The quickest way to join an Arma Reforger roleplay server is Multiplayer > Server Browser: filter for a suitable community, read its rules and entry requirements, then let the game acquire any required Workshop mods. To host, use Multiplayer > Host tab > Host new server for a small PC-only session, or run a dedicated server for a persistent public community. A home host normally must forward public port 2001 on the router. Xbox and PlayStation 5 players can join community servers, but a PC must provide player-hosting or the dedicated-server process.

What an Arma Reforger roleplay server is
Roleplay (RP) servers use Arma Reforger’s multiplayer framework to give a community a persistent set of rules, characters, missions and moderation standards. The game itself does not impose one universal RP format. The selected server determines the scenario, mod collection, access policy, restart routine and the amount of improvisation expected from players.

Arma Reforger has two hosting modes:
- Player-hosted (listen) server: a player starts the session from the game and also plays in it. Official documentation states that this mode is available only on PC.
- Dedicated server: a separate server process runs the game simulation and network synchronization without requiring a local player to remain in the match. It can run on your own hardware or through a third-party hosting provider.
That distinction matters more than the server’s name. A listen server is convenient for a few friends but disappears when the host stops playing. A dedicated server can support scheduled events, published rules and a community that expects the same address to be available every day.
How to find and join an RP server
- Open the browser. Launch Arma Reforger, choose Multiplayer, then open Server Browser.
- Narrow the list. Use the available filters for region, player count, scenario, language and vanilla or modded sessions. Filtering first reduces the chance of joining a server whose time zone, connection distance or play style does not fit you.
- Inspect the listing. Read the server name and description. Look for a rules page, community site or Discord invitation, plus information about applications, whitelist status, age limits, required training or scheduled restarts. These are community policies, not universal Bohemia Interactive requirements.
- Check the scenario and mods. A server may advertise a roleplay concept but use a very different scenario or mod set from another server. Note whether the listing says vanilla, lightly modded or heavily modded, and whether the administrators publish an update policy.
- Join and acquire content. Select the server and choose to connect. If it requires Workshop content, allow Arma Reforger to download and activate the required mods. The official Workshop workflow supports acquiring content as part of joining a server that requires it.
- Complete any community onboarding. If the server requires verification, an application, a whitelist approval or an orientation, follow the instructions shown in its current community channels. Approval can be separate from the in-game connection attempt.
- Read the rules before acting in character. Learn rules for voice communication, identification, combat escalation, medical play, looting, vehicle use, safe zones, metagaming and reporting. Ask a moderator where the current rules are if the listing is unclear.
Server descriptions, restart times, wipe schedules, moderator contacts and whitelist decisions can change. Treat the community’s current page or announcement channel as authoritative rather than relying on an old screenshot or a remembered schedule.

Workshop mods: what you need to know
Arma Reforger’s official Workshop is the distribution point for community modifications. A server can require a collection of mods, and a player can obtain those files through the join process. You do not need to search for each item manually when the server browser presents the required content, although a large collection can take time to download and update.
Before joining a modded server
- Allow enough storage for the collection and future updates.
- Use a stable connection; interrupting an update can leave a mod incomplete or out of date.
- Read the server’s mod list and update policy. Some communities pause play while a critical mod is being tested; others update immediately.
- Keep a vanilla filter available if you want an unmodified session. Bohemia’s mod guidance documents using filters to find vanilla servers.
When a modded join fails
Compare the browser’s required list with the content installed on your system. Restart the game after a major Workshop update, then try the connection again. If the server has just changed versions, wait for the administrator’s announcement rather than repeatedly joining with a mismatched collection. A server-side mod problem cannot be repaired entirely from your client.

Use player-hosting when one PC owner will play in the session and the group is small enough to tolerate that machine and connection being the host. The official in-game path is:
- Open Multiplayer.
- Select the Host tab.
- Choose Host new server.
- Select the scenario and its source.
- Enable the Workshop mods required by the roleplay scenario.
- Set a password if the session should be limited to invited players.
- Start the server and share the listing details and password through your private community channel.
Player-hosting is PC-only. The host’s computer runs the game and the server responsibilities together, so performance and connection quality depend on what that machine and its internet service can sustain while the host is playing.

Make a home-hosted session reachable from the internet
Friends on the same home network may connect without the same router changes required by internet players. For an internet-visible session, configure port forwarding on the router. Bohemia’s private-hosting guidance identifies public port 2001 as Arma Reforger’s default and says the range should be forwarded on both the public and local sides. Use the exact port and range shown by the current hosting documentation and your server configuration; do not substitute a random port because it appears unused.
The practical sequence is:
- Give the host PC a predictable local address, using a router reservation if your router supports it.
- Create a forwarding rule for the documented public port and the host PC’s local address. Apply the same range on the public and local fields when the router asks for both.
- Allow Arma Reforger and the dedicated or game process through the operating system firewall when prompted.
- Start the host and have a player outside your home network test the listing.
- If the test fails, verify the router’s external address, the forwarding target, firewall status and the port shown in the server configuration.
Do not expose administrative interfaces or share an administrator password in a public chat. Forward only the game traffic required by the current documentation.

Use the host’s password option for an invitation-only game. Share the password privately and change it if it spreads beyond the intended group. A password controls entry; it does not replace community rules or moderator supervision once players are inside.
Troubleshooting a home-hosted server
The server does not appear in the browser
- Confirm that the host actually started the session from Multiplayer > Host > Host new server.
- Check that the router forwards the documented public port to the correct local PC and that the local firewall permits the game.
- Restart the router rule and the game after changing a port or local address.
- Have a player on a different network search again; a test from the same LAN may not prove internet visibility.
Players see the server but cannot connect
Recheck the password, scenario and required Workshop content. Confirm that the host and clients are on compatible game and mod versions. Review registration and configuration values rather than deleting them: the hosting documentation warns that missing or modified registration values can prevent external connections or BattlEye operation.

Players disconnect or experience poor performance
Reduce competing traffic on the host connection, close unnecessary applications and test with fewer players. A listen server shares resources with the host’s game, so a dedicated process or provider may be the appropriate next step when the community outgrows a private session.
How to host a persistent public RP community
A dedicated server is the practical choice when a community expects an always-on address, scheduled events or rules that should remain available independently of one player’s gaming session. The process is more involved than clicking Host new server, but it separates server uptime from the host’s personal play time.

Select local hardware you can maintain, or a verified third-party provider whose location, support and networking meet your audience’s needs. - Install the stable dedicated-server application. Keep the server branch aligned with the game version used by your clients. A client update that arrives before the server or its mods can create a temporary compatibility gap.
- Create the configuration. Define the scenario, server name, join-password policy, administrator settings and Workshop mod list. Keep required registration and anti-cheat values intact.
- Configure networking and firewall rules. Open only the game ports required by the server documentation and your provider or operating system. On local hardware, this includes the router and host firewall; a provider normally supplies a public address but still requires its firewall rules to be correct.
- Test privately. Connect with a small group, confirm that every required mod downloads, test administrator login and verify that a restart returns the server to the intended scenario and settings.
- Publish useful information. Use a clear server name and description. State the roleplay premise, language, region, mod collection, application or whitelist steps, restart schedule, wipe policy and moderation contact.
- Operate it as a service. Monitor updates, mod compatibility, logs, backups, bandwidth and moderation. Schedule maintenance announcements before changing a major mod or scenario.
Provider features, data-center locations, backup options and prices change over time. Verify those details on the provider’s current service page before committing; the game documentation does not establish one universal specification or fee.

Choose player-hosting when convenience matters more than uptime and everyone accepts that the host is part of the infrastructure. Choose dedicated hosting when your community needs a stable address, regular events or moderators who can manage the server without waiting for one player to launch the game.

PC, Xbox and PlayStation 5 roles
Player-hosting is available only on PC. Bohemia’s private-hosting guidance says Xbox and PlayStation 5 players can join official and community servers. Therefore, a console-inclusive RP community needs a PC to provide the player-hosted session or the dedicated-server process; a console cannot replace that host role.

When advertising a cross-platform community, state the supported client platforms, required voice or text channels and any control or communication expectations. Test the exact scenario and mod collection with representatives of each platform before opening a public event.

Server configuration supports a join password, an administrator password and administrator login through the in-game command interface. Give administrative access only to trusted moderators, store credentials privately and change them when staff membership changes.
Keep registration and anti-cheat-related configuration values exactly as required. The hosting documentation warns that changing or omitting required values can stop BattlEye or external connections. If a server suddenly loses visibility or rejects connections after an edit, compare the file with a known-good configuration and restore required values before changing gameplay settings again.

A practical moderator policy
- Publish one current rules document and a clear escalation path.
- Record warnings, kicks and bans with timestamps and a short reason.
- Separate in-character disputes from out-of-character technical or safety reports.
- Announce restarts, wipes and major mod changes before they occur.
- Keep a backup of the configuration and the community’s whitelist or application records.
Designing a roleplay server players will return to
Technology gets players through the door; consistent administration determines whether they stay. Define the intended experience before selecting mods. A serious military simulation, civilian-life scenario and light improvisational server require different rules and moderation workload.
Write the premise and boundaries
State who players are, what period or fictional setting applies, how characters acquire equipment, when combat is justified and what behavior breaks immersion. Explain whether voice roleplay is mandatory, how unconscious or captured players are handled and whether out-of-character communication is restricted during an event.
Keep the mod set understandable
List every required Workshop item, its purpose and the update policy. Avoid adding a mod merely because it is popular if administrators cannot test it after updates. Provide a fallback vanilla or lightly modded event when a critical dependency is unavailable.
Plan the operating rhythm
Publish restart times, event windows, maintenance notices and wipe criteria. A predictable schedule lets players plan around the server instead of guessing whether it will be online. Assign responsibility for moderation, technical maintenance and player onboarding rather than leaving every task to one owner.
Costs, requirements and practical limits
Player-hosting has no separate hosting fee when you use an existing PC and connection, but it consumes that machine’s resources and depends on the home’s upload capacity and router configuration. A dedicated server requires either hardware you maintain or a recurring provider charge. The exact price, location, backup policy and support level depend on the provider and current offer, so they must be checked at the time of purchase.
Regardless of mode, plan for:
- A PC for player-hosting or the dedicated-server process.
- Sufficient storage for the base game, Workshop collection and updates.
- Reliable internet service and firewall access.
- Time for version, mod and configuration maintenance.
- A rules and moderation process appropriate to the intended player count.
No published authoritative statistic establishes a universal player population, retention rate, latency target or success rate for Arma Reforger RP servers. Evaluate a community by its current activity, administration and technical consistency rather than by an unsupported numerical promise.
