compiler.dll is a MathWorks module supplied with MATLAB Compiler, not a normal Windows file. If Windows reports that compiler.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the MATLAB installation or the compiled MATLAB application that is actually failing rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The correct fix depends on what you launched:

  • If MATLAB, mcc.exe, or another MATLAB development tool fails, repair or reinstall that MATLAB release.
  • If a compiled application from another company fails, install the matching MATLAB Runtime or use the application publisher’s installer.
  • Do not copy compiler.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

1. Identify the failing program first

Time needed: 5 minutes

The filename alone does not identify the program that needs repair. Look at the complete error and the path shown by Windows.

Common message variants include:

  • “The program can’t start because compiler.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “This application failed to start because compiler.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading compiler.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The file compiler.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: compiler.dll. Please install the application again.”

These messages are not all equivalent. A file can be absent, damaged, the wrong architecture, or present while one of its dependent DLLs is missing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  1. Note the application name in the error window.
  2. Select Show more details, if that option appears.
  3. Copy the complete error text.
  4. Record the full path if Windows displays one.
  5. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  6. Select Details and look for the executable that failed.

If the path points into a MATLAB installation, repair MATLAB. If it points into an application’s own folder, repair that application or install its required runtime. A compiler.dll located in a random folder is not automatically a genuine MathWorks file.

2. Repair MATLAB by reinstalling the exact release

Time needed: 30–60 minutes, plus download time

MathWorks does not provide a direct MATLAB repair function. For a damaged or incomplete MATLAB installation, the supported repair is to uninstall and reinstall the affected release.

Use this path when the failing program is MATLAB itself, mcc.exe, or another MATLAB development component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstall the affected MATLAB release

  1. Save your MATLAB projects and close all MATLAB processes.
  2. Open Start > Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  5. Search for MATLAB.
  6. Identify the release associated with the error.
  7. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  8. Choose Uninstall.
  9. Follow the MathWorks uninstaller.
  10. Restart Windows when the uninstall completes.

Do not delete random files from the MATLAB directory as a substitute for uninstalling. A partial deletion can leave broken shortcuts, missing dependencies, and an installation record that interferes with the reinstall.

Install MATLAB again

  1. Open the official MathWorks Downloads page in your browser.
  2. Sign in with the MathWorks account or license used for the installation.
  3. Select the same MATLAB release that was previously installed.
  4. Download the Windows installer.
  5. Run the installer.
  6. Choose the required license or activation method.
  7. Select the products previously used.
  8. Include MATLAB Compiler if the failing program uses mcc.exe or MATLAB Compiler functions.
  9. Complete the installation.
  10. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.

Launch MATLAB from the new installation rather than an old desktop shortcut. If the application starts and the original command or project opens normally, the repair worked.

If compiler.dll is still reported as missing, check the path in the error. You may be launching an old shortcut, an old batch file, or a second MATLAB release. Right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and inspect the Target field.

3. Install the matching MATLAB Runtime

Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus download time

Use MATLAB Runtime when a deployed application compiled with MATLAB fails. MATLAB Runtime is not a general replacement for the MATLAB development installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The runtime must match the MATLAB release and update level used to compile the application. Installing the newest runtime does not necessarily repair an application built with an older release.

Find the required runtime release

  1. Open the application’s installation folder.
  2. Read readme.txt, README, or the supplied installation instructions.
  3. Check the application publisher’s support documentation.
  4. Ask the publisher which MATLAB release and update level was used to compile the program.
  5. Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.

If the application came from another company, its installer may already include the required runtime. In that case, reinstall the application using its official installer instead of installing MATLAB itself.

Install MATLAB Runtime on Windows

  1. Open the official MathWorks MATLAB Runtime download page.
  2. Select the release required by the application.
  3. Download the Windows runtime package.
  4. For current releases, the package is supplied as a 64-bit archive with a name similar to MATLAB_Runtime_R20XXy_win64.zip.
  5. Right-click the downloaded ZIP file and select Extract All.
  6. Open the extracted folder.
  7. Run setup.exe.
  8. Accept the license terms.
  9. Complete the installation.
  10. Restart the compiled application.

For older applications, the required runtime may not be available through the current online download page. MathWorks provides older-release guidance, and applications built with older MATLAB releases may need mcrinstaller or the runtime supplied by the application creator.

If MATLAB itself is available, its matching runtime installer can also be downloaded with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
compiler.runtime.download

After installation, start the compiled application again. If it launches, the missing component was part of the runtime environment rather than the MATLAB development installation.

4. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Time needed: 10 minutes

A 32-bit compiler.dll cannot replace a 64-bit build, and a file from another MATLAB release may not be compatible even if the filename is identical.

Use the architecture of the calling program, not simply the architecture of Windows.

Check Windows architecture

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Look at System type.

Windows may be 64-bit while an older application is 32-bit. Conversely, a 64-bit application requires 64-bit libraries even when other software on the computer is 32-bit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the application architecture

Look at the application’s documentation or installation folder. If the publisher does not state the architecture, contact its support team. Do not copy compiler.dll from another computer or another MATLAB release to guess at the correct answer.

Older MATLAB installations used paths such as:

...MATLAB7BINWIN32compiler.dll

and:

...MATLABR2012bbinwin64compiler.dll

Those paths demonstrate that both 32-bit and 64-bit MATLAB variants existed. They do not provide a universal location or version for every MATLAB release.

5. Investigate a dependency error

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

“Specified module could not be found” can mean that compiler.dll itself is missing, but it can also mean that Windows found compiler.dll and could not load one of its dependencies.

First, reinstall MATLAB or the owning application. This restores the vendor’s complete file set and is safer than trying to identify individual dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error names a Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or MSVCR*.dll:

  1. Note the exact missing runtime filename.
  2. Open Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.
  3. Download the architecture required by the failing application.
  4. Install the package.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the application again.

Do not assume that the current x64 package fixes every application. Older MATLAB software may require an x86 package or a legacy runtime, and multiple Visual C++ Redistributable versions can coexist.

Do not remove all existing Visual C++ Redistributables. Other programs may depend on them.

If the message reports 0xc000007b, suspect corruption, a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch, or a dependency problem. Reinstall the owning MATLAB product first. Do not treat that code as proof that compiler.dll itself is the only damaged file.

6. Check antivirus quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Security software can quarantine a legitimate file after an update or an incomplete installation. Check quarantine before attempting repeated reinstalls.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Look for an item whose path belongs to the legitimate MATLAB installation.
  8. Confirm that the file was installed by MathWorks, not downloaded separately.
  9. If the origin is trustworthy, select the item and choose Restore or Allow on device, where available.
  10. Start MATLAB or the application again.

Do not restore a DLL simply because its filename matches the error. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection. If the file is quarantined again, run a full security scan and reinstall MATLAB or the owning application from its official installer.

7. Repair Windows components when other programs also fail

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

DISM and SFC normally do not recreate a third-party MATLAB DLL. They are useful when several unrelated applications have begun failing or Windows component corruption is suspected.

Run DISM first, followed by SFC.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Terminal or Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the MATLAB program again.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application after restarting. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the process only after reviewing the command output, then repair MATLAB separately. Windows repair commands cannot substitute for reinstalling a missing MATLAB Compiler module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running SFC and DISM repeatedly without knowing what changed can waste time and obscure the actual cause. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention before its full version performs repairs, but reinstalling the MATLAB product remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to MATLAB.

8. Install Windows updates

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

An interrupted update or missing Windows component can affect application startup, although Windows Update does not normally supply compiler.dll.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again.
  7. Test the application.

If the error began immediately after a system change, note the update or software installation that preceded it. Do not remove updates at random. The failing executable, full path, and exact error code are more useful than the DLL filename alone.

9. Update a driver only when the error identifies one

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

Display drivers and DirectX are not relevant merely because the filename contains the word “compiler.” Update a driver only when the error, Event Viewer, or application publisher specifically identifies a driver or hardware component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check manually:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category named in the error.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
  8. Test the application.

For a graphics application, use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver page when the publisher specifically recommends a graphics-driver update. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs updating before its full version installs them, but a driver change is not a substitute for reinstalling the MATLAB application that owns compiler.dll.

10. Use System Restore after a recent change

Time needed: 20–45 minutes

System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver, update, or software installation and a suitable restore point exists.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.
  8. Test MATLAB or the compiled application.

System Restore does not replace a properly matched MATLAB Runtime and should not be used to install a DLL from an unknown source.

Do not download or register compiler.dll

Avoid DLL download sites and standalone replacement files. They can provide malware, an incorrect MATLAB release, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not include the dependencies your application needs. A replacement copied into a system directory can also create version conflicts and security problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy compiler.dll into:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Do not copy it into a different application’s folder unless the application publisher explicitly instructs you to do so.

Do not run:

regsvr32 compiler.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. MATLAB Compiler’s compiler.dll is not documented as a COM component that should be registered this way. Registration will not repair a missing dependency, wrong architecture, or damaged MATLAB installation.

Windows Features, DirectX repair, registry cleaners, and display-driver reinstalls are not general fixes for this file. Use them only when the error specifically identifies the related component.

Likely causes and the correct fix

Likely cause Appropriate fix
Incomplete or corrupted MATLAB installation Uninstall and reinstall the same MATLAB release, including MATLAB Compiler where required
Wrong MATLAB release or architecture Install the release and architecture required by the calling executable
Compiled application lacks its runtime Install the matching MATLAB Runtime release and update level
Dependent Microsoft DLL is missing Reinstall the owning application, then install the required official Visual C++ package
Antivirus quarantine Verify the file’s origin and restore it through Windows Security if safe
Interrupted update or failed reinstall Complete Windows Update, restart, and reinstall the affected product
Windows component corruption Run DISM, then SFC as administrator
Malware, disk failure, or unrelated software Check the full path, scan the system, and verify the file’s origin

Public file listings may show different version, size, or architecture information for compiler.dll. Do not use those listings as a universal identification guide. The installation path, calling executable, MATLAB release, and architecture are more reliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to send support if the error remains

If reinstalling does not solve the problem, collect this information before contacting MathWorks or the application publisher:

  • Full error text
  • Exact error code
  • Name of the failing executable
  • Full path shown in the error
  • MATLAB release, if known
  • Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Windows version and system architecture
  • Whether antivirus quarantined the file
  • Whether compiler.dll exists in the named installation directory
  • Whether the problem started after an update, restore, or failed installation

If compiler.dll exists but Windows still says “specified module could not be found,” report that exact wording. It points toward a missing dependency rather than necessarily a missing top-level file.

FAQ

Is compiler.dll a Windows system file?

No. compiler.dll is associated with MathWorks MATLAB Compiler. It should not be copied into a Windows system directory.

Do I need MATLAB or MATLAB Runtime?

You need MATLAB when MATLAB or a MATLAB development tool is failing. You need MATLAB Runtime when a deployed application compiled with MATLAB is failing. The runtime must match the application’s compiling release and update level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a compiler.dll from another computer?

No. The other computer may have a different MATLAB release, architecture, update level, or dependency set. Reinstall the owning product instead.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?

A dependent DLL may be missing, the file may be damaged, or the application may be loading the wrong architecture. Reinstall the owning product first, then investigate any dependency named in the error.

Should I run regsvr32?

No. compiler.dll is not documented as a DLL that should be registered with regsvr32.

Will SFC restore compiler.dll?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not MATLAB Compiler files. Use it only for broader Windows corruption, then reinstall MATLAB or the owning application.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a DLL download site safe for this repair?

No. Use the official MathWorks installer, the application publisher’s installer, the matching MATLAB Runtime, or an official Microsoft runtime package when the error specifically identifies one.
