The studio shared the tease alongside its announcement that RimWorld update 1.7 is moving from Unity to Waylith.
What Ludeon has confirmed about its new game
In an October 12, 2026 announcement, Ludeon Studios said: “RimWorld isn’t the only game on Waylith. We’re working on something new! It may be a little while before we can share more details, but we couldn’t resist telling you.” The statement confirms that another game is in development for Waylith. It does not identify the project or say when Ludeon will share more.

The announcement does not call the project RimWorld 2, describe it as a sequel, or establish any relationship to RimWorld beyond its use of the same engine. The studio’s post also does not explain the 13-year milestone referenced in some descriptions of the news, so it is not evidence of a specific project start date.
What Waylith means for RimWorld 1.7
Ludeon says update 1.7 moves RimWorld from Unity to Waylith, an engine built in-house by the studio. It says the game looks and plays the same after the change. The announcement presents the engine transition as the major technical change in 1.7, rather than a visible redesign of the game.

The studio says Waylith gives modders access to the latest C# language features and makes it easier to build complex mods without harming performance. It also says large visual changes and complex custom effects should be more accessible. More than two dozen modders helped test and prepare Waylith’s debut, according to Ludeon.
How much faster is 1.7?
Ludeon reports a 2–4× performance improvement in its tests, with faster startup, loading large mod lists, map generation, world generation and general ticks per second. In one late-game colony stress test, the studio reports 2.2× better performance than 1.6. It also says a modpack containing 1,500 mods took 6 minutes to load in 1.7, compared with 14 minutes in 1.6.

These are Ludeon’s results, not independent benchmarks. The studio cautions that performance varies depending on a player’s PC and mods, so the figures should not be treated as a guarantee for a particular system or mod setup.

Can you try RimWorld 1.7, and will your saves and mods work?
At the time of Ludeon’s October 12 announcement, 1.7 was available as an optional test on Steam’s unstable beta branch; the main branch remained on 1.6. Branch availability and Steam’s interface can change, so check the official post or Steam for the current status before switching.

Ludeon’s published instructions at announcement were to open RimWorld in the Steam library, open Properties, select Betas, and choose unstable. If the game did not update, the studio advised restarting Steam.
- Saves: Ludeon says 1.6 saves load in 1.7, and saves made in 1.7 also work after reverting to 1.6.
- Mods: The studio says the vast majority work without changes. Some may be flagged “potentially unsupported” if their version number has not been updated; mod authors are encouraged to test and publish versions marked compatible with 1.7.
- Older PCs: Ludeon warns that computers more than 10 years old may not run 1.7. The announcement does not provide a full system-requirements list; it directs affected players to the studio’s development Discord.
Because this is an unstable beta, players should weigh those compatibility claims against the possibility of problems in a test build. Ludeon’s stated save compatibility gives players a route back to 1.6, but the studio’s performance figures are not a substitute for checking how the beta behaves on an individual PC and mod list.
