Use a separate Microsoft account for your child, add it to your Microsoft family group, and keep your adult account private. That gives your child an individual gamertag, saves, friends list and age-based settings while letting you control content, screen time, spending, multiplayer and communications on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
Microsoft’s current family tools are Xbox Family Settings and Microsoft Family Safety. Menu wording can vary slightly by console software version, account age and region, but the destinations are broadly the same.

Before you begin
- An internet-connected Xbox One, Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X
- Your adult Microsoft account, which should be the family organizer
- Your child’s existing Microsoft account, or time to create one
- The child’s correct date of birth
- A phone for the Xbox Family Settings app, or access to account.microsoft.com/family
- A decision about whether to allow multiplayer, voice chat, text chat, broadcasting and web access
If your child does not have an account, Microsoft’s setup flow can create a new Microsoft account, including an Outlook address where appropriate. Do not use your own email and Xbox profile as the child’s everyday sign-in.

A shared adult account may seem faster, especially for a very young child playing locally. It is a poor long-term arrangement because adult permissions, payment details, messages and activity are exposed. It also makes it difficult to tell who played, purchased something or communicated with another player.

A separate child account provides:
- Its own gamertag, saves, achievements and friends list
- Restrictions that apply to the child rather than every person using the console
- Purchase approval and age-based content controls
- Different settings and schedules for different children
- A profile that can be made more permissive as the child gets older
Add your child to the Xbox family
- Sign in to the Xbox with the adult organizer account.
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings.
- Select Manage family members.
- Choose Add to family > Add new.
- Sign in with the child’s existing Microsoft account, or select the option to create a new account.
- Complete the adult-consent or verification steps.
- Sign the child into the console using their own account.
You can then manage the child’s profile in the Xbox Family Settings app for iOS or Android, or through the Microsoft family dashboard. Microsoft Family Safety can also extend to connected Windows, Android and other supported devices, so decide whether you want Xbox-only rules or a broader family setup.
Important: The child should select their own profile tile before playing. Protect the adult account with a console passkey or equivalent sign-in protection, disable automatic sign-in to the adult profile on a shared console, and never leave the adult account available as a shortcut.
Configure the five controls that matter most
1. Set an age-appropriate content level
Choose the child’s allowed content level, then review individual games. Xbox uses ESRB ratings and interactive-content descriptors such as violence, language, user interaction, in-game purchases, random-item purchases, unrestricted internet access and location sharing. See the Xbox and ESRB ratings guide.
A rating is useful but incomplete. It does not fully describe a game’s public chat, user-generated content, moderation quality or monetization pressure. Treat games such as Roblox, Minecraft and Fortnite as separate safety cases and review their own account and parental settings. Recheck them after major updates.
2. Create a device schedule
In the child’s family profile, set the days and times when Xbox use is allowed. Microsoft also supports limits for individual games and apps. A device schedule answers “When may my child use Xbox?”; an app or game limit answers “How long may they play this title?”

Microsoft says app and game limits can extend across connected Xbox consoles and Windows devices through the family group. That is helpful if your child uses more than one device, but it can be surprising if you expect separate allowances on each device. Limits generally depend on the child being signed in, so check which account is active.
A practical starting point might be a defined after-school window on weekdays, a larger but bounded weekend allowance and separate limits for especially absorbing or social games. These are family choices, not Microsoft recommendations. Test a short limit before relying on it.

3. Turn on purchase approval
On the console, sign in as the organizer and open:
Profile & system > Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members > [child] > Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download > Ask a parent
Microsoft documents this setting in its guide to requiring children to ask before buying from the Microsoft Store on Xbox.

Approval is not a complete spending barrier. “Free” games can contain paid currency, season passes and subscriptions, while some games use external payment systems. Check that the adult payment method is protected, review subscription renewal dates and verify which account owns a game or subscription. Gift cards or a limited account balance can reduce exposure to a stored card, but they do not eliminate every in-game purchase route.

Xbox treats online safety as several decisions rather than one universal online switch. Depending on the child’s profile, you can control multiplayer, clubs, broadcasting, friend requests and communication.
A cautious starting configuration is:
- Multiplayer: off until you have reviewed the game and its social features.
- Voice and text chat: blocked or limited to approved/friends-only contacts for younger children.
- Friend requests: reviewed rather than automatically accepted.
- Broadcasting: off unless the child understands privacy risks and has appropriate supervision.
- Clubs and user-generated content: restricted for younger children.
Microsoft says only a parent using the family-group feature can change Xbox privacy and online settings for a child account. The platform settings may still not cover every feature inside a third-party game, which may have its own account, chat and parental controls.
Teach the child to mute, block and report abusive players. Headphones do not make public voice chat private. The child should never share a real name, school, address, location or password, and should tell an adult if someone tries to move a conversation off-platform.
5. Enable activity reporting
Activity reporting can summarize what the child played and provide insight into Xbox and connected Windows activity. Use it as a prompt for conversation, not as a complete record of everything the child saw or said. Reports may be delayed or incomplete across devices, accounts and games.

Tell children what is monitored and periodically confirm that they are using the intended profile. Family controls work best alongside supervision and clear household rules.
Practical starting points by age
| Child’s situation | Reasonable starting point |
|---|---|
| Younger child | Approved or offline multiplayer only; no public voice or text chat; no broadcasting; strict content and purchase limits. |
| Older child | Reviewed multiplayer games; friends-only communication; limited spending; activity reports enabled. |
| Teen | More permissive settings negotiated with the family, while retaining purchase approval and periodic review. |
These are editorial starting points, not Microsoft defaults. Adjust them for the child, the specific game and the people they play with.
Run a hand-off test
Before handing over the controller, test the setup from the child’s side:
- Sign in using the child’s profile and confirm the correct gamertag appears.
- Check that only intended games launch.
- Attempt a Microsoft Store purchase and verify that approval is requested.
- Test multiplayer, friend requests and chat with a suitable game.
- Confirm that the screen-time schedule and a short game limit work.
- Verify that the parent can see activity in the app or family dashboard.
- Sign out and confirm that the adult profile cannot be opened without its passkey or sign-in method.
Troubleshooting common problems
My child cannot join multiplayer
- Confirm the child is signed into the correct profile.
- Check that the account appears in the adult’s Microsoft family group.
- Make sure the organizer—not the child—is changing the privacy setting.
- Confirm that multiplayer is allowed at the Xbox account level and inside the game, if the game has a separate control.
- Check whether the game and any required subscription support the desired multiplayer mode.
- Complete any pending account-consent steps and confirm the console is online.
Allowing multiplayer does not automatically allow clubs, broadcasting, friends or every form of chat.
The child can see a game but cannot launch it
Review the child’s content limit, the game’s own age or privacy requirements, any required external account and the active Xbox profile. The game may be owned by another account, or an update may have changed its online or content requirements. Do not change the child’s birth date or use the adult account as a workaround.

Ask to buy does not appear
Confirm that the adult is the family organizer, the child is in the family group, Ask a parent is enabled for that child and the child is not using the adult profile. Also check whether the purchase is going through the Microsoft Store or an external in-game payment flow, and make sure the adult can access the relevant approval email or notification.
Screen-time limits are not taking effect
Check the signed-in account, the correct family member, the time zone, the day schedule and the title’s app or game entry. Confirm the child is not playing through another account. Allow the console and family app to synchronize, then test with a short limit. Because Microsoft says limits can apply across connected Xbox and Windows devices, check whether activity on another device is consuming the allowance.
Account consent or family settings are unavailable
Recheck that the adult account is the organizer and that the child’s date of birth and consent process were completed correctly. Microsoft periodically changes account and dashboard labels; search Settings for Family settings if the exact wording differs. Do not enter a false birthday to bypass age restrictions, since that can create consent, recovery and account-management problems.
Do you need Game Pass?
You do not need a separate parental-control subscription for the basic Xbox family controls. Xbox Family Settings and Microsoft Family Safety are the relevant integrated tools. A Game Pass subscription is a separate decision based on game access and online multiplayer needs; it does not override a child account’s age restrictions.
| Plan | When it may fit | Price signal |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Essential | A child who needs online console multiplayer and a modest catalog. | U.S. price seen August 18, 2026: $9.99 for one month or $24.99 quarterly; the catalog was listed at 50+ games. |
| Game Pass Premium | A household wanting a broader console/PC catalog and cloud features without choosing Ultimate. | U.S. price seen August 18, 2026: $14.99 per month; the listing showed 200+ games. |
| Game Pass Ultimate | A household that uses Xbox and PC and values the largest catalog and cloud access. | U.S. price seen August 18, 2026: $22.99 per month; the listing showed 500+ games. |
| PC Game Pass | Only if the child also plays on a Windows PC. | U.S. price seen August 18, 2026: $13.99 per month. |
Catalog counts, names, prices, promotions and availability can change by date, region and platform. The official listings for Essential, Premium and Ultimate, and PC Game Pass should be treated as the current authority. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled, and promotional prices can change to the regular rate. A larger catalog can also make content review and screen-time enforcement more important, not less.
Set family rules alongside the software
- Never share passwords or verification codes.
- Do not accept unknown friend requests.
- Mute, block and report abusive players.
- Never share a real name, school, address or location.
- Ask before spending money, including on in-game currency and subscriptions.
- Tell an adult if another player asks to move the conversation to another app.
For a very young child who cannot reliably handle passwords or account prompts, an adult may need to start the console and supervise play. A restricted child profile is still preferable where practical; direct supervision and physical access controls are additional safeguards, not replacements for account separation.
