have the automation read it at run time.
Restrict the RCON port at the firewall. If the scheduler runs on the same machine, bind or permit local access where your installation allows it instead of exposing the port to the public internet. If remote administration is required, limit the source addresses to your administration network and use a long password.

Before scheduling a production restart, connect with your RCON client from the same account and machine that will run the task. A failed authentication or blocked port is much easier to correct while players are not online.
Learn the commands and test them safely
Warn players with the built-in restart message
Send announcerestart 10 through RCON to tell connected players that the server will restart in 10 minutes. The command supplies a localized warning, so players receive the server’s standard restart announcement rather than a silent disconnect.

Use announce when you need wording that the built-in restart message does not provide. For example, a custom message can identify a patch, maintenance reason or expected return time. Keep it factual and include the planned interruption; do not imply that the world is being reset unless that is actually the operation.
Stop and cancel a pending shutdown
Use shutdown to request a controlled stop after the warning period. If the maintenance window is cancelled, use cancelshutdown before the shutdown occurs. Test both commands so an operator can abort a mistaken schedule without killing the process manually.

Run these tests with a non-production schedule. Confirm that an online character sees the announcement, that shutdown ends the process cleanly, and that the supervisor starts the server again. Also verify that a cancelled shutdown leaves the server available and does not trigger an unnecessary restart.
Build the Windows restart sequence
A common Windows arrangement uses mcrcon for command delivery and NSSM (the Non-Sucking Service Manager) to run the V Rising process as a service. Windows Task Scheduler can launch the maintenance script at a fixed time, while NSSM handles the service stop and start. Adapt the service name, installation path, RCON credentials and update command to your own installation.

The cited automation example uses this sequence:

# start VRisingServer again via the service wrapper or scheduled taskThe ... represents your mcrcon connection arguments, including the RCON host, port and password. Keep those values out of a script that other users can read. The first timeout is 600 seconds, matching the 10-minute warning. After the service stop request, the second timeout allows 60 seconds for the process to exit and finish disk writes before files are changed.
Create the scheduled task
- Save the maintenance commands in a script stored in a directory that only administrators and the service account can read.
- Open Windows Task Scheduler and create a task for the account that has permission to call mcrcon, control the NSSM service and run the update program.
- Set the trigger to the maintenance time that fits your community. Use the server’s local time zone and account for daylight-saving changes if the task is intended to run at a fixed UTC time.
- Configure the action to run the script with its full path. Set the working directory explicitly if the update tool or service wrapper expects one.
- Enable the option that allows the task to run whether or not an administrator is logged on, then test with an on-demand run.
Do not let the task report success merely because the stop command was issued. After the wait, check that the process is actually gone before updating files. Then start the service and confirm that the server process remains running rather than exiting immediately.

Place updates between stop and start
If the maintenance window includes a game update, perform it only after the controlled stop and the 60-second wait. Never overwrite binaries while the server process is still running. If an update fails, leave the service stopped, preserve the existing save backup, and investigate before attempting a start with partially updated files.

Implement the same pattern on Linux
Linux does not change the RCON portion: enable RCON in ServerHostSettings.json, send the announcement, wait, and issue shutdown. Replace Task Scheduler and NSSM with an operating-system supervisor such as a system service plus a timer or an equivalent process manager.
- Create a service definition that starts the V Rising dedicated-server executable from its installation directory.
- Configure the supervisor to restart the service when the process exits unexpectedly, not only when an operator requests a stop.
- Create a timer or cron-triggered maintenance script that sends the RCON warning, waits 600 seconds, requests
shutdown, waits for the process to disappear, and then starts the service again. - If updates are part of the window, run them after the clean stop and before the service start.
- Record the service and script logs so you can distinguish an RCON failure, a failed update, a permissions problem and a crash during startup.
Use the supervisor’s native restart policy for crashes. A planned RCON shutdown should be treated as a normal maintenance event, while an unexpected exit should trigger an immediate restart policy appropriate for your machine and community.

Automatic restarts are only safe when the save policy is deliberate. In the server settings, AutoSaveInterval is measured in seconds and controls how often the game writes an autosave. AutoSaveCount retains multiple autosave files, giving you rollback points instead of a single copy. AutoSaveSmartKeep can retain saves by age so older recovery points are not all discarded at once.

- Choose an autosave interval that limits lost progress without creating unnecessary disk activity.
- Set an autosave count greater than one when you want more than the newest state available.
- Use the smart-retention option when age-based recovery points matter to your community.
- Back up the save directory before patching or other maintenance, even when autosaves are enabled.
- Keep at least one backup outside the live server directory so a failed update or disk problem cannot destroy every copy.
A backup is not proven until you can identify the files and restore them. Periodically copy a save to a separate location and document which folder the dedicated server uses. During an incident, stop the service before replacing live save files, then start it and confirm the world loads before allowing players back in.

ResetDaysInterval and DayOfReset control scheduled world resets, not routine process restarts. ResetDaysInterval defaults to 0, which disables the feature. Leave it disabled for ordinary maintenance. Enabling it as part of a restart script can produce a world reset when the intended action was only to recycle the server process.
If your community intentionally runs seasonal or periodic resets, document that schedule separately, announce it with its own player communication and take a manual backup first. Keep reset configuration out of the restart task so each operation can be reviewed and tested independently.
Verify recovery instead of assuming it
Players do not see the warning
- Confirm the RCON client connected to the correct host and port.
- Check that
Enabledis true and that the server was restarted after editingServerHostSettings.json. - Test
announcemanually; if it also fails, investigate credentials, firewall rules and the RCON listener rather than the scheduler.
The server stops but does not return
- Run the service or supervisor start action manually and inspect its log.
- Check that the account has permission to the executable, installation directory and save directory.
- Verify that the update step did not leave files locked, partially downloaded or incompatible.
- Make sure the supervisor is configured to start after a planned stop as well as after a crash.
The task runs at the wrong time
- Check the operating system’s time zone and the task’s trigger time.
- Confirm that the task account can run when no user is logged in.
- Use a temporary test trigger a few minutes ahead of time and watch the complete warning, stop and start cycle.
A shutdown was scheduled by mistake
Send cancelshutdown immediately through RCON, verify that players can remain connected, and disable the pending task before correcting its trigger or credentials. Do not force-kill the server to undo a command that can be cancelled cleanly.
Operational checklist
- RCON is enabled, protected by a non-empty unique password and restricted at the firewall.
- The warning command reaches an online test account.

With these controls in place, the restart becomes a predictable maintenance window rather than an unexplained disconnect: players receive a warning, the process exits cleanly, saves have recovery points, updates happen while the files are closed, and the supervisor brings the server back online.
