Valve offers two versions, Artifact Classic and Artifact Foundry, with different lane and mana systems.
What are Artifact cards?
Artifact is a digital strategy card game developed by Valve in collaboration with designer Richard Garfield. It is available as Artifact Classic, the original design, and Artifact Foundry, a revised version. Cards are used within the games; Valve’s official descriptions do not identify a physical Artifact deck, booster packs, or related accessories.
Valve’s Steam listing for Artifact describes both versions and their card systems.
How do Artifact Classic and Foundry differ?
The clearest distinction is how the three combat lanes are presented and how mana is managed. Valve characterizes Foundry as a version that also reduces the effect of randomness on gameplay.

| Feature | Artifact Classic | Artifact Foundry |
|---|---|---|
| Lane layout | The original design, built around three lanes. | All three lanes are visible at the same time, according to Valve. |
| Mana | Not stated in the cited official descriptions. | A unified mana pool is shared across lanes, according to Valve. |
| Randomness | The cited official descriptions do not specify a comparison figure. | Valve says the design reduces the degree to which randomness affects gameplay. |
| Content | The original card set. | Valve’s Steam description lists over 100 new cards, including over 20 new heroes; it gives no publication year for that wording. |
Foundry’s all-lanes-at-once presentation and shared mana pool change the way players assess the board across lanes. The Steam description summarizes these features with the phrases “All 3 lanes are in view at the same time” and “Unified mana pool across lanes.”
Are Artifact cards free to access?
Valve describes both versions as free. Its Steam listing says all Classic cards are available to players, while Foundry cards are unlocked through gameplay rather than pack purchases. Valve’s official announcement on March 4, 2021, explains that the two versions were made available after Artifact’s move to free access.

The official sources describe cards as digital game content and do not establish a physical Artifact deck, booster pack, or title-specific card accessory. If you are looking for Artifact cards, the supported route is to play Classic or Foundry through Steam; the available information does not support a physical-card shopping recommendation.
