ashtask.dll is an Avast antivirus component, not a Windows file. When ashtask.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair the Avast installation before attempting anything else.
The file is described as the Avast Task Handling Module and is associated with Avast Antivirus products, including legacy Avast installations, Avast Free Antivirus, and Avast Premium Security. It may appear under an Avast program directory such as:

Older installations may use an Alwil Software path. The exact folder and file architecture depend on the Avast release. Public listings show historical 32-bit versions, but they are not an official compatibility table and should not be used to select a replacement file.

What the ashtask.dll error means
The wording usually points to a damaged or mismatched Avast installation:
| Message | What it usually indicates |
|---|---|
| “The AshTask.dll file was missing from my computer” | The file was deleted, quarantined, or removed during an incomplete Avast change |
| “ashtask.dll was not found” | Avast or Windows cannot locate the module in its expected installation path |
| “The procedure entry point could not be located” | ashtask.dll and another Avast module, often ashbase.dll, do not match |
| “Linked to missing export” | One Avast component expects a function that another installed component does not provide |
| The error appears during startup or update | Avast was left incomplete after an update, uninstall, or reinstall |
These errors have been reported after Avast upgrades, interrupted removals, profile migrations, and damaged installations. A missing-file message does not automatically mean malware, but a suspicious file path must be investigated.
Fix 1: Repair Avast from Installed apps
Repair is the safest first step because it restores the complete Avast module set instead of replacing one DLL.

- Select Installed apps on Windows 11. On some Windows 10 builds, select Apps & features.
- Find Avast Free Antivirus or Avast Premium Security.
- Select the three-dot menu beside Avast.
- Choose Uninstall.
- When the Avast Setup window opens, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts and allow Avast to replace damaged components.
- Restart Windows if Avast requests it.
- Open Avast and check whether the error returns.
The Windows label says Uninstall, but that opens Avast’s own setup maintenance screen. Do not continue with removal if the Repair option is available.
Repair worked if Avast opens normally, its update screen loads, and the ashtask.dll message no longer appears during sign-in or startup. If repair is unavailable, fails immediately, or reports that setup is already running, continue with Avast’s official removal utility.
Fix 2: Check Avast Quarantine before removing anything
Avast may have isolated the file after detecting corruption or suspicious activity.
- Open Avast.
- Select Menu.
- Select Quarantine.
- Look for
ashtask.dll. - Check the file’s original location and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only when it came from the Avast installation directory and the installed Avast copy is trusted. Avast’s quarantine screen may offer Restore or Restore and add exception.

Fix 3: Remove Avast with Avast Clear, then reinstall it
Use Avast Clear when normal repair cannot run, the uninstaller is damaged, or Avast was only partly removed.
- Download Avast Uninstall Tool from Avast’s official support site.
- Save the utility rather than running it from a temporary browser location.
- Right-click the downloaded tool and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the prompt to restart Windows in Safe Mode.
- After the restart, choose the detected Avast product.
- Select Uninstall. If the utility offers Remove & Reinstall, use that option when appropriate.
- Wait for the removal to complete.
- Restart Windows normally.
- Install Avast again using Avast’s official installer.
- Restart once more if the installer requests it.
- Open Avast and apply any available product update.
Use the official Avast installer for the product you intend to keep. Do not restore an old ashtask.dll from a backup unless Avast support specifically instructs you to do so.
Reinstallation worked if Avast opens without a startup error, updates successfully, and its installation folder contains a consistent set of current modules. If setup fails again, temporarily remove other antivirus products, restart, install pending Windows updates, and retry. Leftover security software, outdated Windows components, and corrupted setup files can interfere with Avast installation.
Fix 4: Check the file path and digital signature
A filename alone does not prove that a DLL is genuine.
- Search Windows for
ashtask.dll. - Right-click the result and select Open file location.
- Confirm that the file is inside the Avast installation directory.
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Review the signer and the signature status.
- Scan the file with your installed security software.
A copy in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary folder, a browser download folder, or an unrelated game directory deserves suspicion. Do not disable antivirus protection just to make that copy load.
If the file is outside Avast’s directory, remove the suspicious copy only after confirming that no legitimate Avast installation uses it. If several unrelated components are failing, use a full security scan and consider Windows Recovery options rather than repeatedly replacing DLLs.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
ashtask.dll belongs to Avast, so Windows system repair tools normally will not restore it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows has broader symptoms, such as failures involving multiple built-in tools, damaged system files, or unusual component errors.

- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry Avast repair.
Microsoft documents DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses. These commands repair protected Windows components; they are not a source for third-party Avast files.

Repeatedly hunting through Windows folders and rerunning SFC/DISM can be tedious when the underlying problem is an incomplete Avast installation. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; its full-version repair performs the fixes, but reinstalling Avast remains the definitive solution for an Avast-owned DLL.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, review the broader Windows symptoms and repair Avast with Avast Clear rather than copying ashtask.dll into a system folder.
Fix 6: Consider a recent driver or system change
A display, storage, security, or chipset driver change can coincide with an Avast failure, especially if the error began immediately after a system update. This is not the usual cause of an Avast-owned DLL error, so update drivers only when Device Manager shows a problem or the timing strongly points to a driver change.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the recent change.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver date and provider.
- Use Update Driver or Roll Back Driver when the option is available.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair Avast again if necessary.
Avoid downloading a random driver package or replacing a driver simply because an Avast DLL error appeared. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify outdated drivers and show which versions need attention; the full version performs the driver installation, while Avast repair or reinstall remains the direct fix for ashtask.dll.
If the problem began after an application, driver, or Windows change and Avast repair does not help, System Restore may be appropriate. Press Windows + R, type rstrui.exe, press Enter, and choose a restore point from before the change. Review affected programs before confirming, because System Restore can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after that point.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Do not treat regsvr32 as a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
ashtask.dll is an Avast task-handling module, and there is no verified reason to manually register it. Running commands such as these can produce another error without repairing Avast:
regsvr32 ashtask.dll
regsvr32 C:PathToashtask.dll
If Avast support gives product-specific instructions, follow those instructions and use the exact file path they provide. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the complete Avast product.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the installed Avast build. Even a clean file may fail because ashbase.dll, Avast executables, and configuration files are still mismatched.
The safe sources are Avast’s official repair process, Avast Clear, and Avast’s official installer. Do not copy ashtask.dll into:

Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit Avast modules
Public metadata lists both architectures for some Avast releases, while the historical entries above are 32-bit. The correct architecture depends on the installed Avast build and operating system. Mixing architectures or release generations can create entry-point and missing-export errors.
Do not force an antivirus exclusion
If the file is detected again after restoration, stop restoring it. Investigate the path, signature, and detection, then reinstall Avast from its official source if necessary.
FAQ
Is ashtask.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Avast antivirus software. Windows does not normally need this file for its own operation.
Can I fix the error by downloading ashtask.dll?
That is unsafe and often ineffective. The Avast modules must match one another, so repair or reinstall Avast instead.
Which Avast products may contain it?
Legacy Avast Antivirus products, Avast Free Antivirus, Avast Premium Security, and related Avast-branded installations may contain the module depending on the release.
Should I run SFC first?
Not usually. Start with Avast repair. Use DISM followed by SFC only when Windows shows broader corruption symptoms.
Why does the error mention an entry point instead of a missing file?
That usually means the file exists but does not match another Avast module. A complete repair or clean reinstall is safer than replacing only ashtask.dll.
What if Avast still fails after Avast Clear?
Remove other antivirus products, restart, update Windows, and retry the official Avast installer. If Windows itself is unstable or several unrelated programs fail, use System Restore or Windows Recovery options and contact Avast support with the exact error text.
