If an ARK: Survival Evolved server will not start, cannot be found, rejects players, lags, or crashes, troubleshoot in this order: confirm the server finished updating, inspect its logs, isolate mods and saves, verify the game and query ports, then test a direct connection. Most failures are caused by an incompatible mod, a damaged save, incomplete files, a browser filter, or a client/server version mismatch—not by the server being permanently offline.

The port defaults and mod requirements below apply to Survival Evolved. They are community-documented and can change with game updates, so recheck them after a major patch. ARK: Survival Ascended uses different launch-argument syntax.

Start with a controlled diagnosis
Change one thing at a time and record the result. Restarting repeatedly while changing mods, ports, and configuration together makes the original cause difficult to identify.
- Decide whether the process starts. A server that exits, freezes during initial loading, or never creates a listening process has a startup problem. A process that stays running but is absent from the browser has an advertising, filtering, version, or network problem.
- Check the build on both sides. Update the dedicated server and the player’s game, then restart both. A client and server on different versions may not appear compatible even when every port is correct.
- Read the server log. Look in
ShooterGame/Saved/Logs. Many rented hosts expose this directory through FTP or a web file manager; a self-hosted installation can be inspected locally or through SSH. - Remove variables. Temporarily run without recently added or updated mods, then restore them one at a time. Do the same with unusual launch arguments and configuration changes.
- Test locally or by direct address. If a direct connection works while the browser does not, focus on filters, query ports, master-list delay, or browser caching rather than the game process.
- Repair files only after preserving data. Back up saves and configuration before validating or reinstalling the server.
When the ARK server will not start
1. Isolate incompatible mods
Mods are the first startup suspect after a game patch. A mod built for an older build can stop the process during loading, produce repeated errors in the console, or leave the server apparently frozen. Remove all nonessential mods temporarily. If the server starts, add the mods back individually—or in small, documented groups—until the failure returns.

Update each failing mod to a version that supports the current game build. If no compatible version exists, leave it disabled and tell players to remove it from their clients as well. A client retaining an obsolete mod can still fail to join a clean server.
2. Check for a damaged save
A save can prevent startup even when the executable and mods are healthy. One common pattern is removing a mod that added an item, structure, or creature and then attempting to load a save that still references it. The log may show an asset, class, or serialization error rather than an obvious “save corrupted” message.

Start with the most recent known-good backup if one exists. If the server starts from that copy, the problem is in the newer save or in content it references; do not overwrite the only copy while experimenting.
3. Read the loading log instead of guessing
Open the newest files in ShooterGame/Saved/Logs and look at the final messages before the process exits or stops progressing. Search for the name of a mod, a missing package, a failed asset, a save file, or an access/permission error. The last line is not always the root cause, so compare it with the first warning or error in the same sequence.
4. Confirm that an update actually finished
After a major patch, SteamCMD may still be downloading or validating files when an automated host attempts to launch the server. Stop the process, allow the update to complete, and start it again. If the console appears to stall during the initial load, perform one clean restart after confirming that no update or file operation is still running. Repeated restarts without completing the update can leave the installation in the same state.

5. Check permissions and free space
The supplied troubleshooting reports emphasize mods, saves, and incomplete updates; ordinary operating-system checks are still worthwhile. Ensure the account running the server can write to the installation and ShooterGame/Saved directories, and confirm that the disk has room for an update, temporary files, and a new save. A log that stops at a write or access error points to this layer rather than to a port.

Browser filters can hide a healthy server
ARK advertises a server as password-protected when an admin password is configured. In the in-game browser, a filter that hides password-protected servers therefore hides your server even if players do not need a password to join. Clear that filter and search again.
New servers can take several minutes to appear in Steam’s master list. Wait after the process has started, refresh the list, and try a direct connection before changing configuration. A slow listing does not prove that the server is down.
Match the client and server versions
Update the player’s installation and the dedicated server to the same build. Restart the game after an update; a client that remained open while Steam downloaded a patch can continue running the old build. The server should also be restarted after its update so it advertises the new version.
Use direct connect to separate browser and network faults
Open the in-game console and enter:
open IP_ADDRESS:GAME_PORTFor the default game port, that is the public address followed by :7777. Direct connection bypasses the master-list search. If it succeeds, troubleshoot browser filters, query-port forwarding, and listing delay. If it fails, continue with the port, firewall, version, and server-process checks.

Forward the ports required by your layout
Self-hosted servers need router and firewall rules that send incoming traffic to the machine running ARK. The game port and query port are different services; forwarding only one can produce a server that is playable by a known address but absent from the browser, or visible but impossible to join.
Community forum reports say that forwarding UDP rather than both TCP and UDP fixed some connection problems. That is anecdotal, not a universal rule. Use the protocol shown in the port table below, remove duplicate or conflicting rules, and test from a network outside your home LAN. Old instructions that tell you to disable port forwarding altogether conflict with current network practice and should not be applied blindly.
ARK: Survival Evolved port reference

Do not place the query port in the 27020–27050 range, which Steam uses for other purposes. If you changed the game or query port in the server’s launch arguments, use those actual values in the router rule, firewall exception, browser search, and direct-connect command. A port-forward rule aimed at an old private IP will also fail after a router reassigns the server computer a new address; reserve the computer’s local address or update the rule.
Players cannot connect even though the server is visible
Verify the address and port
Give players the public IP address, not the server’s private address such as 192.168.x.x, unless they are on the same local network. Pair that address with the game port used by the server. A browser result can be stale, so have a player refresh and attempt a direct connection after the server has been running for several minutes.

Check firewall and router layers separately
There are usually three possible blocks: the server computer’s operating-system firewall, the router’s port-forward rule, and an upstream modem or carrier-grade NAT. Confirm that the rule points to the correct machine, uses UDP for 7777, 7778, and 27015, and is not shadowed by a second router. Temporarily test with a narrowly scoped firewall exception, then restore a least-privilege rule once the cause is known.

Rule out version and mod mismatches
A player can see a server and still fail during joining when the client build or required mod set differs. Have the player update ARK, restart Steam, and let every required mod finish downloading. On the server, remove a newly introduced mod and retest with a clean, known-compatible set.
Lag, rubber-banding, and crashes
Start with configuration and resources
Performance problems are commonly linked to configuration values that exceed the server’s available CPU, memory, storage throughput, or network capacity. Match configuration to the server’s population and map rather than copying settings intended for a larger machine. Check resource use while players reproduce the lag: sustained CPU saturation, exhausted memory, a full disk, or high disk wait points to infrastructure; normal resource use with crashes after a specific event points more strongly to content or a mod.
Find an unstable mod or plugin
Disable one suspected extension at a time and run long enough to reproduce the problem. If stability returns, restore the other extensions and test the suspect alone. Record its version and the game build before updating or replacing it. Removing several mods at once may make the server stable but does not identify which one caused the fault.
Separate network lag from simulation lag
If every player freezes together while the server console reports a stall or a resource spike, investigate the server process and configuration. If only players on one route or region experience delay while the process remains healthy, investigate latency, packet loss, or the host’s network path. A browser listing or successful login does not guarantee a good route during play.

Update or reinstall the dedicated server with SteamCMD
The dedicated server’s Steam application ID is 376030. A typical SteamCMD update uses an anonymous login and an app update command:

steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir /path/to/arkserver +app_update 376030 validate +quitReplace the installation path with the actual server directory. Stop ARK first, back up ShooterGame/Saved and configuration files, run the update or validation, and start the server only after SteamCMD reports completion. If validation cannot repair the installation, move the old binaries aside and install a fresh copy, then restore saves and configuration carefully rather than copying unknown broken files over the new installation.
Verify the player’s client files
For a player-side loading or joining problem, use Steam’s built-in file verification for ARK. Verification repairs missing or altered client files; it does not fix a server’s save, port forwarding, or incompatible server mod. After verification, restart Steam and allow workshop content to finish updating.
“App ID specified by server is invalid”
This Steam join error has been reported in ARK and in other games, including Conan Exiles and 7 Days to Die. Reports associate it with Steam’s client-side join flow rather than proving that SteamCMD installed the wrong application or that the target server is offline. There is no confirmed official Studio Wildcard or Valve fix in the available guidance.
Two user-reported workarounds are:
- Add the server to Steam’s Game Servers favourites, then join it from that list.
- Open a link in this form, replacing the address and port with the server’s public values:
steam://run/346110//+connect ADDRESS:PORT/These are unverified workarounds, not guaranteed repairs. Confirm the server is actually running, the player is using the current client build, and the address includes the correct game port before treating the message as a Steam-only fault.
Self-hosting versus rented hosting for troubleshooting

A recovery sequence that minimizes downtime
- Announce a maintenance window and copy the save and configuration directories.
- Record the ARK build, server launch arguments, map, ports, and active mods.
- Stop the server and complete any pending SteamCMD update.
- Start with mods disabled. Inspect
ShooterGame/Saved/Logs. - If it still fails, test a known-good save backup. Preserve the failing save for later analysis.
- Once the process remains stable, restore mods one at a time and watch the log.
- Verify the port table, router forwarding, host firewall, and private-IP target.
- Clear password-protected-server filters, wait for listing propagation, and test
open IP_ADDRESS:GAME_PORT. - Ask a player on another network to test. A local test alone can be fooled by NAT loopback behavior.
- If files remain suspect, validate with SteamCMD using app ID
376030; validate the player’s client separately through Steam.
Version and evidence limits
Port defaults, browser behavior, Steam’s join flow, and mod compatibility are volatile. Survival Ascended is a different game: its launch syntax uses -port=<port>, whereas instructions for Survival Evolved commonly use ?port=<port>. Do not copy an Ascended command into an Evolved installation without checking the current documentation for that game.
Community reports are useful for identifying patterns but are not guarantees. In particular, the UDP-only forwarding report and the Steam URI workaround have not been established as universal solutions. No published statistic reliably states how often ARK servers fail, and no official staff quotation establishes a single cause for these problems. When a fix depends on a specific patch, mod version, host, or network topology, confirm it against the build you are running.
The practical verdict is straightforward: get the process healthy without mods, prove the save loads, verify the four relevant ports and version alignment, then reintroduce complexity one item at a time. That sequence distinguishes a dead server from a hidden listing and turns most “ARK server won’t start” or “server not responding” incidents into a testable, reversible repair.
