Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing Windows, confirm three details:
- Which program fails:
crashhook.dllis most strongly associated with Test Drive Unlimited 2, including related launchers and modified TDU2 installations. - When the error appears: note whether it happens when starting the game, a launcher, TDU2 World, or a mod.
- The exact message: save the wording or take a screenshot. “CrashHook.dll is missing” points to a missing game file, while “the specified module could not be found” can also indicate a missing dependency.
crashhook.dll is the file name Windows cannot find or load. It is described as CrashHook, part of a CrashHook module attributed to Eden Games. It is not a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, or standard driver.
Do not download it from a random DLL website or copy it into System32. The correct repair is normally to restore the file from the original TDU2 installation, repair the launcher or mod that uses it, or recover it after an antivirus quarantine.

Fix 1: Verify the TDU2 installation
This is the fastest and safest fix when the file is missing, damaged, or removed by an incomplete update.
Steam installation
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click Test Drive Unlimited 2.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the scan.
- Restart Steam and launch TDU2 from the normal Steam shortcut.
Steam compares the installed files with the game’s expected files and can restore a missing crashhook.dll without placing an unrelated copy in Windows.

How to tell whether verification worked
The repair worked if:
- Steam reports that the file check completed successfully.
- The game reaches its menu instead of displaying the missing-file message.
crashhook.dllreturns to the TDU2 installation directory.- The error no longer appears when launching the same executable.
If Steam restores the file but Windows Security removes it again, do not keep repeating verification. Go to the antivirus section below and inspect the detection.
Non-Steam installation
Use the original installer or the repair option supplied with the legitimate game installation. If no repair option exists, uninstall TDU2, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original trusted source.
Do not copy crashhook.dll from another computer. A file from a different build, launcher, mod setup, or architecture may not match the executable that loads it.
Fix 2: Repair TDU2 World, a launcher, or a mod
If the base game starts but a launcher or mod fails, the missing file may belong to that modified installation path rather than the clean game files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Close TDU2, Steam, and every related launcher.
- Temporarily disable the TDU2 mod, unofficial patch, or alternate launcher.
- Start the unmodified game.
- If the clean game works, repair or reinstall the launcher or mod using its own original installation package.
- Install only a version intended for your TDU2 build.
- Launch the mod again and check the complete error message.
A mod may expect crashhook.dll in a particular game directory or may have been installed with an incomplete file set. If the error began immediately after changing the load order, replacing files, or installing a patch, undo that change first.
If several TDU2 installations exist, check the shortcut being used:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Review the Target field.
- Confirm that it points to the installation you repaired.
- Check the Start in field if it is available.
- Launch the game from that shortcut.
Repairing one copy does not fix a second copy used by a mod launcher.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection History
Windows Security may quarantine a game DLL. That does not automatically mean the file is safe, and it does not automatically mean the detection is correct. Review the detection before restoring anything.
Rank #2
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection related to TDU2 or
crashhook.dll. - Read the detection name, affected path, and action taken.
If the file came from a legitimate TDU2 installation and you have verified that the detection is a false positive, use the available restore or allow option. Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device, so do not approve the file solely because the game needs it.
After restoring it, run the game once. If the file is quarantined again:
- Stop restoring it repeatedly.
- Record the detection name and file path.
- Update Windows Security definitions.
- Scan the TDU2 installation.
- Reinstall TDU2 from the trusted game source if the detection remains.
- Contact the game or security-product support channel if a clean installation continues to trigger the same detection.
A clean reinstall is safer than repeatedly overriding a detection you have not understood.
Fix 4: Separate CrashHook from other missing DLL errors
TDU2 users can encounter CrashHook.dll and XINPUT1_3.dll errors in the same troubleshooting session. They are separate files and require separate fixes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the message names XINPUT1_3.dll
Install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from the Microsoft Download Center. This package supplies legacy side-by-side DirectX components, including XInput 1.3. It does not replace the main DirectX runtime built into Windows.
After installing it:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch TDU2 again.
- Check whether the error now names
CrashHook.dll, another dependency, or no longer appears.
Do not install the DirectX package merely because CrashHook.dll is missing. Microsoft does not supply CrashHook.dll.
If the message names a Visual C++ runtime DLL
Install the matching official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. The architecture must match the application that is failing, and older redistributables may need to remain installed alongside newer ones.
Do not assume that installing Visual C++ will recreate CrashHook.dll. Use it only when the error explicitly identifies a Visual C++ runtime component or when the game’s original installation instructions require it.

If the message only names CrashHook.dll
Return to file verification, launcher repair, antivirus inspection, and mod diagnosis. Installing unrelated runtimes is unlikely to restore a game-local file.
Fix 5: Check the game’s file location and architecture
crashhook.dll should normally remain in the TDU2 or related launcher/mod installation directory. It does not belong in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The root of another game
- A general shared DLL folder
A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit game. The relevant architecture is the game executable and the DLL it loads, not simply whether Windows is 64-bit. Public metadata for this file is inconsistent about architecture, so do not choose an x86 or x64 replacement based on an index page.
To inspect the installation:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click TDU2.
- Select Manage.
- Select Browse local files.
- Look for the game executable and its normal supporting files.
- Do not move DLLs between folders while testing.
For a shortcut-based installation, right-click the shortcut and choose Open file location. Confirm that the path is the same installation you repaired.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other programs also fail
Windows repair commands do not normally recreate a third-party game DLL. Use them when several applications show system-file errors, Windows features are malfunctioning, or the computer has broader signs of component corruption.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test TDU2 again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is a substitute for verifying or reinstalling TDU2.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what it identifies, while repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling TDU2 remains the definitive fix for a missing game file.

Fix 7: Reinstall a runtime only when the error identifies it
Do not use Windows Features as a general solution for crashhook.dll. Enabling .NET Framework or legacy Windows components will not normally supply this file.

- EXPLORE: Hit the streets on a whole new island: IBIZA. Take on thousands of unique missions as you explore over two thousand miles of back road and blacktop in this Mediterranean paradise.
Use the following rule:
- CrashHook.dll only: repair or reinstall TDU2 or its launcher/mod.
- XINPUT1_3.dll: install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX End-User Runtime.
- A named Visual C++ DLL: install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Several Windows applications failing: consider DISM and SFC.
- A graphics or input driver error: update or reinstall the relevant driver.
If you do change a runtime, restart Windows and launch the same program again. If the error changes to another named DLL, record the new message rather than downloading that file separately.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall drivers only for driver-related symptoms
A graphics-driver problem can prevent a game from launching, but it does not usually explain a missing crashhook.dll. Use driver repair when TDU2 also shows display corruption, crashes after the window opens, device errors, or problems in other games.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the same Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver when available.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a clean reinstall, download the driver only from the computer, graphics-card, or chipset manufacturer’s official support page. Disconnecting unnecessary overlays and testing the clean TDU2 installation can help distinguish a driver issue from a missing game file.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean comparing hardware IDs, model revisions, and packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, but the full version is required to install updates; use this only as an optional convenience because a driver update will not replace crashhook.dll.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM, OLE, and ActiveX DLLs. A normal game runtime DLL is generally loaded by the game and does not need registration.
Do not run:
regsvr32 crashhook.dll
as a routine repair. If it reports that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found, that does not prove the file is corrupt. It usually means the DLL is not designed for self-registration.
The correct repair is to restore the file in the game’s own directory and fix the installation that should contain it.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A downloaded DLL can be:
- Tampered with or bundled with malware
- The wrong version for the game
- The wrong architecture
- Missing required dependencies
- Intended for a different TDU2 build
- Placed in a directory where it creates future version conflicts
Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can hide the real problem while causing another application to load the wrong file. Use Steam’s verification, the original game installer, or the legitimate launcher/mod repair process instead.

Use System Restore only for a broader recent failure
System Restore is appropriate when:
- TDU2 worked before a specific driver, update, or application installation.
- Other programs began failing at the same time.
- A suitable restore point exists.
To check:
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
System Restore is not the first choice for an isolated missing game DLL. Verify or reinstall TDU2 first.
If the error returns after verification
Work through this short checklist:
- Check whether Windows Security quarantines the file again.
- Confirm that the shortcut launches the repaired TDU2 installation.
- Disable the mod or alternate launcher and test the clean game.
- Remove unofficial patches temporarily.
- Reinstall the launcher or mod from its original trusted package.
- Check whether the complete error names another dependency.
- Confirm that multiple TDU2 folders are not being mixed.
- Repair or reinstall the game if the file repeatedly disappears.
- Run DISM and SFC only if other Windows applications also show component errors.
- Use System Restore only when the failure follows a clear system change.
Frequently asked questions
Is crashhook.dll part of Windows?
No evidence supports that. It is associated with third-party game software, most strongly Test Drive Unlimited 2, and should not be treated as a Windows system DLL.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes Microsoft provide crashhook.dll?
No. Microsoft’s DirectX and Visual C++ packages may repair separately named dependencies, but they do not supply this TDU2 component.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Keep it in the TDU2, launcher, or mod installation directory that expects it.
Can I register it with regsvr32?
Normally no. Game runtime DLLs generally are not self-registering components.
What if I see both CrashHook.dll and XINPUT1_3.dll?
Treat them as separate problems. Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX runtime only for the XINPUT1_3.dll error, then repair TDU2 for CrashHook.dll.
Does a 64-bit Windows PC need a 64-bit CrashHook file?
Not necessarily. Windows architecture and application architecture are different. Do not replace the file based on a generic x86 or x64 label, especially because public listings conflict.
What is the safest fix?
Verify TDU2 through Steam, or repair/reinstall it from the original trusted installer. If the file disappeared after a security detection, inspect Protection History before restoring it.
