What Comes After The Final Shape? Destiny 2’s Fate Saga—and What Changed

The Final Shape closed Destiny 2’s Light and Darkness Saga, but the plans that followed changed. Here’s what Bungie has said about the Fate Saga, the final planned update, continued play, and restoring vaulted content.

Updated October 8, 2026. The Final Shape ended Destiny 2’s Light and Darkness Saga, and Bungie introduced the Fate Saga as its next multiyear story arc. But the studio’s plans changed: Bungie says the final planned live-service content update arrived on June 9, 2026. Destiny 2 is intended to remain playable, and Bungie has begun work to restore vaulted campaigns, destinations, and raids, though it has not announced when that content will return.

What comes after The Final Shape?

Bungie presented The Final Shape as the conclusion of Destiny 2’s Light and Darkness Saga. Destiny 2 Narrative Director Alison Lührs said, “We’re proud of The Final Shape and the ending we created for the Light and Darkness Saga.” Bungie described the Episodes that followed as an epilogue to tie up story threads and prepare for what came next.

The next story arc was named the Fate Saga. Bungie’s 2024 New Frontiers announcement described it as a multiyear saga beginning with Codename: Apollo. In May 2025, Bungie said The Edge of Fate would set up the Fate Saga and announced Renegades as the second expansion in the Year of Prophecy.

How Bungie’s plans changed

The Fate Saga name and the 2024 and 2025 roadmaps describe Bungie’s intentions at those moments; they should not be read as a current promise of ongoing expansions. Bungie’s May 2026 announcement named June 9 as the date of Destiny 2’s final planned live-service content update. Its September 2026 statement then described work to restore vaulted content, without setting a release date.

Date Announcement or change Status and what it means
2024 New Frontiers: a shift from three Episodes to four Major Updates per year and two expansions annually. Historical roadmap. Bungie said plans were subject to change; this cadence is not the current support model.
May 6, 2025 Year of Prophecy schedule: The Edge of Fate (July 15, 2025), Ash & Iron (September 9, 2025), Renegades (December 2, 2025), and Shadow & Order (March 3, 2026). Dates as listed in Bungie’s announcement, not evidence that every item remained on schedule. The announcement identified The Edge of Fate as setting up the Fate Saga.
May 21, 2026; update released June 9, 2026 Bungie named Monument of Triumph the final planned live-service content update. Update 9.7.0 became available on June 9. Bungie Help says the update remains in the game indefinitely; Bungie says Destiny 2 remains playable.
September 17, 2026 Bungie said Destiny remains foundational to its future and that work had begun to restore vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids. Restoration work announced, but no return date, release sequence, or expansion cadence specified.

Bungie’s 2024 plan called for the four Major Updates to refresh the core game and be free to all players, while expansions were part of the same announced annual model. That model is historical context, not a description of what players should expect now. The Year of Prophecy schedule likewise records the dates Bungie announced in May 2025, rather than establishing a continuing roadmap.

Is Bungie done with Destiny 2?

Not according to Bungie’s latest statement, but “not done” does not mean that regular Destiny 2 content updates or a new expansion schedule have been promised. On September 17, 2026, Studio Head Poria Torkan and Head of Product Josh Deane wrote, “Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future,” and “All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.” They also said Bungie had begun work to bring back vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids for all Destiny 2 players.

The same statement says restoration requires technical work, including updating lighting, encounters, combatants, and underlying systems to current standards. Bungie said it would share more information in the coming months. It did not name which content will return first or give a date, so the announcement is a statement of intent and work underway—not a scheduled release.

Will Destiny 2 still be playable?

Bungie said Destiny 2 would remain playable after the final planned live-service content update. Its Monument of Triumph and Update 9.7.0 support guide says the game will no longer receive planned live-service content updates after Update 9.7.0 on June 9, 2026, while allowing that Bungie may need to release a future hotfix for game health and stability.

The guide says content available as of Update 9.5.6.3, plus content added in Update 9.7.0, would remain available on and after June 9. This is a statement about continued availability of that content, not a guarantee that the game will receive new story releases or routine updates.

What was in the final update?

Monument of Triumph was a game-wide celebration update. Bungie’s preview described a refreshed Director, Pantheon 2.0, changes to raid and dungeon loot, destination rewards, ability and Exotic updates, and Crucible modes. Those features describe the June 2026 update; they do not signal a renewed yearly update plan.

Will vaulted Destiny 2 content return?

Bungie says it has begun work on restoring vaulted campaigns, destinations, and raids, and that the restored content is intended to be available to all Destiny 2 players. The studio has not announced a release date, rollout order, or list of specific returning activities. Because the work involves technical updates to the content and underlying systems, players should treat the return as an announced effort rather than something already available or scheduled.

What Destiny 2 content is free, and what requires a purchase?

Destiny 2 includes content available at no cost as well as paid expansions, Dungeon Keys, and content packs. Bungie Help’s available content guide describes a Collection bundle that includes The Witch Queen, Lightfall, The Final Shape, The Edge of Fate, and Renegades; it says components can also be acquired separately. The guide does not establish a price for every platform or region, so check the current store listing for the platform where you play before buying. Bungie’s September 2026 statement that restored vaulted content will be available to all Destiny 2 players is separate from the existing mix of free and paid content.
