The 60-second answer
- Open Norton and run LiveUpdate until it reports that the product is current.
- Restart Windows.
- If the error remains, use Norton’s official Remove and Reinstall tool.
- Choose Remove & Reinstall, restart when prompted, and reinstall Norton from your Norton account or its official installer.
- If the file disappeared after a security scan, inspect quarantine before restoring anything.
- Do not copy
asfilter.dlltoSystem32or runregsvr32as a routine fix.
Historical Norton installations placed the file inside a versioned Norton Engine directory, for example under a path similar to:
C:Program FilesNorton Internet SecurityNorton Internet SecurityEngine<version>asFilter.dll
That location is important. A copy found in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory should not automatically be trusted.
What causes the error
asfilter.dll was shipped with Norton AntiSpam and older Norton products including Norton Internet Security and Norton 360. Norton AntiSpam was also used as a feature within broader Norton security products rather than remaining a modern standalone Windows component.
The usual causes are:
- A Norton update was interrupted or left mixed-version files.
- Norton was only partly removed.
- An antivirus product quarantined the DLL.
- Disk cleanup deleted part of the Norton installation.
- A startup item, mail plug-in, or shortcut still requests Norton after Norton was uninstalled.
- The DLL is present but one of its dependencies is missing.
- A damaged user profile or application configuration is loading an old Norton component.
- Windows component corruption is affecting the program that launches Norton.
- Malware or disk problems modified or removed security software files.
The most likely cause is an incomplete or damaged Norton installation. Repair Norton before attempting general Windows repairs.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix 1: Run Norton LiveUpdate, then restart
Norton updates can replace damaged product files and correct errors caused by an incomplete program update.
- Open the Norton application from the Start menu or notification area.
- In the Norton window, select LiveUpdate.
- Allow the update process to finish.
- Run LiveUpdate again if Norton reports that more updates are available.
- Continue until Norton reports that it is current.
- Restart Windows, even if Norton does not explicitly request it.
- Start the program that previously displayed the
asfilter.dllmessage.
How to tell whether it worked
The repair succeeded if the requesting application starts normally and the error does not return after a restart. Do not judge the result only by whether you can see a file with that name. Norton may install a replacement inside a different versioned directory.
If LiveUpdate fails, will not open, or completes without changing the error, continue with a complete Norton removal and reinstall.
Fix 2: Use Norton Remove and Reinstall
This is the primary fix for a missing or damaged Norton-owned DLL. Norton’s Remove and Reinstall tool removes the installed Norton product and allows it to be installed again from an official Norton source.
Before starting, save open work and make sure you can sign in to the Norton account associated with the subscription.

- Open the downloaded tool.

- If Windows displays a User Account Control prompt, select Yes.
- Choose Remove & Reinstall, not only Remove, unless you deliberately want Norton removed.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows when requested.
- Allow the tool to reinstall Norton, or download the current Norton installer from your Norton account.
- Sign in and complete activation if Norton requests it.
- Restart Windows again.
- Open the application that reported
asfilter.dll.
Do not copy an old DLL back into the new installation. A Norton installation contains related files that must match each other. Replacing only one file can leave the same error in place or create a version mismatch.
If Norton is no longer wanted
If Norton has already been removed but an old program still requests asfilter.dll, the error may come from a leftover startup entry, mail integration component, scheduled task, or shortcut.
First identify the requesting program. Then uninstall that remaining Norton product normally through Windows:

- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Norton.
- Select each Norton product you no longer use.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
If the error appears during startup after Norton has been removed, open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and disable only an entry that clearly belongs to the removed Norton installation. Do not disable an unknown item merely because its name looks unfamiliar.
If a stale entry remains, reinstalling the Norton product and then removing it with its normal uninstaller can be cleaner than deleting files manually.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
If the error appeared immediately after a security scan, the DLL may have been quarantined. A quarantine event does not prove that the detection was a false positive.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Open any detection associated with the Norton installation.
- Record the detection name, original path, date, and action.
Do not select Allow on device simply because Norton stopped working. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause it to be detected again.
The safer sequence is:
- Record the detection details.
- Confirm that the Norton installation came from an official Norton source.
- Update Windows Security and Norton.
- Remove and reinstall Norton using Norton’s official tool.
- Run another scan.
- Contact Norton support if the newly installed file is immediately detected again.
A legitimate asfilter.dll should normally be located with Norton’s own files. A file with the same name in a temporary folder, an email attachment location, a startup directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves additional investigation.
Fix 4: Check whether a dependency is missing
The wording “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that asfilter.dll itself is absent. Windows can display that message when a dependency required by the DLL cannot be loaded.

This is another reason not to download a replacement file at random. The downloaded copy may be present while the actual missing dependency remains unresolved.
Repair Norton first. If the error persists after a clean reinstall:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Write down the complete error text.
- Record the executable that displays it.
- Note the full path of that executable.
- Check whether the error occurs only when a particular mail client starts.
- Check Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor for an entry at the same time.
- Give Norton Support the event details and the installed Norton version.
Do not install a Visual C++ Redistributable package as a general response to this error. Consider one only if the message separately names a Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll, or if Norton Support identifies that dependency. Microsoft provides architecture-specific Visual C++ packages, so installing the wrong architecture can also fail to resolve the problem.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
asfilter.dll is a third-party Norton file, so System File Checker normally will not recreate it. DISM and SFC are appropriate when Windows itself has damaged components or when other Windows files are also failing.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
Run the commands in that order. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source.
What the results mean
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not find damaged protected files. Continue with Norton repair.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Review the result, run DISM again if necessary, restart, and contact support if the issue continues.
SFC and DISM should not be presented as a guaranteed repair for a Norton-owned DLL.

If repeatedly running these commands leaves you guessing about which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling Norton remains the definitive fix for this Norton file.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide a self-registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for repairing every missing DLL.
There is no reliable evidence that asfilter.dll is a COM self-registering DLL. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 asfilter.dll
is therefore not a recommended repair. It can produce another error, including a message that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found.

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically documents that the particular DLL must be registered and provides the correct file path and architecture. Norton repair or reinstall is the correct path for this file.
Fix 7: Do not copy the file to System32 or SysWOW64
asfilter.dll is not a Windows system file. Do not copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not place it in an unrelated application folder either.
Historical Norton installations placed the file inside a Norton versioned Engine directory. Copying it elsewhere can:

- Mix files from different Norton releases.
- Cause Windows to load the wrong copy.
- Create DLL search-order and security problems.
- Hide the real cause, such as a missing dependency or stale plug-in.
The correct location is determined by the Norton installer, not by the name of the Windows folder.
Fix 8: Understand 32-bit and 64-bit differences
Historical public evidence identifies a 32-bit asfilter.dll build, although that does not prove that every historical build had exactly the same architecture or metadata.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit Norton components. Therefore, seeing “64-bit Windows” does not mean you should search for or download a 64-bit replacement.
Architecture matters when:
- A 32-bit mail client loads the Norton component.
- A 64-bit program is incorrectly trying to load a 32-bit DLL.
- A dependency is installed for the wrong architecture.
- A third-party runtime installer is selected manually.
The Norton installer determines which files belong on the system. Do not replace the file with a copy obtained from another machine, another Norton release, or a DLL catalogue.
Fix 9: Check Device Manager only for a separate driver problem
asfilter.dll is an application component, not a Windows device driver. Device Manager will not restore it.
Best Value
- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
Use Device Manager only if the investigation also shows a separate hardware or driver issue:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category connected with the broader failure.
- Right-click a device with a warning icon.
- Select Properties and read the device status.
- Use Update driver or reinstall the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official source.
- Restart Windows and test the original application.
Do not expect a graphics, network, audio, or chipset driver update to replace asfilter.dll. If a separate driver problem leaves you hunting through many device versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the relevant installation; the full version performs driver installation, while Norton reinstall remains the correct fix for this DLL.
When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore only when the problem clearly began after a recent installation, update, driver change, or cleanup operation and a suitable restore point exists.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore may roll back related program changes, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling a damaged Norton installation. Do not use it first if the error appeared after a security detection. Investigate the detection and reinstall Norton from its official source instead.
What to collect before contacting support
If asfilter.dll still fails after Norton Remove and Reinstall, collect:
- The complete error message.
- The executable that displays it.
- The executable’s full path.
- The Norton product name and version.
- The reported
asfilter.dllpath, if one is shown. - The date and time the problem began.
- Whether it followed a Norton update, uninstall, cleanup, or security scan.
- The antivirus detection name and action.
- Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor entries from the same time.
- Whether more than one Norton installation remains.
The requesting executable is especially important. A current Norton process, an old mail-client plug-in, and a stale startup entry can all produce similar wording but require different cleanup.
Frequently asked questions
Is asfilter.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Norton AntiSpam and older Norton security products. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is asfilter.dll malware?
The name alone cannot establish whether a file is safe. A legitimate copy is expected to be installed with Norton’s files, while a copy in an unrelated or temporary location should be investigated. Check its path, digital signature, source, and antivirus detection.
Can I download asfilter.dll from a DLL website?
No. A loose download can contain malware, belong to the wrong Norton release, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. Reinstall Norton from its official installer instead.
Will SFC restore asfilter.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. asfilter.dll is a third-party Norton component, so Norton repair or reinstall is the appropriate fix.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not as a standard fix for this file. Consider it only when the error names a Microsoft runtime dependency or Norton Support identifies one.
Why did the error appear after uninstalling Norton?
The main Norton program may be gone while a startup entry, mail plug-in, shortcut, or scheduled component still requests the old DLL. Remove remaining Norton software cleanly, then disable or remove the stale reference.
What if the file returns after every reinstall?
Check whether antivirus software quarantines it again, whether multiple Norton installations remain, and which executable is requesting it. Run a malware scan, review Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor, and contact Norton Support with the detection and path details.
