Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is a good entry point to FromSoftware’s mech-action series: its story stands alone, its missions are built around a clear cycle of mech assembly and combat, and its official starter guide is aimed at newcomers as well as veterans. That does not make it easy. The game’s fast, multidirectional fights and demanding boss encounters can require you to rethink your build and tactics.
What kind of game is Armored Core VI?
Developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco, Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon is a mech action game set on Rubicon 3. You play an independent mercenary caught up in a conflict between corporations and local resistance groups over Coral. The story is standalone, so you do not need to know earlier Armored Core games to follow it. Bandai Namco’s official game page describes the premise and customization system.
The central loop is part workshop, part battlefield. Bandai Namco’s starter guide calls it “a game of two halves: assembly and combat.” You build an Armored Core from parts and weapons, then take that setup into missions. Components can change your mech’s maneuverability as well as how it fights, so assembly is not merely cosmetic: it is one way to solve a combat problem.
Is Armored Core VI approachable for newcomers?
Yes, in the sense that it gives newcomers a clean starting point and useful ways to learn. You can begin with a self-contained story, consult an official guide written for first-time pilots and returning players, and adjust your mech rather than relying on knowledge of previous games. Those are meaningful on-ramps, not promises that the missions will be forgiving.

#1 Best Overall
- A new action experience from the makers of Dark Souls and Elden Ring
- Assemble and pilot your own mech
- 3D maneuverability to move freely through three-dimensional fast-paced missions
- Take on difficult challenges and overwhelm your enemies
- Infiltrate Rubicon as an independent mercenary
The combat has tactical systems to learn. An official PlayStation Blog interview describes ground and aerial mobility, including chaining an Assault Boost with ranged fire and a melee strike. It also explains stagger: landing enough impact overloads an enemy’s Attitude Control System, briefly leaving it vulnerable. Learning when to move, attack, and exploit that opening gives the action a rhythm beyond simply firing continuously.
That rhythm may take time to click. GameSpot’s August 2023 review judged the game the series’ most approachable to that point, while also noting erratic difficulty spikes and challenging bosses. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee of how every player will experience it. In practice, approachability and challenge coexist: you can enter without series expertise, but a tough encounter may still call for a different loadout or approach.
Is Armored Core VI as hard as Elden Ring?
There is no direct, objective difficulty comparison established by the sources here, and the two games ask for different skills. FromSoftware told PlayStation Blog that mech-piloting action differs fundamentally in pace and structure from the studio’s other games. Expect fast, three-dimensional combat, with movement through the air and across the ground—not simply an Elden Ring-style challenge with mechs substituted for swords.
If your concern is whether you need to arrive with Soulslike experience, the answer is no: the story is independent, and the combat is built around mech mobility, weapon choices, and stagger. If your concern is whether you will hit demanding fights, the answer is yes. The GameSpot review’s report of difficulty spikes is a useful warning, especially for players who do not enjoy experimenting with builds when a tactic stops working.
