Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reportedly told employees that the company must keep creating new franchises as well as backing its biggest existing games. The remarks, reported by Windows Central on October 12, 2026, came amid an announced workforce reduction of approximately 3,200 across FY27 and a restructuring that Xbox said was roughly three-quarters complete by September. The timing makes the strategy question pointed: how can Xbox invest in new creative bets while changing teams and studio ownership?
What Asha Sharma reportedly said about new Xbox IP
Windows Central reported that Sharma spoke at an internal Xbox Town Hall during the week before its October 12, 2026 story. The outlet attributed its transcript to multiple sources and explicitly described it as unauthorized. It is therefore a report of her remarks, not an official transcript or a recording independently confirming the wording.

In the passage, Sharma paired two aims: support for established franchises and continued creation of new intellectual property. Windows Central quoted her as saying: “We’re backing our strongest franchises. I want our great games to become great global billion-dollar franchises. I would also like to see us continue to create enduring new IP. We will not survive if we only revive on the past. We have to find new ways, and courage, to have invention on new IP, that reaches new sets of audiences.” Read Windows Central’s October 12 report.

The “we will not survive” excerpt is not a standalone forecast of Xbox’s imminent failure. In the reported sentence, Sharma was arguing against relying only on the past and for inventing games that can reach new audiences. Her reference to billion-dollar franchises was an ambition, not a guarantee that any game or property will reach that scale.

Why Xbox is pursuing both established franchises and new properties
Known franchises can give a publisher an audience that already recognizes the name, while a new property can offer a route to players who may not be drawn to the existing catalogue. Those aims can coexist, but they compete for finite development teams, time, marketing attention, and executive support. The Windows Central report describes Sharma’s stated priorities; it does not establish how Xbox will divide budgets or what share of its slate will go to either category.
The report names Fallout, Call of Duty, Candy Crush, and World of Warcraft among prominent existing franchises. It also points to Clockwork Revolution, an inXile project, as a prospective new franchise. That is an example of a project in development, not proof that Xbox has established a successful or sustained new-IP pipeline.

Windows Central further reported that Sharma discussed opportunities to grow King and casual gaming, and described Halo and Sea of Thieves IP moving under Activision as part of a simplification effort. These are details attributed to the outlet’s account; they should not be read as a broader announcement of additional studio or IP transfers.
What the 3,200 planned job reductions mean
On July 6, 2026, Sharma announced in an official Xbox Wire post: “After careful consideration, I’ve made the difficult decision to reduce our team by approximately 3,200 throughout FY27.” The figure is approximate and covers planned reductions across FY27. It does not mean that all 3,200 positions had already been eliminated by October 13, 2026. Read the July 6 Xbox Wire announcement.

Xbox’s September 22 update said completed actions, including studio divestitures, had brought the company roughly three-quarters of the way through the announced restructuring. That is the company’s description of overall restructuring progress, not a statement that three-quarters of the planned job reductions had necessarily been completed. Read the September 22 Xbox Wire update.
Why “parting ways with studios” needs qualification
The restructuring has involved studio divestitures as well as workforce changes. A divestiture changes ownership or management; it is not the same as closing a studio. The September update’s description of progress includes those divestitures, so describing every affected studio as shut down would overstate what the company announced.

Does the reported strategy mean Xbox is still making new games?
Sharma’s reported remarks explicitly endorse continuing to create new IP, and the Windows Central story discusses studios working on new franchises. That supports saying Xbox’s stated ambition includes new games and properties; it does not establish which projects will be funded, released, or retained as studio structures change. The cited reporting offers no budget split, success-rate forecast, or evidence that a particular new franchise will become a major hit.
Best Value
The strategic test is not simply whether Xbox announces new names. It is whether teams have the continuity and resources to develop those properties, and whether the company supports them long enough to find audiences. Established franchises may offer reach among existing fans; new IP has to build recognition while taking on creative and commercial risk. No sourced figures in the cited coverage quantify those trade-offs.
Quick Recap
What is known—and what remains uncertain
- Reported strategy: Windows Central says Sharma advocated both backing leading franchises and creating enduring new IP at an internal Town Hall; its transcript was unauthorized.
- Official workforce plan: Xbox announced approximately 3,200 team reductions throughout FY27, not a completed total as of October 13, 2026.
- Official restructuring update: Xbox said actions including studio divestitures brought the restructuring roughly three-quarters of the way to completion as of September 22.
- Not established: The reporting does not show how much funding will go to new IP versus existing franchises, confirm a next list of studio changes, or demonstrate that the stated goals will produce billion-dollar franchises.
