Armed Police Batrider has two separate difficulty controls: Start Rank sets how hard a credit is when it begins, while Timer Rank controls how quickly the difficulty rises during play. Both are four-position settings on DIP-SW2, and both use all switches OFF for Normal.
The settings below come from the Raizing/Eighting arcade operator manual. They describe cabinet configuration, not a universal player menu. Your emulator, home port, board revision, or regional ROM may expose different options, so identify the exact version before assuming that every feature is available.

What Start Rank and Timer Rank actually change
It is easy to treat the two rank controls as a single easy-to-hard scale, but they affect different parts of a credit. Start Rank determines the opening challenge. Timer Rank determines the rate at which the challenge increases as the game continues.

For example, an operator can leave Start Rank at Normal but choose a higher Timer Rank. That produces a conventional opening while making the later increase in difficulty more aggressive. Conversely, a lower Timer Rank does not make the first stage begin at Easy; it only slows the increase after the credit is underway.

How operators are expected to use the controls
The manual frames these settings around the length of a customer’s play session. If credits last too long, it recommends increasing the difficulty-increase rate with Timer Rank. If credits end too quickly, it recommends lowering that rate. Start Rank is the control to consider when the opening challenge itself is inappropriate for the audience.
How to set the arcade DIP switches
These are physical operator settings on the arcade hardware. The exact switch-bank location and the direction marked “ON” can vary by cabinet documentation, so use the board’s own service information rather than relying on a generic picture of another revision.
- Identify the board and ROM revision. Confirm whether you have an original Japanese release, Japanese B Version, a regional board, or an emulated driver. Regional and revision differences affect more than difficulty settings.
- Open the board’s test or operator documentation. Locate DIP-SW2 and verify the switch numbering. The two rank controls use switches 1–4 in two pairs.
- Choose Start Rank with switches 1–2. Set the pair to OFF/OFF for Normal, ON/OFF for Easy, OFF/ON for Hard, or ON/ON for Very Hard.
- Choose Timer Rank with switches 3–4. Set the pair to OFF/OFF for Normal, ON/OFF for Low, OFF/ON for High, or ON/ON for Highest.
- Record the complete profile. Write down both rank pairs along with unit count and extra-player settings. A cabinet can feel dramatically different because of those other settings even when both rank pairs match.
- Start a test credit. Check that the opening challenge reflects the selected Start Rank and that the later increase matches the intended Timer Rank. If the result does not match the switch positions, stop and verify the board or ROM revision before changing more settings.
Do not change only one pair and describe the result as simply “Easy Batrider” or “Hard Batrider.” A complete description needs both axes: the starting challenge and the growth rate.
The documented default setup
The operator manual’s all-OFF configuration is the baseline cabinet setup. In that profile, Start Rank and Timer Rank are both Normal. The same documented default also gives three fighter units and one extra player at each 1,500,000 points.

That matters when comparing two machines. If one cabinet grants fewer units or makes the first extra player harder to earn, its credits may feel shorter even with identical rank settings. Record the full configuration instead of comparing the two rank names alone.
Fighter units and extra-player thresholds
The manual treats unit count and score extends as separate operator choices. They change how many attempts a player receives and when additional attempts are awarded, independently of Start Rank and Timer Rank.

For a public cabinet, these choices can be used to tune credit length without altering the game’s rank curve. A lower unit count or a higher score threshold reduces the safety margin available to inexperienced players. More units or more frequent extends can make a credit last longer even when Timer Rank is unchanged.

This list should not be read as a promise that every item exists on every physical board. Later hardware may place configuration in a Test or Service Menu instead of physical DIP switches. In an emulator, the driver’s configuration screen may combine board settings, cheats, and convenience features that were not presented in the same way on an original cabinet.
Difficulty settings versus cheats and convenience features
Start Rank, Timer Rank, unit count, and score thresholds are operator-balancing controls. Invulnerability is listed separately as a cheat, while service, credit, screen, and sound choices are machine configuration. Keeping those categories separate makes it easier to reproduce an arcade setup accurately and to explain why two emulator profiles behave differently.
Ship selection is a separate gameplay layer
MAME’s driver documentation also describes player-facing ship-selection behavior. The selection button changes ship characteristics, including shot and option power, speed, and the default autofire rate. Those choices are not alternate names for Start Rank or Timer Rank.

The driver comments describe the original game as marketed for two buttons while noting that the original version needs a third button to control hidden-ship options in Battle Garegga. The Japanese B Version adds joystick-command support for cabinets that do not have that third button. This is a control and unlock distinction, not a change to the two DIP-SW2 rank pairs.

Regional and revision differences
Version identification is essential because Batrider was distributed in several regional and revision variants. MAME lists Europe, USA, China, Japan, and Korea variants, along with earlier Japanese and Taiwan releases.

The regional notes do not establish that every variant changes Start Rank or Timer Rank. They do establish that hidden features, button requirements, and in-game options can differ. Label the exact board or ROM whenever you document a cabinet, emulator preset, or strategy that depends on a version-specific feature.

If new players are abandoning credits early
Keep the opening challenge in mind first. Start Rank is the setting that directly changes the initial difficulty. You can also review unit count and extra-player thresholds, because those determine how much recovery opportunity a player has. Timer Rank should be adjusted separately if the problem is a later spike rather than the first part of a credit.

The manual’s recommended lever is Timer Rank. Increase the difficulty-increase rate rather than automatically raising Start Rank. This preserves a familiar opening while shortening very long sessions through a faster rise in challenge.

If you want a reproducible training profile
Write down Start Rank, Timer Rank, fighter-unit count, extra-player threshold, continue policy, and the exact ROM revision. Also note ship-selection and button behavior. A profile that records only “Normal difficulty” cannot be reproduced reliably because Normal describes two separate rank controls.
Home ports and emulators
A community gameplay reference identifies the first home port as the Sega Astro City Mini V release in 2022. That fact does not show that the home version exposes the arcade DIP switches or uses the same labels. Treat the home port as its own platform and check its own menu or manual before describing Start Rank, Timer Rank, unit count, or hidden options as available there.
Emulators add another qualification. A driver may expose physical DIP settings, a Test/Service Menu, player-facing options, and cheats in one interface. Use the actual driver documentation for the selected ROM set, and do not assume that a setting visible in one regional entry applies to another.
Common mistakes when comparing Batrider settings
- Calling Timer Rank an opening-difficulty control. It governs the rate of increase, not the initial setting.
- Reporting only one rank pair. Start Rank and Timer Rank must both be recorded.
- Ignoring units and score extends. Those options can change credit length independently of rank.
- Assuming every version has the same unlock method. The Japanese B Version and Korean B Version have documented differences.
- Confusing ship selection with cabinet difficulty. Ship characteristics and autofire behavior are player-facing choices, separate from DIP-SW2.
- Assuming a home port mirrors the arcade board. The 2022 home release is documented as a port, but equivalent DIP exposure is not established.
A compact checklist for documenting a setup
- Record the region, revision, and ROM set.
- Record DIP-SW2 switches 1–2 as the Start Rank setting.
- Record DIP-SW2 switches 3–4 as the Timer Rank setting.
- Record fighter-unit count and extra-player threshold.
- Record continue, credit, and service-menu choices when using MAME or another emulator.
- Record ship-selection controls and whether a third button or joystick command is required for hidden options.
- Test a credit and compare the opening challenge with the later difficulty rise.
With those details captured, “difficulty” becomes a precise configuration description rather than a vague label. The key distinction remains simple: Start Rank sets where the game begins, and Timer Rank sets how quickly it gets harder.
