“The program can’t start because auditcse.dll is missing from your computer.”
If Windows reports that auditcse.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or is not a valid Windows image, repair Windows components rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The 60-second answer

auditcse.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file called Windows Audit Settings CSE. CSE means client-side extension. Windows uses it when Group Policy processes advanced security audit-policy settings.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

On a supported Windows installation, the expected native location is normally:

%windir%System32auditcse.dll

The safest repair order is:

  1. Install pending Windows updates and restart.
  2. Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. Run System File Checker.
  4. Restart and test again.
  5. If the error remains, investigate antivirus quarantine, component-store damage, disk problems, or Group Policy events.

This file is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or ordinary application dependency. There is no verified official redistributable package for it.

What auditcse.dll does

The Audit Settings CSE is invoked by the Windows Group Policy engine when applicable policy settings are processed. It controls advanced security audit-policy settings rather than providing graphics, sound, game, or general application functionality.

Microsoft identifies a dedicated log for this extension:

Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Security-Audit-Configuration-Client > Operational

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

A missing or damaged file can therefore affect audit-policy processing even when Windows itself continues to start. If the error appears during a Group Policy refresh, the underlying issue may be policy processing rather than an application installation.

Is auditcse.dll legitimate and safe?

Yes. The legitimate file belongs to Microsoft Windows and is associated with Microsoft Corporation. A normal copy should be in the Windows system directory, not beside a game executable or in a random download folder.

Do not judge legitimacy from the filename alone. Malware can use a familiar filename, and a damaged or manually replaced file can produce a Bad Image error without being malware.

To inspect the file when it exists:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Enter %windir%System32 in the address bar.
  3. Find auditcse.dll.
  4. Right-click it and choose Properties.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  6. Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.

Windows versions and servicing branches can contain different file versions, sizes, and architectures. Do not treat an old file catalog as a complete inventory for current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations.

Common causes of the error

The message does not prove one specific cause. The usual possibilities are:

  • Corruption in the Windows component store
  • An incomplete or failed Windows update
  • File-system or disk corruption
  • Antivirus quarantine or security remediation
  • A manually replaced or mismatched system file
  • An architecture mismatch
  • A missing dependency behind the “specified module could not be found” message
  • A Group Policy processing failure

A third-party application can display the error if it indirectly triggers a Windows operation, but there is no strong evidence that a particular consumer game or application commonly bundles this file. Reinstalling an application is therefore not the first repair.

Fix 1: Update Windows, then run DISM and SFC

This is the primary fix for a genuinely missing or damaged copy.

Install pending updates

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install every available update.
  5. Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.

Updates can repair or replace protected Windows components. After restarting, retry the program or action that produced the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is running.

DISM repairs the Windows component store and normally uses Windows Update as its repair source. A successful completion means the command finished without reporting that the restore operation failed. It does not necessarily mean the original application error is already fixed.

Run System File Checker

In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files currently pass the check.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: continue to the repair-source and recovery steps below.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: retry in Safe Mode and review the CBS log.

Restart after SFC completes.

When repeatedly hunting through Windows Update history, DISM output, and SFC logs becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; its free scan identifies problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate first repair for auditcse.dll.

Fix 2: Use a matching DISM repair source

If DISM says that source files could not be found, use a trusted Windows installation source that matches the installed Windows version and build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The general form is:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual Windows folder from your matching repair source.

Do not use an arbitrary ISO, an old Windows installation, or files copied from another computer. A mismatched source can leave the component store in a worse state. After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Then restart.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a file during security remediation. Check the history before attempting any restore.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Choose Protection history.
  5. Review entries related to auditcse.dll.
  6. Expand an entry to see its original path and detection details.

Only consider restoring a file if it was located in the genuine Windows directory and its Microsoft signature can be verified. If the file was under a user-writable folder, a temporary directory, or an unusual application path, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restoring a quarantined item can cause Microsoft Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed. Do not create an exclusion simply to suppress a warning. If Windows repair restores the legitimate system copy, that is safer than returning an unverified quarantined file.

Fix 4: Check the file path and architecture

A normal system copy should be under the Windows directory, usually:

C:WindowsSystem32auditcse.dll

On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files. SysWOW64 is used for many 32-bit system components. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32, copy a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64, or replace a current file with an old version simply because the filename matches.

To check your system architecture:

  1. Open Settings.

Architecture mismatch can produce “not designed to run on Windows” or Bad Image messages. The correct fix is Windows servicing, not manually swapping files.

A “specified module could not be found” message can also identify a missing dependency rather than prove that auditcse.dll itself is absent. DISM and SFC are still the correct first checks.

Fix 5: Investigate Group Policy and audit events

Use this path when the error occurs during policy refresh, sign-in, or security-policy changes.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type eventvwr.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Expand Applications and Services Logs.
  5. Open Microsoft > Windows > Security-Audit-Configuration-Client > Operational.
  6. Review errors and warnings around the time of the failure.
  7. Also check Microsoft > Windows > GroupPolicy > Operational.

Microsoft documents Audit CSE-related Group Policy events, including Event IDs 4016 and 5016. Record the event description, error code, and timestamp before changing anything.

If policy processing fails only for this extension while other Group Policy processing continues, repair the Windows component first. If the file is present and signed but the events continue, review the affected policy and the Group Policy operational log instead of reinstalling runtimes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check disk and file-system health

If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, or the file disappears again after repair, the storage device or file system may be contributing to the problem.

First, back up important files. Then:

  1. Open Windows Security and review Device performance & health.
  2. Check whether Windows reports storage or system problems.
  3. Review the SFC result and the CBS log for recurring repair failures.
  4. Consider System Restore or Windows recovery if corruption continues.

Do not assume that auditcse.dll is the root cause when Windows repeatedly damages restored files. A storage or servicing problem may need attention first.

Fix 7: Do not start with drivers or runtimes

Driver updates are not a normal fix for auditcse.dll. This is a Windows Group Policy component, not a graphics, audio, chipset, or device-driver DLL.

Only investigate drivers if Device Manager also shows a device failure or the computer has broader hardware-related symptoms:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click a device with a warning icon.
  5. Choose Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
  6. Use Update driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.
  7. Restart and retest.

If you are manually checking many hardware vendors and driver packages, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and should not replace Windows component repair when auditcse.dll is the actual problem.

Similarly, reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the default answer because auditcse.dll is not identified as part of those packages.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

Do not run this as a generic repair:

regsvr32 auditcse.dll

regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that expose the appropriate registration entry point. The Audit Settings CSE is invoked by the Group Policy engine, not normally registered by hand. Running regsvr32 can produce an error and does not repair a missing or corrupt Windows component.

Do not download auditcse.dll

Avoid DLL download sites sites and random file mirrors. A downloaded copy can be:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The wrong Windows version
  • The wrong architecture
  • Damaged or modified
  • Malware
  • Missing required dependencies
  • An incorrect fix that hides the underlying component-store problem

Do not place a downloaded file beside a game or application. That can change DLL search behavior and make troubleshooting harder. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, or a trusted matching installation source instead.

If none of the repairs work

If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows:

  1. Retry SFC in Safe Mode if it could not perform the requested operation.
  2. Review the CBS log for the unrepaired file.
  3. Try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
  4. Use Windows recovery options.
  5. Perform an in-place repair installation while preserving personal files and applications when possible.
  6. Back up your data before considering a clean installation.

A clean installation should be the last resort, not the first response to a single DLL message.

FAQ

Is auditcse.dll a virus?

The genuine Microsoft file is legitimate Windows functionality. A copy in an unusual folder, a failed Microsoft signature, or a detection from Windows Security requires investigation.

Should auditcse.dll be in System32?

Normally, yes. On supported Windows installations the expected native location is %windir%System32, although exact files vary by Windows release, architecture, and servicing level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy it from another computer?

No. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, or servicing state. Repair the local Windows image instead.

Will reinstalling the affected game fix it?

Usually not when the error refers to the Windows copy. Reinstall the application only when the message identifies an application-owned copy outside the Windows directory and the developer provides an official installer.

Does SFC always restore the file?

No. SFC may report that it cannot repair some files or that it could not perform the operation. Use DISM first, then a matching repair source or Windows recovery.

What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?

It commonly indicates a damaged binary, incompatible architecture, or an incorrect replacement. It does not by itself prove malware, and it does not mean that regsvr32 is required.
