Arma Reforger server administration is configured in config.json. Use game.passwordAdmin for a shared in-game password, game.admins for up to 20 trusted Identity IDs or Steam IDs that can log in without a password, and the rcon object for remote administration. Stop the server before changing the file, save a backup, restart it, and test the account with #login before giving anyone access.

What controls Arma Reforger administration?
The server’s config.json contains both the game settings and the rcon block. The current field name for the shared administrator password is game.passwordAdmin. Older documentation may call it adminPassword; that name was renamed and moved inside the game object.

There are two ways to authorize an in-game administrator:
- Shared password: a player enters
#login <password>in chat or the console. - Configured account: a player ID listed in
game.adminscan use#loginwithout supplying a password.
The server owner represented by ownerToken.bin can also use administrator commands without a password. Treat that file as another credential and protect it like the configuration password.

Prepare the server before editing config.json
- Stop the Arma Reforger server cleanly. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten when the server saves its settings.
- Make a dated copy of
config.jsonand, if present,ownerToken.bin. Keep the backup outside the live server directory. - Open the file in a text editor that preserves UTF-8 text and standard JSON punctuation. Do not add comments or trailing commas.
- After editing, validate that the file is valid JSON before starting the server. A missing quote or comma can prevent startup or cause a setting to be ignored.
- Restart the server and watch its startup log for configuration errors. Join with a test account before distributing credentials.
Set a shared admin password with game.passwordAdmin
Add or change passwordAdmin inside the game object. The value cannot contain spaces. In-game, enter it as #login password; replace password with the exact value you configured.

- Join the server with the account that should receive administrative access.
- Open the in-game chat or command entry and type
#login R3forgerAdminKey. - Run a harmless command such as
#playersto confirm that the login succeeded. - When finished, type
#logouton a shared or public machine.
Use a long, random value even though the game only requires that the password contain no spaces. Do not paste it into public chat, screenshots, stream overlays or server announcements. A shared password grants the same authority to every person who knows it, so remove or rotate it when staff changes.

Add named administrators with game.admins
game.admins is an array of player identifiers. It accepts Identity IDs and/or Steam IDs, and the documented limit is 20 unique IDs. Every entry must be a quoted JSON string. A configured administrator can use #login without a password.

Do not enter an unquoted number, a display name or a nickname. If an entry fails, check the spelling, quote marks and whether the identifier belongs to the account that is trying to log in.

Adding an administrator safely
- Stop the server and back up
config.json. - Locate the existing
gameobject. If anadminsarray already exists, append a new quoted ID after the previous value and separate entries with commas. - Keep the array at 20 or fewer unique IDs. Remove an old entry rather than adding a 21st.
- Validate the JSON, save the file and restart the server.
- Have the newly listed player join and enter
#login. Then test a low-impact command.
Configured IDs and the owner represented by ownerToken.bin do not need the shared password. A player who is not listed must use the shared password, assuming one is configured.
Configure RCON for remote administration
The rcon object defines the remote address, port, password and permission level. A password must contain at least three characters and no spaces. The community wiki describes two permission values:

}The port value 19999 is commonly shown in third-party setup material, but it is not confirmed here as a universal default for every current build or hosting environment. Use the port actually assigned by your host, expose only that port in the firewall, and avoid binding RCON to a public interface unless remote access is required. If your host supplies a different address or port, those values take precedence.
RCON security checklist
- Use a separate RCON password rather than reusing
passwordAdmin. - Use
monitorfor read-only tooling and reserveadminfor people who must execute state-changing commands. - Restrict inbound access with the host firewall or an allowlist of administrator IP addresses where available.
- Change the password after staff turnover or an accidental disclosure.
- Do not publish the RCON endpoint, password or owner token in community documentation.
Arma Reforger admin commands
The following commands appear in third-party guides aimed at the 1.7-era game. They are useful starting points, but command names and permissions are volatile and have not been confirmed against an official current command reference. Test them on a private server before using them during a live event.

RCON ban-list pages in the same third-party material show 25 entries per page, compared with 10 entries in-game. Because this paging behavior is not established as a current official contract, scripts should handle an error or changed page size rather than assuming either number.

Whitelist editing is a file-and-restart operation. The documented procedure is:
- Stop the server.
- Open
config.jsonand add the player’s entry to the whitelist field used by your current server schema. - Save and validate the JSON, keeping every identifier as the type and quoting style expected by that schema.
- Restart the server and test with one account that is listed and one that is not.
The exact whitelist field and identifier format can vary with the server build and hosting panel. Do not copy a field name from an older guide without checking the configuration generated by your installed version. A whitelist change that is syntactically valid but placed in the wrong object will have no effect.
Troubleshoot failed logins and ignored settings
#login says the password is wrong
- Confirm the value is under
game.passwordAdmin, not a top-leveladminPasswordfield from older documentation. - Check for spaces before or after the password and remember that the configured value itself cannot contain spaces.
- Make sure the server was stopped before saving and restarted afterward.
- Type the command with the leading
#and no angle brackets:#login YourActualPassword. - Rotate the password if you suspect it was exposed rather than trying to preserve a compromised credential.
A listed administrator cannot log in without a password
- Verify the account’s exact Identity ID or Steam ID, including every digit and letter.
- Ensure the ID is enclosed in quotation marks inside the
adminsarray. - Check that the array is inside
gameand that it contains no more than 20 unique entries. - Confirm that the edited file is the live server’s
config.json, not a local client copy or an old backup. - Restart and inspect startup logs for a JSON parsing or configuration warning.
RCON will not connect
- Confirm the client is using the configured address, port and RCON password, with no spaces in the password.
- Check that the firewall allows the selected port and that the server is listening on the intended interface.
- Use the permission value
adminormonitor; other labels may come from an older or unofficial guide. - Test locally first, then test from the remote network. A local success followed by a remote failure usually indicates routing or firewall policy.
- Review the server log after each restart for an RCON initialization error.

Version and documentation cautions
Configuration names, command lists, permission behavior and ban-list paging can change between Arma Reforger builds. The passwordAdmin field and the 20-ID administrator limit are documented facts for the versions covered by the available references, while the command list and the commonly cited port 19999 come from third-party material. Recheck the generated configuration and startup log after game updates, and test administrative commands on a maintenance instance before relying on them in production.
