Windows Central’s October 6, 2026 report says Xbox leader Asha Sharma told an internal town hall that growth had begun after an all-time low. The outlet later clarified that the chart she was discussing measured first-party growth: games Xbox owns and publishes. The chart and its methodology have not been published, so the remarks are not proof that console sales, Microsoft Gaming revenue, or every Xbox business line is growing.
What did Asha Sharma say?
In a report published October 6, 2026, Windows Central said Sharma told Xbox employees: “We’re making the right decisions to reinvest in the business, after an all time low, we’ve started to return to growth, more than 2 to 3 times what we were, and we expect that continue.” The wording is reported from an internal town hall, not from a publicly posted official transcript. Windows Central updated its story to clarify that the chart discussed was about first-party growth—Xbox-owned and published games. Windows Central’s report
That scope matters: the reported improvement concerns a part of Xbox’s business, not necessarily the full company or all of Microsoft Gaming. The public report does not include the chart, define the metric, identify the comparison period, or disclose the baseline. As a result, “more than 2 to 3 times what we were” cannot be translated into a verified growth rate or compared reliably with another period.
What does “return to growth” mean here?
There are three different claims to keep separate: a management target for FY27, a reported early improvement in first-party growth, and independently reported financial performance. The available reporting supports the first two as statements by Sharma; it does not establish that Xbox as a whole has already returned to growth.

| Return-to-growth target | Xbox business; announced July 2026 for 2027 / by the end of FY27 | Sharma stated the target in an official employee message and later reiterated it in remarks quoted by Windows Central. It is a management expectation, not confirmation that the target has been met. Xbox Wire, July 6, 2026; Windows Central, July 2026 report |
| Early growth reported at the town hall | First-party games; reported October 6, 2026 | Windows Central says Sharma’s chart concerned first-party growth. The chart, metric definition, baseline, and comparison period are not public. Windows Central, October 6, 2026 |
| Company-wide results | All Xbox / Microsoft Gaming business lines | The cited town-hall reporting does not establish that all business lines, revenue, or console sales have returned to growth. |
The “2 to 3 times” wording is particularly difficult to interpret without its underlying chart and definitions. It is best treated as Sharma’s reported description of a first-party growth measure, rather than as a disclosed company-wide figure.
Why was Xbox focused on growth?
In her official July 6, 2026 message to employees, Sharma described the business as unhealthy. She said Xbox had bet on Game Pass, a multiplatform strategy, and a broader content portfolio, but these areas had not grown at the expected pace while the core business weakened. The message announced a restructuring and set a goal of returning to growth in 2027. Xbox Wire’s July 6 message

Sharma’s message said approximately 3,200 team reductions were planned throughout FY27, including approximately 1,600 immediately. She also said margins were 3–10 times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses and that the studio portfolio lost 64 cents per dollar invested in a typical year. Those figures are her stated rationale; the message does not name the comparison businesses or provide calculation methods.
On July 29, Sharma said more than 200 million new players had come to Xbox and its games in FY26, but that the business had not grown with its audience. Windows Central reported the remarks on July 31 and noted that the public statement did not make the scope of “players” clear. Sharma said Xbox expected to return to growth by the end of FY27. What else was reported at the October town hall?
Windows Central also reported Sharma’s claim that positive Xbox brand sentiment rose 30% over the prior year. The report does not identify a survey provider, sample, question wording, geography, or methodology. The figure should therefore be understood as an attributed internal claim, not as an independently verifiable poll result. Windows Central’s town-hall report
The same report named Gears of War: E-Day, Minecraft Dungeons 2, and World of Warcraft Forever as having strong starts, and described a focus on strengthening Xbox Series X|S. Those remarks provide strategic context; they do not show that any one game or console caused the reported first-party growth.

What can players conclude?
- There is a reported improvement in first-party growth. Windows Central says the October chart Sharma discussed was about games Xbox owns and publishes.
- The broader Xbox recovery is not confirmed by that report. It does not show that console sales, overall Xbox revenue, or every business line has returned to growth.
- The scale of the change remains unclear. The chart, baseline, period, and metric definition are not public, and the brand-sentiment methodology is also undisclosed.
- The FY27 goal remains a target. Sharma’s July statements set an expectation for a later return to growth; an early first-party improvement is not evidence that the entire business has met it.
