Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“The program can’t start because asmskin80a.dll is missing from your computer.” The asmskin80a.dll error usually means an Autodesk-based application cannot load part of Autodesk ShapeManager, not that Windows itself has lost a system DLL.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Autodesk application that displays the message. Do not download asmskin80a.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into System32. The replacement may be malicious, built for the wrong application or architecture, or unable to fix a missing dependency beside the named file.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches your situation:
- The error appeared after an interrupted installation or update: repair the affected Autodesk product, or reinstall it with fresh installation media.
- The application was recently cleaned up manually: reinstall the Autodesk product. Shared ShapeManager files may have been removed with other application files.
- Windows Security removed or quarantined the file: check Protection history before reinstalling anything.
- The application starts after reinstalling but then fails with another runtime message: follow that separate message. Install Visual C++ Redistributable only if the Autodesk product specifically reports a Visual C++ runtime problem.
- The message says “specified module could not be found,” but the DLL exists: a dependency of
asmskin80a.dllmay be missing. Check the application logs and continue with the Windows repair steps below. - Several Autodesk products fail at once: avoid deleting files manually. Shared Autodesk components may be used by more than one product.
- The error started immediately after a driver, program, or system change: consider System Restore after the application repair steps.
- You are unsure which Autodesk product owns the file: note the application shown in the error or the shortcut you used to launch it. The DLL name alone does not identify the exact Autodesk product or version.
What asmskin80a.dll is
asmskin80a.dll is identified as ASM Skin, a component of Autodesk ShapeManager, developed by Autodesk, Inc. ShapeManager is Autodesk geometric-modeling technology used in Autodesk design products, including Inventor and AutoCAD-based software.

It is an application DLL, not a normal Windows component. Windows does not ordinarily install it as part of Windows 10 or Windows 11, and it should not normally be placed in either of these folders:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Some public file indexes report a version and approximate file size, but those details are third-party metadata rather than a universal specification for every Autodesk release. Public listings also disagree about architecture. Do not choose a replacement based on a file listing or filename alone.
The exact application cannot be determined from asmskin80a.dll alone. Several Autodesk products can use ShapeManager-related components, and the correct copy must match the Autodesk product build that is failing.

Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk application
Repair is the best first step when the Autodesk product is still installed and the older Autodesk installer provides a Repair option. It restores missing or damaged application files as a group instead of replacing one DLL in isolation.
For products with the classic installer
- Close the Autodesk application.
- Press the Windows key and type Control Panel.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Uninstall a program under Programs.
- Select the Autodesk product that displays the error.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- In the Autodesk maintenance window, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts and allow the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the Autodesk application again.
A successful repair should allow the program to start without the asmskin80a.dll message. It may also restore other ShapeManager files that were missing alongside the named DLL.
If Repair is unavailable, or if the repair operation fails, do not copy a DLL from another computer. Continue with a complete reinstall.
For newer Autodesk installations
Newer Autodesk products using the Autodesk Install service do not provide the same old Control Panel repair option. In that case:
- Open the Autodesk application list in Windows Settings or Control Panel.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Sign in to your Autodesk account from Autodesk’s official software delivery process.
- Download fresh installation media for the exact product and edition.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application before restoring custom files or add-ins.
If the installer offers Repair, Verify, or Reinstall, use that product-provided option before attempting manual file replacement.
Fix 2: Reinstall with fresh Autodesk installation media
A normal reinstall is appropriate when the installation cache is incomplete, an update failed, or the application files were manually deleted.

Before uninstalling, back up any Autodesk-specific material you need, including custom profiles, templates, project files, licensing information, and settings. Do not delete Autodesk folders manually while another Autodesk product remains installed. Shared components can be needed by more than one application.
Then follow these steps:
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the product on Windows 10.
- Click Uninstall.
- Follow the Autodesk removal prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from your Autodesk account or use trusted installation media supplied by your organization.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Install the same product edition and compatible update level used by your projects.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the Autodesk application.
Fresh media matters when the original installer cache is damaged. Reusing the same incomplete cache can reproduce the same missing-file error.
If an ordinary uninstall and reinstall still fails, perform a clean Autodesk removal only by following Autodesk’s current product-specific procedure. Back up your settings first, because a clean removal can remove configuration data and shared components.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL. Check this before repeatedly reinstalling the Autodesk product.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an entry referring to
asmskin80a.dllor the Autodesk installation folder. - Expand the entry and review its path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- The file is inside the verified Autodesk product installation directory.
- The Autodesk installation came from an official source or trusted organizational deployment.
- The security product does not identify the file as malicious after a current scan.
- You have confirmed that the file belongs to the product you are repairing.
Microsoft warns that allowing an unsafe file can expose the device. If the item was found in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unfamiliar location, do not restore it. Remove the untrusted copy and reinstall the Autodesk product from official media instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAfter restoring a verified quarantined file, restart Windows and test the application. If the file is quarantined again, stop launching the application and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
Fix 4: Confirm the application architecture and installation path
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit DLL. However, the architecture of asmskin80a.dll should not be guessed from third-party file pages. Conflicting public listings are not a safe basis for selecting a replacement.
The correct approach is to reinstall the Autodesk product build that matches the application:
Rank #3
- Design excellence for engineers
- LCD workflow assistant
- Powerful application control
- Advanced MCAD navigation
- Superior comfort
- Identify the Autodesk product and its installed release.
- Check whether your organization deployed a 32-bit or 64-bit application.
- Use the matching Autodesk installer.
- Let the installer place the DLL in the product’s own directory.
- Do not mix files from another Autodesk release or another computer.
Do not use System32 and SysWOW64 as general-purpose storage for application DLLs. Their names can be confusing on 64-bit Windows because Windows uses file-system redirection for some 32-bit processes. That behavior does not make either folder the right destination for an Autodesk-owned file.
If you can see asmskin80a.dll in the Autodesk product folder but the application still reports it as missing, the named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is absent. A reinstall is still the safest first response.
Fix 5: Repair missing dependencies
Windows error messages are not always literal. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows could not load a dependency required by the named DLL, even when asmskin80a.dll is present.
Check the following:
- Open the Autodesk product’s installation folder.
- Confirm whether
asmskin80a.dllexists there. - Do not move or rename it.
- Check the Autodesk installation or setup logs for a second missing module.
- Review Event Viewer for an application error at the time of the failed launch.
To open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an Error entry at the time you launched the Autodesk product.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and exception details.
A dependency diagnostic tool can help an experienced administrator identify which module fails to load, but it should be used for diagnosis, not to download individual DLLs from an untrusted source. If the dependency belongs to Autodesk, reinstall the Autodesk product. If the message specifically names a Microsoft runtime, follow Microsoft’s instructions for that runtime.
Visual C++ Redistributable
The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable provides Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. It does not replace Autodesk’s asmskin80a.dll.
Install or repair the Visual C++ package only when:
- The Autodesk installer explicitly requests it, or
- The application reports a Visual C++ runtime error separately.
Microsoft provides separate x86 and x64 packages. The package architecture must match the application that needs it. Installing a random runtime package because a DLL is missing is not a substitute for repairing the Autodesk installation.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally restore an Autodesk-owned DLL, so use them as secondary steps when the application reinstall does not resolve the error or Event Viewer indicates a Windows component problem.
Run DISM first, then SFC.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application.
The SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or could not repair some files. If DISM or SFC reports an error, record the exact message and repair Windows before repeating the Autodesk test.

Repeatedly running SFC without identifying what changed usually does not restore an application file. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work by scanning for system problems and showing what it found; its repair action is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix when asmskin80a.dll itself belongs to that product.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers
A graphics or hardware driver is not the normal owner of asmskin80a.dll, but a driver change can expose a separate Autodesk startup problem. Use this step when the failure began after a driver update, when Event Viewer identifies a graphics-related module, or when Autodesk reports display initialization errors in addition to the DLL message.
First check Windows Update:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates.
- Restart Windows.
To inspect a device driver:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters or the device category named in the error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when you have a trusted compatible package.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, use Roll Back Driver when available.
- Restart Windows and test the Autodesk application.
Do not remove a driver simply because asmskin80a.dll is missing. A driver reinstall will not replace an Autodesk application DLL.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking the hardware model, Windows architecture, and vendor package repeatedly. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the full version performs the driver installation. This is optional, and reinstalling the affected Autodesk product remains the correct fix for an Autodesk-owned DLL.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after installing software, a driver, or a system change and a suitable restore point exists. It is not a replacement for reinstalling Autodesk when the application files are damaged.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
After Windows returns, launch the Autodesk application. If the error remains, repair or reinstall Autodesk rather than repeatedly rolling the system back.
Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly associated with COM or ActiveX components.
There is no verified evidence that asmskin80a.dll is a COM or ActiveX server requiring registration. Do not run:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →regsvr32 asmskin80a.dll
Do not use /u or /i variations copied from generic DLL troubleshooting pages. They can produce messages such as an entry-point failure and do not restore a missing Autodesk file or its dependencies.
Ordinary application runtime DLLs are normally loaded by the application from its installation directories. Repair or reinstall the owning application instead.
Why downloading the DLL separately is unsafe
A standalone download can fail in several ways:
- It may contain malware or an altered binary.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may belong to a different Autodesk release.
- It may lack other ShapeManager files required by the application.
- It may be placed in a directory that changes DLL search behavior.
- It may hide the original installation or dependency problem.
Never copy a downloaded DLL into System32, SysWOW64, the Windows directory, or an unrelated application folder. The safe source is the official Autodesk installer or your organization’s trusted Autodesk deployment package.

Prevention after the repair
Once the application works again:
- Keep the Autodesk product updated through its normal official update process.
- Avoid manually deleting files from Autodesk installation directories.
- Do not use disk-cleanup utilities that remove application caches without checking their purpose.
- Keep Windows Security active and review quarantine events before restoring files.
- Keep installation media or account access available for the exact Autodesk product you use.
- Back up custom templates, profiles, project files, and settings before a clean reinstall.
- Record the Autodesk product version and installation path before troubleshooting future errors.
FAQ
Is asmskin80a.dll a Windows system file?
No evidence supports that conclusion. It is associated with Autodesk ShapeManager and should be treated as an Autodesk application component.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which Autodesk product installed it?
The filename alone does not identify the exact product. Several Autodesk products may use ShapeManager-related components. Identify the application that shows the error, then repair or reinstall that application.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
Normally, no. Application-owned DLLs should remain in the application’s installation directory. Reinstall the correct Autodesk product build instead.
Is the file missing if it appears in the Autodesk folder?
Not necessarily. Windows may be reporting a dependency failure. If the file exists but the error remains, inspect Event Viewer and reinstall the Autodesk product before attempting advanced dependency diagnosis.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only if the Autodesk application or installer separately reports a Visual C++ runtime problem. It does not replace asmskin80a.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan regsvr32 fix the error?
Usually not. There is no verified evidence that this DLL requires COM registration. regsvr32 is not a general-purpose repair command for application DLLs.
Should I run SFC first?
Not usually. SFC and DISM repair Windows components, while asmskin80a.dll belongs to Autodesk ShapeManager. Repair or reinstall Autodesk first, then use DISM and SFC if Windows corruption or a missing dependency is suspected.
What should I provide when asking for further help?
Record the exact error text, affected Autodesk product and version, Windows version and architecture, installation path, whether the file exists in the product folder, any Protection History entry, and relevant Event Viewer details. This information distinguishes a missing Autodesk file from a missing dependency or incompatible installation.
